Cannot Start Executable
by Guest Will- 1 reply

On a Windows 2003 server, I am logged in as an ordinary user and am trying to execute an Intuit application. I am getting an immediate failure when trying to start the application from its program group in the form of a modal dialog that says: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." Normally I am very good at debugging through security problems on file ACLs. In this case though I am perplexed. The eventviewer has failures for the 560 open attempt on the executable that is as follows: Object Open: Object Server: Security Object Type: File Object Na…

Licensing: User or device CAL for standalone app computer
by Guest David Walker- 1 reply
Regarding CALs for Windows Server 2003: The Licensing FAQ has this to say about user and device CALs: "Q. What is the difference between a device CAL and a user CAL? A. A device CAL permits one device (used by any user) to access the server software. A user CAL permits one user (using any device) to access the server software." What about one device used by NO user? We have a computer (running Windows XP) that connects to our domain controller, and runs standalone, and runs software to receive faxes and e- mails that are sent to an archive mailbox. All of this happens with no user intervention (and rarely does any user ever look at the messages i…

Adaptec 29230LPE on 2003 Server 64Bit
by Guest dwhagerman- 0 replies

Any others running the above hardware. We have the following.. Supermicro SuperServer 6025B-URB with the latest BIOS using an Adaptec 29230LPE SCSI card that is attaching a Quantum LTO 200/400GB tape drive. The server motherboard and SCSI card both have the latest BIOS updates, and Adaptec only offers 1 driver for 64Bit. When the driver loads, random reboots happen, as well as blue screens on shutdown. Adaptec is "looking into the problem", but this has been going on for about 3 weeks now, and I need to get the tape drive back up and running! Just curious if any others run the above combo, and if they have any problems (mostly wondering about the combo of t…

Tape Backup

I have setup a daily full tape backup that we rotate between two tapes. I'm using Windows Backup Utility and when it preforms the backup I get the following error: "Cannot locate the specified media or backup device. This backup operation will terminate". If I mark the tape as free then the backup runs. I need the backup to override the information on the tape automatically because I'm not at the office every day and I may not be able to remote in.

Windows 2008 doing AAAA record lookups as well as A lookups even when it has no IPv6 enabled?

Windows 2008 doing AAAA record lookups as well as A lookups even when it has no IPv6 enabled? When doing a DNS lookup from a Windows 2008 box it does a normal A record lookup first then it does an AAAA record lookup, even when IPv6 isn't enabled, doubling the name lookups the machine does for no good purpose and doubling the load on the DNS servers. The only reference I can find on the MS site is for Vista, but implies that this shouldn't be happening http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727035.aspx :- "The DNS Client service in Windows Vista has been designed to minimize the impact on DNS servers when performing DNS name queries through the …

I have Mac users who save to our Windows 2000 file server. They are saving things with file names that Windows will allow you to save but won't allow you to do anything with (If I try and open the file it says file can't be found. I can't rename the file or move the file.) Is there any way to prevent the Mac users in the future from saving with invalid characters? (One of the offending characters is a funky f that has an Ascii code of 408.) TIA - Jeff.

Revert roaming profiles to local profiles?
by Guest jim- 10 replies
On Windows Small Business Server 2003, how would you go about reverting roaming profiles to local profiles for the users? It is a home business with only 1 PC and 2 laptops attached to a 2003 Windows Small Business Server. I think it's overkill, but its what they have presently. They are frustrated at the long shut down and boot up times, so I thought that moving their roaming profiles back to the desktops (especially since there is no "roaming" taking place) would help them with this issue. Does anyone know how this is done? jim

Software RAID
by Guest UselessUser- 2 replies
Hi all, I was just wondering about software RAID, and how the server boots after a failed disk. I have read various horror stories about RAID 1 requiring a boot disk if the primary disk fails.. and that people get around that by putting an mbr on the second disk, and editing boot.ini to reference both disks... I have also heard rumours that if the primary disk fails, and the user breaks the mirror, then attempts to boot the second disk fail because it is listed in the registry as a drive letter other than C: which causes problems... Can anyone confirm/deny any of this and explain how it works?!

