Network load balancing question
by Guest Zyoni- 0 replies

I'm setting up network load balancing among two Windows 2003 servers. Network load balancing automatically assigns a MAC address to the virtual IP. Is it possible to change that MAC address? If so, how? Thanks.

Cscript from task scheduler
by Guest Juan García- 6 replies

I have a vbscript file (backup.vbs) that does some calculations and then call the ntbackup program with parameters. If I execute in the Start / Execute box the command "cscript backup.vbs" (or if I doubleclic the .vbs in the windows explorer) I can see the interface of the ntbackup program, the progress of the backup and when it ends the windows close. I would like to execute the script from the task scheduler. I add a new task and I write in the execute box "cscript backup.vbs" and I can see two important differences: 1.- The backup is completed and the bkf file created, but it happens in background. How can I see the ntbackup interface? I need the progre…

Setting up a dedicated server to monitor system performance

I'm planning to run Perfmon (sometimes also called System Monitor, depending on the version of Windows) on a server connected to a network to monitor system performance, but I don't know which Windows OS to use. Does anyone know the differences between the versions of Perfmon packaged with Windows 2000, 2003, and 2008? Thanks!

Event Logs
by Guest luvnolan- 3 replies

I need to search the security event log from a month ago but the log has been long over-written on the server. Assuming I have a full backup (including what backup exec calls "system state" is there a way to restore the log files without restoring the entire server (it is a domain controller).

Configuring Local Security Policy to control access to MSSQL DesktopEd
by Guest daz_oldham- 4 replies

Hi everyone I'm not too sure if this post is more relevant for the SQL group or not - as it is really a windows security question... but here goes :) I'm trying to lock my SQL Server Desktop Edition down which is running on a relatively fresh install of Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition which is a dedicated server from Fasthosts. I'd like to create a local security policy that denies access to all remote addresses other than my fixed IP address at home and work. However, all attempts to create a policy just result in nothing actually changing - can anybody suggest an article with step-by-step idiot proof instructions. Somebody is trying to log on …

Raid 5 speed issues
by Guest Jordan- 1 reply

I have purchased an addon eSATA II card wtih two ports and a box that has two eSATA 5 port multipliers for a total of 10 disks. I am using Windows 2000 Disk Manager to setup two RAID 5 sets with 5 disks each and each have a total of almost 2TB available. I am doing some speed testing with various utilities and it seems that small liniar and random reads have very poor performance (25 - 50% slower). It is only when the utilities test larger files above 500 KB where I start seeing higher performance than just putting a single disk on the controller rather than the 5 disk stripe. Is this normal for RAID 5 to have poor small data performance and only s…

Re: Winlogon Memory Leak
by Guest bfloeagle- 0 replies

Re: Winlogon Memory Leak Sorry for resurrecting such an old post but this is very close to what I am experiencing as well (my problem is with CPU usage, instead of memory). My production servers are remote and accessed via RDP. We frequently seeing the winlogon.exe process taking up huge amount of CPU usage (up to a core of a multi-core box) and the only solution to free the core back up for normal use is to reboot the server. The winlogon process is always tied to a disconnected RDP session that fails to reset. As an added bonus, the console RDP port AND the physical port fail to respond (we sit at a grey screen after we logon, almost like the explorer do…

Domain controller for the domain XXX could not be contacted
by Guest Scott- 4 replies

I have a single PDC Win 2003 server with 2 WIN XP PCs connected. I have AD setup correctly and have been running fine for years. I just reformatted PC1 this week. I joined myDomain fine and installed by basic apps such as Office 2003, Acrobat 8 and PhotoShop. However, after having successfully mapping a couple of drive letter to shares on the PDC, after using the PC1 for about 30 minutes configuring my user profile, I noticed I couldn't access the mapped drives. So, I unjoined myDomain and joined WORKGROUP. After rebooting, I tried to re-join myDomain and received the error "domain controller for the domain 'myDomain' could not be contacted". My PC2 and…

Using Linux...I can get the OS to install and boot via SCSI PCI card that I have, but Windows Server 2003 is a different story. I can install the Windows 2003 on to the SCSI drive fine, but when it's time to restart to boot the OS, no OS is available. (cannot find drive) Anyone got some tips? Thanks GB

Disk Management - help
by Guest Julie Smith- 1 reply

Hi, I'm thinking of setting up a storage file server using win2008, however, I have a few questions (I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to servers). My server would have 8 or more SATA hard disks (using controllers). I know that win2008 has the ability to extend volumes over multiple disks, which is what I would like to do (8 disks into 1 volume). So, lets say I had 8 disks, 7 of which were 1TB each, and 1 is 500GB, if i wanted replace the 500GB (which would obviously have data on it), are there utilities or applications that can move the contents of this disk onto the other 7 disks, so that i can replace this disk? I hope that makes sense. Thank…

OK first of all let me apologize because I know this isn't the correct NG or even the correct forum to ask this question. However knowing that there are still some old IT dinosauers still out there I'm hoping I canfind my answer here. I have this old HP LaserJet 5si MX printer that I had setup about 8 years ago on this network. Worked fine but after a few months we purchased a new laserjet printer and the 5si sort of went unused and untouched. Anyways our new printer (not new anymore) needed to be serviced so we wanted to use the 5si temporarily. Well it didn't work. I remember a few years ago we stopped using it because it would always get a paper jam. So now al…
