Windows server 2003 time is ahead by 1 hour
by Guest jdutro- 2 replies

I have a server 2003 that is 1 hour ahead on the time. I have changed the time using the gui, I hvae also changed it using net time / set. I have changed the time zone and set it back. The server always jumps ahead 1 hour, but it displays it is using Eastern Standard Time. This started after a reboot last night. The server is in a Windows 2003 domain. The domain controller time is correct and the other servers that I have checked are correct. We had a second server with the same problem, after rebooting the other server was fine. Any ideas of how to remedy this?

We run 2 servers 1 x std server 2003 1 x std server 2003 with exhange 2003 We have a number of users with laptops that VPN into the server and use outlook. These users connect to the internet with a 3g connection and outlook works ok One of my directors also has a laptop and again connects to outlook with the 3G adaptor, this user has wifi at home and the only way he could connect to the server by VPN was to change the router ip range to the same as the server ip range 192.168.16.x When I take the laptop to another location ie my house my router uses a ip range of 192.168.0.1 and will not connect to outlook tells me my exchangeserver in not ava…

Hello All, We currently have 3 Windows DCs running. All servers are running under 1 domain (yourdomain.com), very simple. We also have 3 Back End and 2 Front End Exchange 2003 servers running. We would like to get rid of the 1st DC and replace it with another server. Please tell me what are the steps to make this a smooth switchover without shutting down or rebooting any Windows or Exchange servers. Many thx, Ricky

Empty "internet explorer.evt" log on W2K3 server - how do I use th
by Guest pbrill1- 0 replies

I've noticed, I believe since the IE7 upgrade, that my W2K3 servers show a new INTERNET EXPLORER log - but it has always been empty. Q: 1) Where did this come from, and why do I not have any entries in it? 2) Are there settings (group policy settings, perhaps) that I need to add to make this work? Is there any guidance on the use of this log? -- pbrill1

by Guest akumudzi- 0 replies

Application popup: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library : Runtime Error! Program: C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv\inetinfo.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. I am receiving the popup above on a Windows 2003 server SP2 installed. as soon as OK is pressed it terminates IIS Admin Service, Exchange Routing Engine service and SMTP service. These services come right back online in seconds along with the same pop up. The server is also running Exchange 2…

I'm running NTbackup with a VS160 tape drive on my file server. It goes over the network to grab my exchange and sql backup files and write them to tape. Master Browser issue
by Guest Lois- 3 replies
I am running Server 2003. The registry has "TRUE" for "IS THE MASTER BROWSER". Suddenly the WinXP pro machines think they can become the master browswer. The machine's registry was changed to the following [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters] "IsDomainMaster"="FALSE" "MaintainServerList"="FALSE" Some of these machines have inexplicably changed back to "MaintainServerList ="AUTO" This issue is playing havoc on WinXP machines picking up another WinXP machine for its master browser. Can anyone give me suggestions about how to change this permanently and make it work? Thanks in advance.

Hello all, I'm new to this group and hopefully someone here can help me solve my issue. Some information first: Two Server 2003 machines on identical hardware - Dell Poweredge 1950 Both running Microsoft Windows [Version 5.2.3790] Both with exactly same hotfixes/patches Machines were installed a day apart with identical settings - basically nothing from default Active Directory domain - both machines in same OU There seems to be a permission difference between the two, I'll explain a bit more and I will refer to the machines as 01 and 02 - If I open the Printers/Faxes folder and right click in a blank space, 01 gives me "Install a Fax Printer" under …

File locking - server 2003
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Hello, I have a strange issue whereby a user will open a file, work on it and then close it. The user then tries to delete the file and gets the dreaded "Cannot delete file or folder error - It may be in use or write protected.". The file is located on a file share on a server 2003 file server and the user has full permissions on the file and share respectively. This issue occurs sporadically on a multitude of file types but always the same machine / user. I have even tried the good old reformat and reinstall on the client and the deletion and re-creation of the user account but to no avail. Strangely enough the open file does not appear in the file se…

We recently had a problem resulting in loss of data and I would like to get a deeper understanding of the possible causes so I can prevent this in the future. Here are the details: Windows 2003 server standard attached to a StoreVault S500 disk storage device via a GB iSCSI SAN interface. Disk mounted to a LUN on the Storevault device. Volume formatted as NTFS. The interface was up and running for several months then we got several Event IDs 26 and 55 logged as follows: Event Type: Information Event Source: Application Popup Event Category: None Event ID: 26 Date: 2/12/2008 Time: 6:43:47 AM User: N/A Computer: <NAME> Description: Ap…

