Server 2003 R2 to SBS 2003 (not R2) Site to Site VPN
by Guest Lee- 6 replies

Greetings, I have a client that wants me to setup a Site-to-site VPN (and DFS, but I'll ask that in another group). They won't buy additional hardware yet, so I'm stuck doing this with Windows VPNs (Sonic Walls and other devices are not options right now). They have two sites - SiteA has an SBS 2003 STANDARD (NON-R2) server and SiteB has a Server 2003 R2 System. I have successfully created a Demand-Dial VPN from SiteB to SiteA and have been able to, via this VPN connection, promote the SiteB server to a DC and DNS server. Both sites will have the server acting as a router with Dual NICs (I know this is not generally advisable but their budget unti…

by Guest Adam Sandler- 1 reply

Hello, I’ve noticed that I cannot create a Universal Security Groups in active directory. Local and Global groups are still a possibility but the radio button for Universal is greyed-out. Does anyone know if it is a policy setting, a registry change, or something else which is preventing me from creating a universal security group? If so, how do I get the capability to create Universal security groups back? Suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

by Guest Bwise_IT- 2 replies

I compressed some SQL log files on my C:\ partition on a Windows 2003 server, and now, i think by coincidence, we are getting some peculiar error messages in the Even Viewer. Will removing the Check mark from the "Compress contents to save disk space" on a single file Decompress the file? Can i select a group of files and do this step for all of them? Does this actually Decompress the file? Thanks Bob

I have a file server that houses all users information, files, etc. I just upgraded the hard drives and thought I had backed up quota settings, but in fact only backed up 1 users settings. Anyway, all users files have already been restored and now I need to go back in and setup the quota again. The problem I am having is that when I setup the quota for Mark, it will show him as using 0Mb when in fact, his files (which he is the owner of) actually take up 50Mb. Now I read that disk quota only applies to files being added after the quota has been setup. Is there any workaround to get the quota to recognize the files that were already there before I …

Folder Redirection Issue
by Guest nevets2001uk- 1 reply

We have set up a GPO that enables Folder Redirection of My Documents. This part works very well. The annoyance is that the My Documents folder is appearing as available Offline even though we have not set this up and the share that is used for redirected folders is setup so that offline caching is not allowed. I really can't work out why this is happening? -- Cheers, Steve Gordon MCSE, MCSA: Messaging

Hi I'm having problems with the following scenario: A manager of a department has access to a shared folder that the rest of his department regularly file documents. This folder is located on at a share on a Windows 2003 R2 file server. This manager has made this folder, and sub-folders, available off-line. If a user other than this manager creates another folder within this folder it is not marked as available off-line and no files in this folder are synched. If the manager navigates to this new folder whilst on-line and creates a file within it, the file, the folder and all other files within it are now marked as available off-line. This i…

Best Practices for Certificate Authority
by Guest SmpIT- 0 replies

Hello. We are a small business (70-100 users) with two domain controllers both running Server 2003. Going forward, we would like to use the new Network Access Protection (NAP) to help with client security. We know that installing a Certificate Authority on the domain is a necessary first step in this process. Can anyone tell me if there is any reason NOT to install the CA on one of our two domain controllers? I know Microsoft best practices indicate that a CA should not be installed on a DC "for security reasons," but I'm guessing that on balance, small shops like us might not be as concerned about those potential security problems. Also, …

Server 2003 performance issue
by Guest Gerald- 0 replies

Our 2K3 server becomes very sluggish at time and i need to try find out what the cause may be. I would like to be able to monitor traffic, etc. Any suggestions where to start. Config is: P4 3.0GHz, 2Gig ram, 2x80Gig mirrored system drives, 2x250Gig striped data drives. Obviuosly servers do get busy, but there appears to be sluggish response even when we are at quiet times in the business. Maybe our server has become "too small" The network icon is always on and there is always data being sent / recived. This could also just be normal .... but it may not be. Any help would be appreciated. Regards
