NTFS Permissions - effective
by Guest JohnB- 8 replies

Isn't the "effective" permissions the most restrictive combination, calculated from group or individual permissions that apply? I just checked the effective permissions (setup by someone else) of a folder that contains confidential information, and everything is checked off except Change, Full Control and Take Ownership. I did this with random users that should only have Read permissions. There are 2 groups assigned permissions on this folder; one group - Users - is granted everything but Full Control, the other is group - Authenticated Users - is granted Read & Execute, List and Read. And I would have thought those combined permissions would have…

OS almost freezes while copying files to USB harddrive
by Guest David Bala¾ic- 16 replies

Hi! I noticed this strange phenomena while copying files to an external USB harddrive. When I copy (using the explorer) a directory containing about 20 5-10 MB big files and 20 about 2GB big files from my internal sata drive to the external usb drives, then this pattern emerges: - the external HD is busy all the time (its LED blinks) - the internal HD LED is : - off for 40 seconds - then half on for 10 seconds (blinks fast, giving the impression of half light intensity, compard to full on) - fully on for 25 seconds This then cycles, until the copy is finished. During the 25 seconds when the internal HD is constantly lit, the system is almost…

The time on our servers (and domain) is about 5 to 8 minutes fast. I am trying use an external source to set time in a domain environment. I have been having problems following the directions in the following article: How to configure an authoritative time server in Windows Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;816042 I have two w2k3 standard edition SP2 servers. One server is the PDC, but when you type net time, it is pointing to the GP server. On the GP server it points to itself. I have made all suggested changes in the above article, and tried different time servers. I even tried using the command line: net time: / set…

Hi, We have installed our client application on Windows server 2003 R2 SP2 product. The client application service stop due to unknown reasons. We receive errors for the event id 7031 (the application name service has terminated unexpectedly. This has done this x times. The following action will be taken), 1000 and 1004 (Faulting application x.exe, faulting version ....., faulting module) in the event log. I am unable to understand its actual cause and resolution? Is it only because of the client appliction (it is compatible with the product) or with the product? Please help me know. Thanks, Naaz.

Upgrade from Windows Server 2003 Standard to Enterprise Edition
by Guest Davidg12- 2 replies
We have Windows Server 2003 Standard edition installed on a box that supports several SQL Server 2005 Enterprise database applications. We are running out of memory and found that the standard edition has a 4 GB limit on RAM. AS such, we need to upgrade to Windows Server 2003 Enterprise 32 bit in order to allow additional RAM to be installed. My question is: Can we install Windows Server 2003 Enterprise directly over the Standard edition? If so, are there any limitations or potential problems with SQL Server 2005? Or, do we need to install Windows Server 2003 Enterprise directly from scratch and then install SQL Server? Thank you. David

2008 server: repair boot environment - how?
by Guest Alwin- 6 replies

Hi all, I admit, I messed up a quite important server. Originally it was Windows 2008, for some testing / cloned its system partition (Norton Ghost) and installed Windows 2003. Some time later I restored Windws 2008 over 2003, and since then the server does not boot any more. Strange: if I insert any OS CD (tried some: 2003 Server, 2000 Server, even XP ...) and boot, the server boots the CD, displays the normal "Press any key to boot from the CD" prompt, and if I do *not* press any key it will after some time skip the CD boot and - boot Windows 2008 server from the Harddisk. I'd prefer it to boot without the helping CD, of course :-) Questions: * wha…

Question about setup /PrepareSchema - Preparing the Active Directo
by Guest dean.carrefour- 9 replies

I'm trying to install the Exchange Server 2007 SP1. The docs say to prep the active directory prior to installation. I'm following this article for the ad prep: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125224.aspx When I get to step #2 and run setup /ps from a command prompt, I get a small dialog from 'Windows Setup' that pops up and says "Please go to the Control Panel to install and configure system components." with only an OK button on it. Is that normal? If not, what am i doing wrong. I am just starting this process (SP1 install) and this is the very first step I've performed.

Need help resolving Event ID 1054 Errors appearing in event log constantly

Hello all: I have a newly installed domain controller for a client of mine that I'm having a problem with, and am hoping I can get some good advice on tracking down the problem. This is for a small office, with about 8 computers total. This server is the first domain controller, as previously the network was set up with all stand-alone computers. It's a custom built box running Windows 2003 Small Business Server SP2. Hardware specs are AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ with 2GB RAM. The problem I'm trying to solve is Event ID 1054 appearing in the Application Log every 5 minutes like clockwork, for the last few months now. Event Type: Error Event Source…

Remove Server from Domain and Rejoin, Implications?
by Guest Karl Burrows- 10 replies

I have been advised by Citrix in order to repair an installation of their Presentation Server to remove this server from the domain and rejoin it to clear an error I am having with this installation. This is not the DC, but it is our primary file and print server. What are the implications of removing this server? Will I lose shares, user permissions, mapped network drives, etc? If not, is there a preferred way of doing this with the least loss of network settings? Thanks!

Hi I have installed WDS in our Windows 2003 server (SP2) and this server is a member of our exiting Domain. WDS is installed on a Native mode. We configured the server and things are quite fine, how ever I'm facing the problem in the following situation. 1. I ran sysprep in the Win XP box 2. On restarting the PC, I pressed F12 and pointed the PC to WDS server 3. I selected the option Capture, to capture the image from the PC to WDS server 4. In the option, I selected "upload the image to WDS Server" 5. Now the capture process is successfully completed in the local PC, now as a next step this WIM image must be uploaded to WDS server. 6. In this …

Hello. I've a Windows 2000 srv domain controller with active directory, I do my backups with windows ntbackup on 10 DLTs 40 Gb. I have just replaced all old 10 DLTs with other new 10 DLTs, and last week I saw a difference of the DLTs showed by Removable Storage snap- in and ntbackup: Removable Storage showed 20 DLTs and ntbackup 30 DLT catalogs. With no DLT cassette mounted in the DLT drive, I've removed (eliminated) all the 30 DLT catalogs showed in ntbackups (right click, eliminate) , and all the 20 DLT showed in Removable Storage were eliminated too automatically. After this, I've inserted the 10 DLTs (one after the other) and have catalogued each c…

Find in W2K8 Enterprise changing to wingdings?
by Guest David B- 4 replies

I've been trying out Windows Server Enterprise 2008 and have to keep reinstalling. The desktop slowly sees the fonts change, over a period of a few weeks, from normal to wingdings, making it all unreadable. This has happened multiple times. Avast Server Antivirus does not find anything, nor do I see anything off in Hijack This. I'll attach a screenshot in my reply email, so that it is only by choice that you see the screen shot. This is the 64 bit version, by the way. On the same machine, 32 bit is happy as a clam. This one boggles my mind. David

Hi all, I am not sure why I would want to use offline files? Scenario is as follows: On my local workstation I have my document folder that I write and change files. On my server I have folder redirection enabled. If I change files on my local workstation they change on the server as well. If my server goes down I still have a local copy on my workstation. If I make any changes while the server is down....so what, they will get copied when the server comes back online.....right??? Am I missing something?? We have a single domain with several locations connected together via a WAN. One user in one location is having problems accessing any network shares on one server. Anytime she tries to access a file or printer on this server it prompts for a username/password. Once she enters her credentials she can connect to the resources with no problems. If she logs off and back on she must re-enter her credentials to access the server. She is logging onto the domain. She can access other servers in the domain with no problems and without being prompted for her credentials again. Other users can log on to her PC and access the same server normally, although the acc…