Re-applying SP2 to server 2003 R2
by Guest Boxington Headmaker- 2 replies

I have been advised to reinstall the SP2 service pack to a server that is running (a slipstreamed install of) Win2k3 R2 SP2, due to a problem with backing up files with Symantec backup exec. (See http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/293132.htm) If I do reapply SP2, will I then be prompted to re-install all the post SP2 updates? Is there anything that I should be aware of before attempting this? Many thanks, Box

heartbeat alerts -
by Guest jewelfire- 1 reply

hi all Hope someone can point me in the right direct. We have windows server 2003 on all our servers , SCOM 2007 and run another application off this to monitor the servers. We have the normal monitors, cpu, etc. Over the last few weeks we have had consistent heartbeat alerts being sent for majority but not all of our servers. Heartbeat alerts - therefore are sending alerts for all the services on the servers. They resolve normally pretty quickly. error logs are showing 7031: service terminated unexpectantly - but nothing much else. Can someone shed any light on what I should look for? or suggest a monitor we may be missing that can help cheers…

preliminary questions/advice on data center scenario
by Guest David- 3 replies

sorry for the cross post here but I think the input I seek would come partially from each group. the main question is, out of typical windows network infrastructures (I'll list my specifics below), what parts can be hosted out of a data center? Are people successfully hosting 'everything' out of a data center these days? very quick rundown of my scenario: small company, one site, that is potentially going to open 6 or more new locations within 1 year. Infrastructure includes 2003 AD, Exchange 2003, Server 2003 file/print services, and a production application that utilizes SQL Server 2000 for data. Those are the main backend components. At a very…

Windows Server 2003 KMS for Server 2008?
by Guest John Whites- 6 replies

I downloaded the KMS for server 2003 to activate vista clients and setup/activated. I think I remember reading somewhere that this one can not activate server 2008 clients. Is there going to be a new download of the KMS server for windows 2003 to activate both vista and server 2008 clients? I have my KMS key for server 2008, will i just activate it the same way I did the other one? If there is a new versions will it require me to reactivate the vista key I already used?

Workgroup / Application Question
by Guest AlvinG- 1 reply

This is more of an applications question, but thought I'd throw it out here. I have a small workgroup of about 30 computers running XPPro, which are physically connected to a large network for Internet access only. > This workgroup is a computer lab used to help users prepare personal documents which contain confidential information. A typical course usually runs about 4 weeks, so one group of users move on after 4 weeks, and then another group starts. During the 4 week period, users save their information to the local drive, which is no security at all because all computers are configured with the same logon and no password. Instructors need to…

Workgroup question - shared folder
by Guest JohnB- 0 replies
I have as a client a small company that is setup with Windows for Workgroups. The other day they added a new PC on their own. In the past they always used, as the local username, first initial and last name. This time though, they used firstname and lastname, with a space in between. I need to setup a user folder on the server (W2K Server) for them. I add the user, add the folder, and setup the permissions for the folder. From the PC they can see the folder but not get into it. On the folder share, Everyone has Full permissions. On the specific user folder, only the new user account and the local admin accounts have permissions (Full). I am gu…

Server migration

I have looked and all the server migrations I see say to similar hardware. I have a customer that wants to migrate from Windows 2003 SP1 to Windows 2003 R2 SP2 on totaly differnet hardware and keep the same server names. Not a problem except for the fact that it is a DC and the only DC at that location. So is there a step by step guild to do a migration to different hardware while keeping the same name. The only thing on this server is DNS and AD.

User account problem
by Guest Kryten- 0 replies

Hi, I look after a Win 2003 SP2 IIS ADAM box that's giving a seemingly strange problem that I'd appreciate a steer with if possible. The box is dedicated to running a single web with a back end sybase database. Sometimes users on browsing to the web get a strange "web service has failed to execute" message and the http session ends. The box gets rebooted and all is well again..for a few days. When this happens the only thing I can see in the logfiles is in the system log Event ID 10004 DCOM errors saying that a certain account could not log in as it was locked out. The user account referenced is the main functional account for the web application and I can l…

Raid 5 with 4 drives
by Guest Adelxt- 7 replies
Hi, I'm presently running a raid 5 with 3 drives. If two of the three drives fail, then I would have to re-install the OS and restore from backup. If I use 4 drives for a Raid 5, would I not have to restore the OS until three of the 4 drives failed? Would it be 4 of 5 drives if I chose to have a Raid 5 using 5 drives. What I'm thinking is that the possibilities of more then two drives failing at once is slim but if that happens I could still keep my OS intact if I used a Raid 5 of 4 drives or more. Thanks Steve