I have about 15 WinTerms running off of one App Server (Windows Server 2003). Everyone has Messenger in their profile. Lately, Messenger has been recycling (relogging everone back in) frequently. My customer thinks that the internet keeps losing its connection, but I think it is a problem with Messenger. Does anyone heve any thoughts on this? Is there a way I can tune Messenger? Please don't recommend that I get Messenger server. I can't do that for 15 people!

Dear all: Please, help me out... I installed a clean installation of WSUS3.0 on a Windows 2k3 SP2. I configured the group policy hotfixes distribution. File access and permission help
by Guest UselessUser- 1 reply

Hi, I have walked into a new scenario which is odd for me! Basically I have a server which has this structure E:\HomeDirectory\%username% The folder HomeDirectory is shared, with share permissions set as Everyone Full Access. NTFS permissions have only administrators, creater owner, and system as full control. If we create a new user in AD with their H drive set to: \\server\HomeDirectory\%username% This creates the folder correctly and it is perfectly usable... Now we have a few users who are right clicking their H and selecting make available offline, and this is working fine. However I could not do this myself (I do not run as domain adm…

DSF vs DFS Namespace UI - Does it matter?
by Guest chris.wilkins10@virgin.net- 0 replies

Hi All, I'm setting up DFS on Server 2003 R2 for the first time so this is a steep learning curve. I started by using the 'Distributed File Sytem' from the administration program list. I've set up a few test ROOT's and ROOT TARGET's I've set up a few test LINK's and LINK targets I have set up relication of both LINK's and ROOT TARGET's All seems to work fine. Files are relicating between two file servers. But I'm a bit confused over the DFS Management in the File Server Management MMC. My question is:- Is there any difference in the 'DFS' and 'DFS Namespace' user interfaces (apart from the terms used ie. ROOTs now are refered as NAMESPACEs, LINKs now is…

Help with file system
by Guest Martin Swain- 1 reply

Hi, I have a pretty huge problem with a Windows 2003 server. It's a member server in an active directory domain, and it's configured as a fileserver, also as a WINS server and DHCP server. A little background: our domain controller, an SBS 4.5 machine, recently crashed, and so we created a new domain controller using Active Directory on another Windows 2003 server. The problem with my fileserver started when we disjoined it from the old domain and added it to the Active Directory. Ever since, we have no local access to the file system. When we start Windows Explorer, an error message appears that says 'this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions…

NO FTP from clients behind Routing and Remote Access NAT
by Guest dwadles@gmail.com- 2 replies

I have a feeling I'm just overlooking the obvious, but this is driving me nuts. Clients on a Windows Server 2003 R2 Domain cannot connect to FTP sites. The server itself CAN. Server is 2003R2 64bit, running 2 nics with Routing and Remote Access. Basic Firewall is off. When any machine behind the NAT tries to access any FTP site I get "Connection closed by remote host." I have done some digging and if I run the command "netsh routing ip nat delete ftp" then I have slightly more communication. At this point I am able to log in, go through user name and password, but when I try to do a directory listing, it hangs, until the connection drops. Any help is…

Mainframe to 2003 box via telnet
by Guest AR10T- 0 replies

First I am NOT the expert on servers, I work with our IBM mainframe. We are executing a job on the mainframe that telnets to the 2003 box and starts an executable program on the 2003 box. The program opens a GUI window and runs independent from the mainframe which would then close the telnet session. No data is passed back to the mainframe. Below is the code we use once the telnet session is open and connected to the 2003 box: V2vwatch.exe autostart noshow What we have found is that v2vwatch.exe will show up in Task Manager/Processes list but not in the Task Manager/Applications list. The v2vwatch program does not open up on the screen when starte…
