R2 SP2 Quotas
by Guest Scott- 0 replies

I plan to implement file storage quotas on Server 2003 R2 SP2. This is a busy file server with a 'Users' top level folder with nearly 400 user home directories as subfolders. These user home directories are already populated with data and have multiple subfolders under each user home directory. Unfortunately, we are not able to apply a single quota and apply it at the top level 'Users' folder and choose the option of an Auto apply template and create quotas on existing and new subfolders. I have created 2 templates--one for 1 GB and the other for 2 GB. Is it accurate to say that I have to create a separate quota for each of the nearly 400 user home direct…

by Guest Miha- 2 replies

Hi Is it possible in Win2003 domain environment to get infromations when users log-on and log-off into their computers? My boss wants that when a user log-on and log-off into his computers, he automatically gets an e-mail with the following data: - user that has logged on/off - the time of log-on/off Can this be arranged via GPO or do we need custom VBS script? If so, does anyone have it allready? Thank you all in advance. Regards, Miha

by Guest leon- 19 replies

Hi, I have Windows server 2003 with about 40 clients attached. I did have Webmarshal 3.5 and a firebox connected but this was causing loads of problems so I have unintalled Webmarshal and taken the firebox from the system. I have given the router DHCP ability and taken it from the server. I am now able to access the internet from the server without any problems but all of the clients just get 'this page can not be displayed' message. I am able to ping the site from the clients computer though. We have a static IP address The router is 192.168.0.254 The server is 192.168.0.203 the ipconfig /all on the server is. Microsoft Windows [Version 5.2.37…

Scheduled jobs and terminal server
by Guest roger.orr@gmail.com- 2 replies
When using scheduled tasks under Windows Server 2003 a job will run in the context of a terminal services session for the specified user, if available, and run in session 0 if not. However, this means that if the terminal services user logs out while the job is running then the job is aborted. Is there any way to supress this behaviour and prevent scheduled jobs running in terminal services sessions (this was the behaviour on Windows 2000) ? Regards, Roger.

Setting page file > 4gb on Win2k3
by Guest TJ- 3 replies

Hi I want to increase the page file to 8gb on my Win2K3 SP2 box, but I realise there is a 4gb under certain configurations. I checked the following KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;237740 and it states: "to create a larger page file, you must load the Physical Address Extension (PAE) kernel. In Windows Server 2003, PAE is automatically enabled when the server is using Hot Add Memory devices. Alternatively, you can force the PAE kernel by adding the /PAE switch in the Boot.ini file" I checked my boot.ini file and its contents is: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating…

Windows 2008 run scheduled task as domain account ?
by Guest Peter Lawton- 4 replies

I'm trying to create a scheduled task in Windows 2008 server to run as a domain services account but I can't seem to set a task to run as any account other than me, even though I get a browse button to chose the account to run as. In fact when I try to change accounts back to myself I still get an error "The specified account name is not valid" I've been able to do this under W2003, what's the trick to getting it to work in W2008? Thanks Peter Lawton

Windows Server 2008 Core remote connectivity.
by Guest Dan Sheehan- 2 replies

Greetings. I have created a new Windows Server 2008 Core Enterprise Edition server, that I am going to use with Hyper-V to run a couple of test servers (hopefully I will be able to make them production once Hyper-V is RTM'ed). I have been able to change its IP, join it to the domain. I have enabled remote management through the firewall. Using another Windows Server 2008, I am able to use a domain account to connect to the Core server with Computer Manager and the Firewall MMC as well. The only thing I seem to be unable to do in Computer Manager is use the Disk Management part of Computer Manager. Every time I try, I get the pop-up error "The RPC server is unav…

DHCP box and Windows 2003 Server Domain Controller documentation
by Guest Tarh ik- 5 replies
Hi Everybody! I'd really appreciate if someone could tell me about some documentation I could read in the Microsoft Web Site that will help me understand how the following four items can talk in the same language: * A Router/DHCP Box (call it a D-Link, a Cisco, a 3Com, a Linksys, etc) * Windows 2003 Server as a Domain Controller (with Active Directory) * Windows Vista * Windows XP The reason I'm asking is because we are doing some weird stuff to keep our network working, and although it works, these solutions might generate some issues in the future. Here is what we did: * We installed the DNS services in our Domain Controller (…

Server won't power up after outage
by Guest M Skabialka- 1 reply

When we have an extended power failure the server goes onto the UPS backup power but after a specified time is shut down by software that came with the UPS. However it doesn't power up when power is restored. Our retired servers always came back up as soon as power was restored using the same software. Could this be a BIOS setting? It's a Dell Poweredge.

