Question on Terminal Server
by Guest Peter- 1 reply

Hi, I am working on packaging with InstallShield (with MSI), recently we have issues of installing our package on systems that with Terminal Server installed. The systems involved is mostly W2K3 Server, if not all. Now I am assigned the issue and am looking at it, and I got many questions due to my lack of knowledge of Windows (server) systems and remote connection services. First, our product support OSs of W2K server, W2K3 server, XP, and Vista, but my search so far is that only in W2K3 server you can explicitly install (or turn on) Terminal Server, so it can become a terminal server, but not in other 3 OSs (W2K server, XP, and Vista, not conside…

can't execute files over network
by Guest SteveW- 4 replies

Hi, I have a user on an NT domain (XP SP2 client) who can't execute any files located on any network shares. She can create files and delete files in those shares, but not run any executables. The error message is "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." The shares are mostly on 2003 member servers. I even tried giving her Domain Admin rights but that made no difference! I also noted that when she logs on to a PC with Office 2003 installed, the installation wizard runs, but doesn't show any options or dialog boxes, ie it runs in the background. I would like for her to be able…

Hello, can anybody explain on how to setup the management website for Windows Server 2003 certificate services after the certificate services have been installed? I have to reinstall IIS to troubleshot problems with WSUS but cannot make a backup of the configuration as reinstall of IIS shall use default settings... As certificate services are essential for the domain I manage, I have to make sure that I can setup the management website without reinstall certificate services (cause I fear to loose the certificates when uninstalling, but I don`t know if this will happen). by Guest John Whites- 2 replies

I downloaded the client side extensions for Windows XP and have been testing them out with my Windows 2008 test box. Question 1: at this page: http://www.windowsecurity.com/articles/Group-Policy-related-changes-Windows-Server-2008-Part3.html He says you all you need to use this is vista or server 08 with the remote tools... Am I to understand that I don't need to even have a SINGLE domain controller at all upgraded to server 2008 to use the client side extension features like preferences (map drives, shortcuts etc) Question 2: I notice when using the map drive extension that if you give a drive a name and have say 3 drive mappings specified on t…

MMC cannot open the file C:\....\file_name.msc
by Guest David- 10 replies
Win2003SBS SP2 This has just to appear after the possibly coincidental uninstallation of Panda Business Secure Exchange. Start -> Run -> anything.msc and MMC cannot open the file ... This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient rights to the file. From the command prompt mmc.exe browse to a .msc same error.. Any assistance gratefully received. -- David @ Solsletta

Duplicate Network Name Resource / Online Pending
by Guest Ryan Hanisco- 2 replies

I have a cluster group in which a Network Name was created that was a duplicate of another Network Name Resource. This failed one resource group and put the other in online pending. I cannot get the cluster administrator to open and the commend prompt will not let me fail the groups, delete the resource, or do much of anything. Suggestions? -- Ryan Hanisco MCSE, MCTS: SQL 2005, Project+ http://www.techsterity.com Chicago, IL Remember: Marking helpful answers helps everyone find the info they need quickly.

I work at a credit union and for compliance reasons they want us to start documenting and interpreting the event logs of our servers. I do regularly monitor the event logs but I would definitely like some feedback as to how other admins approach this daunting task. I especially would like suggestions as to how to make sense of the security event logs. There are so many events (both success and failure logs) that are perfectly benign. What type of events do you need to look out for? Thank you for in advance for any advice given. Peter

Hello. I have just enabled and setup FSRM quotas on my Windows Server 2003 R2 fileserver by Remote Desktop. Server Freezes when backing up system state
by Guest John Whites- 2 replies

I have a windows server 2003 R2 domain controller that will freeze up (basically if you go to the console all you can see is a blank desktop (no icons just color, no taskbar). This always happens when backing up the system state it seems. I've tried both Symantec Backup Exec 11.0d as well as just regular windows backup and this happens on both. The Machine is running DHCP, DNS, WINS, it's a DC and does printing and KMS. The last thing in the event log is always: wins (2212) Shadow copy 1 freeze stopped. or lsass (404) Shadow copy 3 freeze stopped. Something along those lines. It seems to be somewhat intermittant as well. Some day…

Hi Sometimes I get the following popup on my Windows 2003 R2 STD x64 Server: "Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied." My Server has 8GB of ram. The paging file is right now at 12GB. Before I rebooted the system I already had 20GB. The virtual meomry is set to "System managed size" Is this a normal behavior or do I have to investigate on that? Regards Peter
