add a disk to an existing RAID 5 array on windows 2003 server
by Guest JimRBG- 3 replies

I'm working on a server that needs to expand the hard drive capacity. The system is a Dell 2950 server. It currently has 4 x 300gb drives configured as RAID 5 array. There are 2 spare drive bays open to add drives to. If I just add additional drives, say 2 more 300gb drives, do I just go into computer management, disk management and partition the additional capacity as a new drive? How should I approach this. I do not want to reformat the existing drive and re-install the OS. Thanks, Jim

New to networking and although I’ve installed printers to workstations, I’ve never installed a new printer to a server. I only know that an IP address is to be reserved throught DHCP for the new printer if the printer software does not scan the network and find an unused address. If there is a simple how to with pictures I would appreciate it. Working with Server 2003

Add Administrators Group to Roaming Profiles Security
by Guest laramie.hartmann@gmail.com- 1 reply

I recently setup a group of terminal servers using roaming profiles and inadvertantly forgot to set the GPO to add the Administrators group to the user roaming profiles. I've corrected this so that new profiles have the proper security permissions, but I'm not sure how to correct the permissions on the profiles that were already created. I realize that I can go through one by one and take ownership then adjust the permissions then apply ownership back to the original user, but this will take ages with over 100 users. Does anyone know of a faster (scripted) way of doing this? Thanks, Laramie

Add dotted name in dns forward zone
by Guest Jake- 2 replies
Hi, In a w2003 domain (mydomain.lan) we have a linux intranett server we want users to access by entering intranet.lan. I opened DNS / Forward Lookup Zones / Mydomain.lan, selected New Host (A) and entered intranet.lan and its IP address in the record. I noticed that a new folder named lan was created under Mydomain.lan and it contained the host entry intranet with corresponding IP address. However it does not resolve. If we enter a non-dotted name it resolves nicely. What do we need to do to have a dotted name like this resolve via a win dns server? thanks for suggestions Jake

Add network printer from server running x64 Version
by Guest ykffc- 1 reply

My first Windows 2003 Standard version server has setup a printer called PP1. It can print normally from the local machine and it can be shared. If I add the above printer to an Windows XP machine from the network, the installation works smoothly and it can print normally. My second server runs Windows 2003 x64 version. I setup a local printer (same model and make) with name PP2. Again it can be shared. The printer prints normally from application running on the local machine. If I try to add PP2 to the same Windows XP machine, I receive an error. It complains "the server for the PP printer does not have the correct printer driver installed. If you …

So here's the scenario: -Existing computer and full time employee. -Full time employee computer connected to server using connectcomputer. -User has installed and configured programs (AutoCad being the one that’s most important). -Full time employee is switching to part-time and will come in after normal business hours to work. -Hired new employee that will use this same computer during the day. -Would like to add the new employee as a user to this computer without having to redo all the settings, AutoCad in particular but don’t want to delete the other user. I’ve created the new user but when I logon using the user name/password it brings up the co…

Add Printer to All Users?
by Guest Kathy Meegan- 3 replies

Hello, We don't use roaming profiles. We are testing out using a Windows print server, however, we found out that the Windows printers are dependent on the user profile of the logged in person. So the help desk can't install printers logged in as themselves because when the user logs in the printers aren't there. Is there any way to get around this so that printer installs would be workstation associated and not associated with a particular user? We are also concerned about when a user logs into a workstation other then there own they won't have any printers. Could printers be associated somehow to "All Users" or the workstation so that whoever l…

Add RTM Hyper-V to 2008 "Without Hyper-V"
by Guest William Fields- 1 reply

I may have messed up... I just did a brand new 2008 install "without hyper-v" because the one included in 2008 was beta code. I was assuming I'd be able to download and install Hyper-V either from MSDN subscribers area, or from the public downloads area. Is it possible to download/install RTM Hyper-V to a an install of "Server 2008 Without Hyper-V"? If so, what do I need to download and where can I find it? Thanks.

Hi guys This time I got a certified for windows server 2003 nic card. I plop in sp2 to my server and it will not talk to the world anymore. There is no connectoid in network. it disappeared. The driver for the card shows up as functioning in device manager. (the card worked perfectly before SP2 was loaded). The Network connections service hung starting. The Com+ event system hung starting. There are no endpoints. thus any service which requires them does not start. anything I attempt to start that depends on having endpoints or which depends on another service which needs them does not start. all services would have started normally if whatever made the…

Hi, after I added a second domain controller to my current active directory setup I notice that every time I reboot a machine it takes something like 20-45 minutes for it to get past the "applying computer settings step" I notice if i simply shut down the second domain controller it gets past this step immediately. Does anyone know what in the second domain controller is causing this issue? I have DNS installed on both domain controllers.. -Drew

Hello all. I manage a Windows Server 2003 Standard SP2 32bit server. Yesterday we have added 2gb of ram to the existing 2gb, for a total of 4gb. While booting the server it shows correctly 4gb. But Windows shows only 3,12gb. The /3GB parameter has been added to boot.ini, but nothing changed. What is missing? Well, I know, is missing 0,87gb :D but what is missing in the procedure that I followed? Thank you.

Adding 2003 Server to domain - first steps
by Guest JPCLYONS- 4 replies

I have a domain where I need to do the following. I am proceeding cautiously since I ma not an MCSE - just an MCP. The server is on the network, but not yet added to the domain. Eventually, it will replace an old server, but not for now. It will be a DC, as well as File Server and DNS. The first step is needed so that I can use tape backup to restore files to the new server in preparation for it to replace the old server. I am concerned that just adding the server to the domain will cause some issues, like the new server acting as the DC, or as DHCP, etc. Unless I run the role wizard and specify what roles the server will have, no services are …

Hello all, I have a simple question regarding DNS setting on my 2nd PDC. Presently I have one W2K3 Server running as a PDC. The DNS is set to AD Integrated. I am guessing that I just need to set the 2nd server the same to replicate the DNS between both servers?