EFS
by Guest MW Stape- 2 replies

I am trying the setup EFS sharing. I believe this must be the least document part of Windows 2003. I have shared 2 files in one folder. I fetched and installed the basic efs certificate. Now I read one but not the other. I shared another set of files for security, gave them a certificate, shared the files to them. They were able to open the files once. After that they just received error messages. Have any good article? Can you help me? Thanks -- Michael Stape

autodisconnect
by Guest mmark751969- 0 replies

Just wondering if there is any side effect to disabling the autodisconnect feature on my windows 2k3 server domain controller. This is the feature that drops idle connections after a specified time- out period (by default, 15 minutes) to prevent wasting server resources on unused sessions. Has anyone done this with any negative effect. Thanks

I have a very "old" server in our domain. This was the first DC in our Windows 2003 AD implementation. I've setup a new server which is now an additional DC. I'd like to change server rolls between these two servers. Is there a tool I can use? Can anyone direct me to a msft article? Thanks All!

Printers going offline
by Guest M Skabialka- 4 replies

Printers that have worked for a couple of years or more are now suddenly and for no reason going offline. With one printer, if I killed everything in the queue, then powered it off and on, it would come back to online status. The other will not. The info panel on the printer says it is ready, but client machines and the server all show it offline. Print jobs fill the queue but won't print. What else can I try? Mich

How to restore default .EXE file association?
by Guest FUBARinSFO- 8 replies

Hi: I've lost my file association for .exe files and now don't know how to restore it. Running regedit.exe doesn't work, nor does opening up a command prompt windows nor Run from Task manager. Rebooting in Safe Mode doesn't work, neither does rebooting from last known good configuration. All the .exe files open with the new association (list.com, in this case). Any ideas would be appreciated. <name withheld pending mental examination> Windows 2003 SP2

Hello, I have a Server 2003 domain and need to upgrade the hardware of 2 of my domain controllers. I thought this would be a good time to move to Server 2003 R2. I wanted to do a sanity check on the process and make sure there are no gotcha's that I've not yet read about. I've built the hardware and installed Server 2003 R2 and understand that the next step is to run the forest prep. I've got good tape backups of the domain controllers and individual system state backups of each as well. Would there be any other best practices that I should do from a disaster standpoint in case the forest prep goes south and I need to restore? Or is this upgrade …

printer issue
by Guest qq- 1 reply

Hi All, I installed a printer in Windows 2003 server by using setup local printer with standard TCP/IP Port. I shared the printer as a network printer. I setup a lot of users to use the printer. Now, I want to change the printer's name from Win2003 server, but I know that user could not delete the printer after I change the printer name from server. I know what I can do is that I can ask each user to delete the printer, after all users finish delete it, then I change the printer on server. The problem is that users use the printer all the time, and I could not ask all users to delete the printer at same time, they work on different shift. It is very …

Problem with WinHttpAutoProxySvc service?

HI all, Thank you for your help in advance. What does the service WinHttpAutoProxySvc on Windows 2003 do? Recently, my colleague reports that our CAD system (the Police things was "freeze -the clients stop responding and need to wait for about 15mins". According to his info, each time the CAD cliients freeze happening were at the moment when the service WinHttpAutoProxySvc starts and stops for 15 mins. I checked on the service and it was set to manual tough. But why does it still run? What triggers it? Does this make sense? My another irrelevant question is... will all the domain users interrupted when a DC (the only single DC) reboots? Any …
