We have a single domain with several locations connected together via a WAN. One user in one location is having problems accessing any network shares on one server. Anytime she tries to access a file or printer on this server it prompts for a username/password. Once she enters her credentials she can connect to the resources with no problems. If she logs off and back on she must re-enter her credentials to access the server. She is logging onto the domain. She can access other servers in the domain with no problems and without being prompted for her credentials again. Other users can log on to her PC and access the same server normally, although the acc…

DHCP Problem - I think??
by Guest RGA- 9 replies

I am running SBS 2003 SP1 and have recently noticed in the logs that I am getting event ID 1020 that states I have 0 IP addresses left to hand out from my scope. I run a network with only about 20 clients and had the scope set to give out 100 IPs. I have extended the scope and I don't get that error anymore, but upon further investigation I have realized that the "type" of ip addresses taking up all the leases are DHCP/BOOTP. Has anyone seen this or know what may be causing it as I can't seem to figure why all my ips keep getting leased. Thank in advance!

VSS no workee!
by Guest Edwin Smith- 7 replies

About a week ago, I used Acronis Disk Director to resize the partitions on a Dell Perc Raid 5 system with SATA drives. This is in order to give more space to the C: system drive. Afterward I ran chkdsk /f on both volumes to correct errors. Now Backup Exec fails saying the VSS is already running when it isn't. If I click on the Shadow Copies tab in My Computer properties for each volume I get the following: Failed to retrieve volumes that are eligible for shadow copies. Error 0x8004230F: The Shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation. I also see the following event in the Application event viewer: …

CRC error in RAID - which drive died?
by Guest Hunter_Thompson- 7 replies

Hi Everyone, I recently was asked to look at a server that was giving disk {CRC} read errors. It is setup as a Virtual Machine {VM ware} server. I was instructed to break the raid (raid-0), perform a low-level format of the three Sata drives that were in the raid array, and then recreate the raid, reinstall Windows Server 2003 (R2) and the VM ware images. The instructions given to me to low-level format the drives should format around any bad sectors on the hard drive. I did all of the above, and now we still get the CRC error. So it seems one of the drives needs to be replaced, but I don't really want to have to buy 3 new drives when only one is d…

Stop error hotfix download
by Guest Anton- 8 replies
Hi, I have a problem of randomly getting Stop errors on my Win2003 machine. The event log shows the reason code to be "0x805000f" I found that this might be caused by the bug of NTFS driver (KB article #937455) and that hotfix is available. My question is: how could I get this hotfix that will hopefully solve my problem ? Thanks in advance.

Share and NTFS permissions - the right mix?!
by Guest Richard Price- 17 replies

Hi, After thinking I had it all nice and sorted, a user goes and does something which completely invalidated my prior belief. My setup is thus: Windows 2003 R2 server hosting network share \\domain\Users\ Under \\domain\Users are a load of directories - richard, martin, jenny, sam et al. They are users private folders, each mapped to desktop drive U:\ for the various users when they log into their desktops. What I want to accomplish is thus: Users can see all directories in \\domain\Users, but they cannot see the contents of those directories, delete those directories or add new directories. Users have full control within their own directory un…

Backup Application Recommendation
by Guest Absolutely- 7 replies

Anyone have a recommendation for a reliable backup to tape application that's simple for end users to maintain? I've been using NovaSTOR products for some of my customers and the later versions of NovaBACKUP and NovaNET have been horribly unreliable and finicky, especially for restores. I know BackupExec and Arcserve are used heavily, but they tend to be a little complicated for the average end user.

