Downgrade and then Upgrade?
by Guest Hank Arnold (MVP)- 2 replies

I have been having a disagreement with some admins who say that they were told by a consultant that if they buy a Windows Server 2008 license (you can't get 2003 licenses anymore), that they can downgrade it to install Windows Server 2003. This I buy. However, the consultant has said that they can later "upgrade" to Server 2008 with the same license. I have said that I can't see MS Letting me,in effect, buy two licenses for the price of one. I say that, while it is possible to do it with Open Licenses, it can't possibly be what MS intends and violates the license agreement. Anyone know what the facts are? Any links to "official" MS documents? -- …

2008 server: repair boot environment - how?
by Guest Alwin- 6 replies

Hi all, I admit, I messed up a quite important server. Originally it was Windows 2008, for some testing / cloned its system partition (Norton Ghost) and installed Windows 2003. Some time later I restored Windws 2008 over 2003, and since then the server does not boot any more. Strange: if I insert any OS CD (tried some: 2003 Server, 2000 Server, even XP ...) and boot, the server boots the CD, displays the normal "Press any key to boot from the CD" prompt, and if I do *not* press any key it will after some time skip the CD boot and - boot Windows 2008 server from the Harddisk. I'd prefer it to boot without the helping CD, of course :-) Questions: * wha…

Unix fileshareing - which exact version of Server 2003?
by Guest justmark- 1 reply

I'd like to retire one of my old Redhat servers (used only as a fileserver) by keeping my old Unix files on a new Windows 2003 server. I see that R2 is supposed to allow this, but I seem to be missing something in the translation here. Is this available with the 32-bit standard version and if not, which version(s) will do this? Thanks!

Permissions required to restart services
by Guest susan- 2 replies
I have a situation in which I want a couple users to be able to do these things (on a WIndows 2003 server): Log on remotely and restart 2 specific services The remote logon works, but I can't figure out how to grant them permissions to restart selected services. (If I make them members of the local Power Users group, they can restart the services, but I don't really want them to have all the other "rights" that go along with being a Power User.) Thanks

Chkdsk error in DPM
by Guest r.danjou@easternbank.com- 1 reply

I keep getting this on a particular volume and sync jobs keep failing. The Operation failed since DPM was unable to access the file/folder \\? \Volume{5XXXXXX-0dbd-11dd-9f7a-806e6f6e6963}\Program Files\Avaya\IP Office\Monitor\XXX 20080521 020004 (14).txt\ on dpmserver.somecorp.XXX.com. This could be due to the file/folder being corrupt or the file system on the volume being corrupt. (ID 2036 Details: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable (0x80070570)) Recommended action: 1) Run chkdsk on the affected volume and then run synchronization with consistency check. 2) If running chkdsk does not solve the problem, and the server indicated above is a prot…

We have a Win 2003 SBS server that has too small of a boot partition (C drive) so I think we need to re-install the OS and expand the partition to use the entire drive. When I re-install the OS can I use the same domain name and will workstations need to re-join the domain? Also, is there any other way around this or other options for me? Thanks. David

NTFS and MS Access DBs
by Guest TKE402- 2 replies

Hi, I have several MS Access DB's that are in a folder that is Read/Execute for Authenticated users. No one can open the DBs. If I change the permissions to Read/Write/Execute than it works because the DB lock file needs to be written to the folder that the DB is located. Is there anyway around this? I do not want the users to have read, write, execute to that folder. All they need is read and execute. Thanks, TKE402

The time on our servers (and domain) is about 5 to 8 minutes fast. I am trying use an external source to set time in a domain environment. I have been having problems following the directions in the following article: How to configure an authoritative time server in Windows Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;816042 I have two w2k3 standard edition SP2 servers. One server is the PDC, but when you type net time, it is pointing to the GP server. On the GP server it points to itself. I have made all suggested changes in the above article, and tried different time servers. I even tried using the command line: net time: / set…

Can't Block/Hide Particular Drive with GPO
by Guest Kardon Coupé- 4 replies

Dear All, I've setup up a custom ADM to block all drives on a system, except the Z drive which is mapped to a folder for the person to be able to save out... All the Drives get blocked, except the E drive (well the Z drive is visible, but that was intended) I'm using the value of '01111111111111111111111111' or 33554431 decimal, which is correct, right? Why would the E Drive be visible in 'My Computer' ? Regards Paul.

Cygwin problems on Vista Ultimate, problems not had on Win2k3SP2
by Guest qa4ever- 2 replies

Hi Vista gurus We're using CYGWIN_NT-6.0 1.5.25(0.156/4/2) We were successfully using it on Win2k3SP2 but on Vista ultimate it is not working as previously. When we start our application in the cygwin command prompt window, it is not doing anything but just times out after awhile, terminating the process started. The cygwin is setup to use the inetd account with certain user rights that we used on Win2k3SP2 successfully. We wonder if on Vista we need to setup cygwin any differently in regards to user rights and accounts, enironment variables, network access etc etc.? Many thanks for any solutions, ideas, tests, workarounds etc., QA4Ever

add a disk to an existing RAID 5 array on windows 2003 server
by Guest JimRBG- 3 replies

I'm working on a server that needs to expand the hard drive capacity. The system is a Dell 2950 server. It currently has 4 x 300gb drives configured as RAID 5 array. There are 2 spare drive bays open to add drives to. If I just add additional drives, say 2 more 300gb drives, do I just go into computer management, disk management and partition the additional capacity as a new drive? How should I approach this. I do not want to reformat the existing drive and re-install the OS. Thanks, Jim

Win2K3 Server Gateway settings
by Guest BBW- 1 reply
This is more of an IP settings question vs an ISA question. I have my 2K3 servers point to my ISA 2K Internet gateway and it works great. I just added another Internet ISA 2K6 gatway to the network. So on one of my servers, I added this gateway's IP in addition to the original gateway. Now the server has 2 gateway settings. I can RDP to it from the Internet through the ISA 2K gateway, but can't do it from the new ISA 2K6 gateway. If I put the 2nd gateway first in the server gateway settings, I can access it from the Internet through the ISA2K6 gateway My big question is there a way to have the server receive connections from both Internet gateways …

Task Scheduler 0x80 on Windows 2000
by Guest Paul- 0 replies

Hi, We have problems with scheduled tasks failing on windows 2000. A reboot solves this but we cannot get to the bottom of the problem. It's Sp4 and there's no Human Interface Devices service. I've tried making jobs with the AT command, assigning runas service and bath permissions and pretty much worked through a lot of search results. It seems to be about every 7 days it fails. Can anyone shed light on this? There is nothing in event logs (app and system). Task log attached, job names aren't actually xxxxxxxxxx lol. "xxxxxxxxxx.job" (runxxxxx.bat) Started 06/10/2008 23:45:00 "xxxxxxxxx.job" (runxxxxx.bat) Finished 06/10/2008 23:49:14 Result: T…

Do You Really Think You Can Neglect Your Windows Registry?
by Guest jeremiah wright- 1 reply

Windows registry, a database of files stored to decide how the operating system and the other program are going to work. The proper management of registry files gives out optimized performance of programs. Windows registry is important file system you cannot ignore to let it unmanaged. The poorly performing system, every time it has to go through the start up check option of those files which are never to be used. You need a cleaner registry to stop this nuisance being repeated over and over. Often you uninstall a program and you are some times prompted like "These are certain no longer in use; however some programs may need it. Would you like to delete. If you…
