I support a number of servers and some of the counters are not invoking. For example, %user utilisation,%, processor utilisation, %pagefile us, Average Memory. The PerfMon.wmi does not have these options to add in the System Monitor Properties. However on some of the servers they are in the Performance Monitor (not wmi) and in MMC Does anyone know how to add them into the Data [tab] Performance Object field??? Any help would be great. -- Two Wrongs Can Make A Right

I have prepared .NET 2.0 Desktop App for my college library. My college System Admin set-up the library network with Windows 2003 server & XP clients, and has handed over its responsibilities to me. I have some experience with Active Directory & Group Policies, but I'm not an Admin. I have set-up OUs & appropriate Group Policies for various clients. I am looking for help in 2 specific areas: 1) First, each client has a varying number of hard-disk partitions. Active Directory Group Policy allows me to restrict access to either A,B,C,D or all drives. Some of these clients have up-to 6-7 partitions & I need to restrict access to some of them…

Hello, we have some computers in a Windows Server 2003 domain and have the following problem(s): * logged on to a domain computer with a user that is domain admin and opened computer management -> Local Users and Groups -> Groups * If I try to add a user to a group I only get the local computer as location and can't add any domain users to the local group * If I open a group that already contains some domain users it takes very long to display. The domain users show up not as normally only with their usernames but also with there unique ID (S-1-5-21-821....). Any suggestions? The domain controller is reachable and I get almost the sam…

Can't access shared files as Domain Admin
by Guest Neil- 2 replies

I have a Windows 2003 Server (non-domain controller) that is acting funny. It doesn't seem to be able to access any of the files on remote shares in the same domain even though I am logged in as the Domain Admin. I can browse the directories and copy the files in them to other places with no problem but I can't actually run anything. However, when I go to copy something it asks me "Do you want to move or copy files from this zone?", making me think I set up DNS incorrectly. When I check DNS on this server the Forward and Reverse lookup zones look identical to those on the primary DNS server and there aren't any errors in the Event Viewer, so I'm no…

Is there any application provided by Windows Server 2003 that would let us do accounting for how many hours a user spends *actively* logged into a specific server? We expect users to come into the server by RDP, and we do NOT want to capture the time they spend logged in but disconnected. We are only concerned with doing time accounting for how many hours per two week period they spend in an active login. If there are third party applications to do this kind of time accounting, I would appreciate the reference. -- Will

by Guest gambool- 3 replies

Although I've seen many threads describing how to move the D&S, I couldnt find anything on the following. I want to mount a new drive as C:\Documents And Settings. So effectively not change the setings for D&S, just store it on a mount. Can this be done easily? (How would it be done while the folder is in use?). Many thanks. Red.

Renaming domain controllers?
by Guest pez- 3 replies
I understand that the domain functional level needs to be 2003. What if you have a root domain (root.com) and 2 child domains (test1.root.com and test2.root.com). All domains are 2000 native. If you wanted to rename DC's in root.com, can you just raise domain functional level for root.com? Or do you need to raise all the domain functional levels?

Hi, I developed a Web Application with Visual Web Developer and SQL Server Express Edition on my local PC. Now I rented a Virtual Windows Server 2003 (from 1&1) and want transfer the files from my PC to the server. It's the first time I am doing this. Actually I do not know how to get the database transfered and what to consider with the connection string. Do I have to install SQL Server Express Edition on the Windows Server 2003 ? Or do I just have to copy the mdf-file from my local PC to a certain folder on the server ? What do I have to consider with the connection string that I used in my applications (webconfig-file) ? Many thanks in advanc…

Hi guys, For a short period we had an ftp service with anonymous write permissions enabled. during that time the notorious flashfxp and sft@loader messed around, one of which created a folder named " " (char 0x20). They access it using CWD /+/ and upload pirated software apparently. I'd like to delete the folder without reformatting the volume. Any suggestions? A scripted solution or a tool out there?

Hello, can anybody help? It would be appreciate it. This is what I have: A Domain XXXXX.com with a cluster DC1 and DC2. It happens that DC2 is acting up for whatever reason and it has to be replaced. I Installed W2k3 Enterprise Server R2 in a new computer. After the installation I assigned it its first role as a DC with Active Directory. Would anyone be kind enough to tell me how to install DNS and DHCP on this server, so it is in hapy terms with DC1 (don't forget DC2 will be replaced by this guy). I did try to assign it a DNS role, but when it started asking about zones, forwarding, etc I stopped. Would anyone be kind enought with this old ma…

I have just installed Windows 2003 as a domain server at home and have used Active Directory. I want the kids to be Administrators on their computer, so they can install MSN etc, but I want to make sure they are not Domain Administrators so they cannot change the server setting. Is this possible? Am brand new to servers and their setup and it looks a lot to learn! - so any guidance will be most helpful. Thanks in advance Kevin

I have a Vista laptop user that does not want to join the domain and he wants access to a shared folder on the 2003 DC without having to join the domain. I setup a mapped drive on his desktop and checked the box to automatically login each time he reboots with admin creds. Now each time he reboots it requires him to enter in the admin user name and pw and he wants it to do it automatically. I know with my old 2000 DC and XP I could setup a user on the DC with the same name and pw as the xp user who is in a workgroup and it would pass through but will this work the same with 2003 and vista? I just dont want to show up and setup a new user only to find o…

On my Windows Server 2003, I would like to choose which desktop shortcuts are available to users. I would like 99% of the users to have all the shortcuts that are in the All Users Desktop folder, but I would like to remove these shortcuts from just a few of the users' desktops. Can I do this based on their Group membership? Is there another way? Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Hello, I have about twenty local users on a server 2003 machne that is running SharePoint Services. the machine is being replaced and the users need to be moved. I can recreate the users on the new machine but then I would have to get them to change their password and so on. i would like to know if there is a way this can be done without the user having to do anything other than login - permissions, passwords and so on being the same? The machine is a domain member server but the users are not domain accounts.
