How to restore default .EXE file association?
by Guest FUBARinSFO- 8 replies
Hi: I've lost my file association for .exe files and now don't know how to restore it. Running regedit.exe doesn't work, nor does opening up a command prompt windows nor Run from Task manager. Rebooting in Safe Mode doesn't work, neither does rebooting from last known good configuration. All the .exe files open with the new association (list.com, in this case). Any ideas would be appreciated. <name withheld pending mental examination> Windows 2003 SP2

Remote backup server for disaster recovery
by Guest GerryA- 8 replies
I need some advice regarding a project to create a remote server that users can access in the event of a disaster that causes access to the main server to be unavailable. The scenario is that in the event of a pending disaster some employees will relocate and access the main server/office remotely. If this remote access becomes affected by the disaster then the users will switch to the alternate server in a remote location. I am looking for advice as to how best to configure the remote server, do i add it to the existing Domain and then restore the data to it? My current train of though is that the servers will not be linked after the original configurat…

Copying only newer files with Robocopy
by Guest Tom Reis- 8 replies

We have a Novell server that we are migrating to aWindows 2003 server. We have already ran Robocopy about 1 month to copy all the data for testing. We have all the rights setup for the new Windows 2003 server and want to preserve them. What we are hoping to do is to run Robocopy to copy over only the files that have changed on the Novell server to the Windows 2003 server. What would be the command for doing this?

Ntbackup cassette catalog

Hello. I've a Windows 2000 srv domain controller with active directory, I do my backups with windows ntbackup on 10 DLTs 40 Gb. I have just replaced all old 10 DLTs with other new 10 DLTs, and last week I saw a difference of the DLTs showed by Removable Storage snap- in and ntbackup: Removable Storage showed 20 DLTs and ntbackup 30 DLT catalogs. With no DLT cassette mounted in the DLT drive, I've removed (eliminated) all the 30 DLT catalogs showed in ntbackups (right click, eliminate) , and all the 20 DLT showed in Removable Storage were eliminated too automatically. After this, I've inserted the 10 DLTs (one after the other) and have catalogued each c…

DCDiag - failed with Error Win32 Error 8420
by Guest Alex- 8 replies

Hi. We were in the process of upgrading our 2003 network to 2003 DCs (we only had one 2000 DC) and have an error we can't seem to resolve when running dcdiag. We added a second DC (2003) without problem, unfortunately there was a terminal hardware failure on the new server a few days later and the O/S was unbootable. Rather than restore we cleared out all the entries for the failed DC and re-added it. At this point everything was working successfully apart from one error listed below during DCDiag test. We continued with our replacement of the last 2000 DC and replaced it with a new server running 2003. Again the demotion and addition of the new DC w…

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. -- Bruce

Hi, I am decommisioning a server on our network that is a print server for 6 printers, I want to be able to move the printers from this server to another existing print server. Help! I tried installing Windows Server 2003 and each time I get the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 logo and the little status bar moving from left to right and that's when I get a stop error, or the system hangs. I tried the installation about 20 times so far with same result. I ran full diagnostics from the utility partition and no errors were reported on any hardware. During the server installations I tried the following so far: 1) Swapped out memory, hard drives, SCSI back plane. 2) Updated PERC & BIOS firmware. 3) Tried installing with the PERC and also tried installing using the onboard SCSI conroller. 4) Installed using server as…

Hi folks, I need a bit of help from all of the experts on here. I need to get a VPN setup for a teleworker that is going to be working from home. Managed to get so far but now a bit stuck. Here's the setup: Windows 2003 server running RRAS in our office, Draytek 2800 router. RRAS is setup and configured for PPTP access using port forwarding 1723 on the router to the server. This works fine and it is pretty stable. I am trying to upgrade the VPN to L2TP/Ipsec in order to improve security. The teleworker is trying to access my network using a 3g modem from Switzerland and it looks like it is blocked. The provider says they support IPSEC (Does this soun…

Hi, I am having a problem connecting from Domain Controller "A" to Domain Controller "B" using the Computer Management console (compmgmt.msc). While logged on as domain admin, I open compmgmt.msc and can view the local event logs but cannot view the event logs on Domain Controller B. The odd thing is that DC "A" and DC "B" can both use cpmpmgmt.msc to connect to DC "C" and view the logs on that domain controller. but "A" and "B" cannot connect to each other. Any advice on how to correct this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -- bb

SBS & Terminal Server Question
by Guest Greg Horne- 8 replies
First of all, I program but have to dabble in setting up our server. I need a server to host web sites, and also allow users to remote desktop to the machine and run desktop applications. I am expecting up to 3 concurrent remote desktop users at any given time, max. Currently, I have 2003 SBS with the 5 included CAL's. It appears I am limited to 2 users being able to remote desktop to the server. I think the purpose of this is for remote administration. SBS does not appear to have Terminal Server, software and/or license, I am not sure. Can I get a Terminal Services license for SBS? If so, then is just a matter of me buying Terminal Server lice…

I am tired of *everything* being in italics in Windows Server 2003 SP2. As I access it through Remote Desktop, I cannot even use ClearType, so using apps strains my eyes more than necessary. Is there any way to get rid of it and use a normal font instead? Cheers ss.

Stop error hotfix download
by Guest Anton- 8 replies

Hi, I have a problem of randomly getting Stop errors on my Win2003 machine. The event log shows the reason code to be "0x805000f" I found that this might be caused by the bug of NTFS driver (KB article #937455) and that hotfix is available. My question is: how could I get this hotfix that will hopefully solve my problem ? Thanks in advance.

can ping server with fqdn but not with netbios name
by Guest Ehren- 8 replies

Hi- I have a very strange issue going on. I installed a new server today and added it to the domain as a member server for hosting user home directories. (Will replace our old slow and crappy server). I can access it just fine using \\servername\share from almost any computer I can come in contact with. However from both of our domain controllers the only way I can ping it or access its shares is by using the fqdn (\\servername.domain.edu.local\share) which is annoying. Both domain controllers serve as AD integrated DNS servers each with itself as its primary and the other as the secondary. ALl IP's are static. all the servers are plugged int…

Can't run scheduled task
by Guest alicorn2- 8 replies

I'm having "fun" today :) Windows Server 2003 R2, Standard Edition, Service Pack 1 I have a scheduled task that I want to run a batch file hourly, as a service, with no one logged in. I've simplified and simplified, so now I'm down to bare bones using a different batch file that does next to nothing to try to troubleshoot it. The "test" batch file has this in it: @echo off echo %date% %time% Start of task, running as %UserName% >> c:\temp\test.log REM this is where I was calling my real batch file, but I've even taken that out now echo %date% %time% End of task >> c:\temp\test.log echo ------------------------- >> c:\temp\test.l…

Server Upgrade

I'm replacing a Dell poweredge sc420 that I have used for a server for the past year and a half. I don't have a lot of experience with servers, the SC420 was my first attempt at running SBS2003. I want to make sure that I'm purchasing something that will give me much better performance as well as reliability. My old machine has 2 80gb sata drives on a raid 1. Here is a description of the new machine. It's a poweredge 2900 with a Quad Core Xeon Processor E53352x4MB Cache, 2.0GHz, 1333MHz FSB, I chose 4GB 667MHz (4X1GB), Dual Ranked Fully Buffered DIMMs vs 8x512. I don't know if I was better off with the single ranked 512 or the dual ranked 1gb. I ch…