Hello In Windows 2003 Server users can also be put into one or more groups. By putting users into these groups the users may inherit permissions and privileges that were not granted to them directly. If asked to administer user accounts to an existing Windows 2003 Server installation how would one track down all of the groups that a user account belongs to and how would one know what all the permissions and privileges are that the user inherited and were assigned directly? -- JB

Will mainly be used for investigating / learning / upgrading certifications to Windows 2008 with AD and SQL Server 2005 / 2008 on my home network. Should I go for 64-bit or 32-bit? Have no experience with 64-bit. Does it require the double of RAM for nearly all operations? Will upgrade to 4 GB RAM by Christmas. Thanks in advance! jas

Drive mapping problem
by Guest Pascal Goulet- 9 replies

Hi all, Here is a brief description of my problem. Every once in a while (like once avery 3-4 months) I have a very strange problem. One of my user (I have 900 of them) is unable to map network drive via my login script or map the printer who are host on the same server. The weird thing is that my login script do not only map ressources from this server. And every other map drive are mapped without problems. I do not have any lead on the event log of the client computer, the server who does'nt share his ressources or the DC. I first tought it might be a SID problem cause if I copy the user from the AD and recreate it with the same login and grou…

Does DNS Replication issues cause user issues?
by Guest Brad- 7 replies

Recently our corporate office created a VPN tunnel between our PDC and one of their servers. Our server is running Server 2003, DHCP and DNS. Everything was working fine (user permissions, users seeing printers etc..) until corporate made this change. I ran netdiag and while I don’t have the exact error message, my DNS server 192.168.7.2 reports back fine, but then it says there is a fatal error connecting to corporate’s server, 192.168.1.7. Would having this DNS error cause user problems inside my network? I did add a new user a couple of days after this change and while his permissions are set correctly, he is unable to access any of the share drives o…

Expanding a software RAID5 array in Windows 2003
by Guest Calab- 7 replies

Excuse the repost... for some reason my previous posts can't be found on the server. Does Microsoft filter postings from users that don't use a MS NNTP client? I've got a Windows 2003 Server. I have several 500gig hard drives assembled into a software RAID5 array. This array works well. I've just installed a new 500gig hard drive into this PC. It comes up in the Disk Manager and I was able to convert it to a dynamic disk, but I can't figure out how to add this drive to the array. I was able to do this the last time I added a drive to the PC, but I do not remember how. How do you expand a RAID5 array after installing a new hard drive into the …

by Guest Jason- 6 replies

We're using Windows server 2003 Standard version (5.2 SP2); we use the server to store user data & PST files. Everyones current PST file is stored locally on the C drive but all archive PST files are kept on the server with the users connecting to them via a mapped drive 'U'; i.e. user 1 may have: user1: C:\pst\user1.pst user1archive: U\userdata\pst\archive\user1archive1.pst The problem we are experiencing is that occasionally users are unable to open / expand their archive PSTs, when this occurs the whole of the archive folder on the server is 'locked'. The only solution to the problem is to use 'Open Files' under 'Shared Folders' in 'Computer M…

by Guest Burleyman- 5 replies

I have a few services COM+ System Application,Task Scheduler, and Distributed Transaction Coordinator, that I have set to Automatic but when the server gets reboot they reset themselves to disabled. I can then manually change them back to automatic and then start them and the work fine but then when I reboot the server back they go. Nothing in the event logs that point to anything to check. Has anyone had this happen? Where should I begin? This seems to have started after upgrading Sharepoint to SP2. -- Thank you, Burleyman Have a great day!

Trying to Test Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services
by Guest dan- 6 replies

I'm trying to test the use of Terminal Services on Windows Server 2008 Standard but I can't quite get it to work. I've installed the Terminal Services Role and published my Remote Applications using Office 2007 applications for the test. When I try to access the programs using http://myserver.com/ts using Vista SP 1, I can see the programs on the web page and even open them (e.g. Excel) but I immediately get an error message saying " this feature is not supported", and I can go no further. I should mention that my Vista SP1 is a virtual machine on the same Windows 2008 server, running under hyper-v. I'm too new to virtual machines to know if that's causi…

Domain Browsing Issues

We recently imaged a small (< 25) number of laptops for use in our office. Our basic setup is a routed network with servers on a 192.168.10.x network, clients on 3 diff subnets. We have a number of W2k and W2k3 servers, clients are WinXP desk and laptops. We have two AD servers doing DNS & DHCP. What we're running into is with the new laptops, they can't always browse the Microsoft Network. We have an app that we need to browse in order to setup correctly. On the same subnet I can have clients that can browse, while others (usually the new laptops, but not always) can't. They get the "xDomain is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this …
