Mixed Domain controllers with Server 2003 SP1 + SP2
by Guest IT Team @ Queensbridge.bham.sch.uk- 2 replies

Hi I had a question regarding a domain controller configuration on my network. I had 3 domain controllers on my network they all are on Server 2003 SP1. One of the domain controllers recently failed and I removed the necessary roles of that server before taking it out of production. Now the server is fixed, I have installed server 2003 and am questioning if I can have this fully patched up with SP2. If I made this server a domain controller like it was before but now with SP2 would that affect replication because the other servers in the domain are still on SP1? If anyone could advise me on this, it would be most appreciated.

DHCP Lease for <blank> System Name
by Guest Lori- 1 reply

Running Windows 2003 Small Business SP2 In DHCP leases I have a 'Client IP Address' that is leased to a <blank> system 'Name'. All other systems that should be obtaining an ip via DHCP are listed in the 'Name' column by systemname.domain.com. I've never seen a <blank> entry before & want to figure out where it's coming from! -- I've deleted it, but it always comes back - when I delete it, there are no complaints of something / somewhere not working -- No record of a matching ip in DNS - I've purged the cache -- No record of a matching ip in WINS -- nbtstat -A xx.xx.xx.xx comes back with 'Host not found.' -- I've deleted it, rebooted …

Dual NIC education
by Guest pvong- 4 replies

I'm a newbie so please explain. I got a couple of servers running running w2003 with dual NICs. I'm trying to figure out how to use the dual NICs. 1) Do you guys assign different IPs to each NIC? If so, do you make two different A records for the same server except with two different IPs? 2) Even though each NIC has it's own MAC address, can I assign them with the same IP number? Basically, I'm trying to see if can use both NICs at the same time. I don't understand if some request information to an IP and I have 2 NICs with the same IP, will the request happen twice? This would create overhead. Please educate me like I'm a newbie who just started …

Question about LSA and Event ID 515
by Guest FAC_Server_Guy- 0 replies

I've got a bunch of W2K3 servers, and I've noticed the following. In the security logs for these servers, there are instances of Event ID 515, that have as the userid, the userid of the individual who built the server, rather than something like, "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM". The following is an example: Event Type: Success Audit Event Source: Security Event Category: System Event Event ID: 515 Date: 6/3/2008 Time: 11:16:53 AM User: MYDOMAIN\MYUSERID Computer: SERVER01 Description: A trusted logon process has registered with the Local Security Authority. This logon process will be trusted to submit logon requests. Logon Process Name: KSecDD For …

Adding server to domain
by Guest Jasper Recto- 2 replies

I had this problem way back in Windows NT and I wanted to see if this would be an issue today. Back then we had 2 locations across the US. The networks were connected using a dedicated VPN between the 2 locations. The problem we had was when we built a server at the remote location, we could not add it to the domain. We had to ship the computer back to the main office just to add it to the domain. Once it was added, it was shipped back and we had no problems with users at the remote location logging in. My question is, with active directory, can we build a server at the remote location and attach it to the domain when the locations are separated t…

Server 2003 & VPN
by Guest Mark- 1 reply

I have a Server 2003 Standard which I want to enable VPN access to. When I run the Routing and Remote access wizard it says that I must use the "Custom" configuration because I only have a single network adapter. I run the Custom configuration and everything seems fine. The problem is that once I establish the VPN connection from my PC to the VPN server, I loose any and all internet access from my local PC. Any ideas on how to change this? Thanks.

Filter Log Alerts in Event Viewer
by Guest Skadoodle- 0 replies

We are currently receiving multiple errors regarding "TermServDevices," Events 1106 and 1111 that are filling up the event log. These errors pertain to PDF Printers (QuickBooks PDF Printer) that are not installed on the Terminal Server for the clients connecting to it. We do not need to see these errors and I was wondering if there was any way to filter them out? We are running Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Terminal Server. Thank You, -- Skadoodle

KMS issue - Server 2008 kms key on Windows Server 2003?
by Guest Paul Coen- 1 reply

We've got a Microsoft Campus agreement, and I'm getting our KMS set up on a Windows 2003 R2 Server. Getting it running using our Vista KMS key was no problem, but I couldn't get any of the server keys listed on our license to work - all reported back as invalid when I tried to do slmgr /ipk <key>. The Vista KMS key entered with no issues and activated. Before I go down the route of calling the authorization center, I wanted to make sure that this actually ought to work - using the 1.1 KMS for Server 2008 activations on a Windows Server 2003 R2 (+ sp2) system that itself is using a current, valid VLK.

R2 File Resource Manager question..
by Guest jim- 0 replies

Can anyone point me to some kind of technet article or white paper that explains how the Win2k3 file resource manager determines duplicate files? I've got a pain in the a** user who insists on knowing the criteria Windows uses when it identifies two or more files as being duplicates. Thanks!

Hey everybody. In the past couple weeks, maybe a month, we've had a sudden outbreak of sharing violations, can't open/delete/save files, those types of issues on 2 Win2K file servers. The one server, I've replaced the RAM and NIC, also ran a full blown chkdsk on the volume that had issues, and still having issues. Now that the other server is having issues i'm thinking that maybe a recent MS or VirusScan update (the only 2 things similar on both servers) may have caused this. Anyone else having issues like this recently, or know what else I should be looking at to find out what's going on?
