Volume shadown copy (VSS) stopped by itself
by Guest Patrick- 0 replies

Hello all, I'm running server2k3 x64 + exchange2007 sp1 on a server, i configured the VSS on a volume, it ran daily no problem. My problem is the VSS and MS VSS Provider Services kept stopping by itself everyday, it doesn't failed or error whatsoever but only gives information in the event log said these services entered the stopped state. I can manually start the services again, but it's very annoying. Does anyone have idea about this?

DCDiag - failed with Error Win32 Error 8420
by Guest Alex- 8 replies

Hi. We were in the process of upgrading our 2003 network to 2003 DCs (we only had one 2000 DC) and have an error we can't seem to resolve when running dcdiag. We added a second DC (2003) without problem, unfortunately there was a terminal hardware failure on the new server a few days later and the O/S was unbootable. Rather than restore we cleared out all the entries for the failed DC and re-added it. At this point everything was working successfully apart from one error listed below during DCDiag test. We continued with our replacement of the last 2000 DC and replaced it with a new server running 2003. Again the demotion and addition of the new DC w…

Multimedia Timer Resolution.
by Guest voogru- 0 replies

Hey everyone, My server has recently experienced a situation where the multimedia timer resolution is being set to 1ms instead of the default (10/15ms) I figured it was just some background program that I couldnt kill, so I restarted the server and it was still experiencing the higher timer resolution. I uninstalled nearly everything I installed on the server and disabled all unneeded services to no avail, the multimedia timer is being set at boot to 1ms. The server is a Server 2003 R2 SP2, my only other option is to reload the OS and I want to avoid that of obvious reasons. There have been no driver changes since I experienced this.

First use questions from first Windows Server 2008 test deployment
by Guest Andrew Hodgson- 2 replies

Hi, Today we upgraded a test domain in our environment from Windows 2000 server to Windows Server 2008, and came up against a few issues. These were by no means show stoppers, but I want to get this right for when we do this in a couple of weeks. Firstly, I wanted to put the boot partition as 20GB, but I am reading that we need 30GB partitions or larger for a Windows 2008 environment? Is this the case, or will we be ok with a 20GB partition? We had some errors when using the dcpromo tool to install AD onto the server, mainly because it thought we had an adapter on the network with a dynamic IP address. We are using a teamed system from Broadcom designed …

Tie NIC to user profile in Windows 2003 Enterprise
by Guest requeth@gmail.com- 1 reply

I've had a request from a user... I have a Terminal Services server with 5 NIC's in it. 4 users connect to the box via RDP. The users would like that when they login, they are each assigned their own NIC, so their traffic is separate, and the 5th NIC would be used for their RDP sessions. Since they are doing network administration this makes sense, but I have no idea if this is possible in Windows 2003. Anyone know: a) Is this possible? b) Any resources, tips, faq's, or Ouigi boards I can search for assistance?

Gurus, Have a question concerning sysprep.inf. In this file I have a [GuiRunOnce] section with a single line under it: C:\i386\$oem$\Reg_change.vbs. The file Reg_change.vbs is not being executed. It changes one line in the registry but that winds up not happening at all. Inside the Sysprep folder I have an i386 folder and under that I have a $oem$ folder containing Reg_change.vbs. What am I doing wrong? All other features of Sysprep are working properly. -- Spin

DCOM Server/Workstation Disconnects
by Guest DMiller- 0 replies

Clients were experiencing frequent disconnects from the SBS 2003 Server; turns out the Server was restarting without warning and without anything I could see in the Event Log. While checking Services I saw the DCOM Service, with the Restart Computer option checked after Service failure. I changed the Recovery option to Take No Action and no more disconnects ... but why is that Service there? And will changing the Recovery option cause future problems? Thx in Advance ...

Unable to get desktop on Server 2003
by Guest Lex Elzinga- 7 replies

Hi, One of my servers is acting strange: I am able to log on to the server but the desktop doesn's shop up. When I connect to the server by RDP (not console) the desktop pops up and works just fine. RDP console gives the same error as the console. The only message in the system log is Application Error, Category (100), Event 1000: Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.3790.3959, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.2.3790.4062, fault address 0x0000bee7. The server is running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and is up-to-date using WSUS. Is there a solution to my problem? Regards, Lex Elzinga

Security nightmare
by Guest George- 1 reply

Dear all, First, please be paitient due to my inadequate knowledge in networks. My company has a server (file server and print server with windows 2003 server) and also a proxy server for internet access (Linux). I have 8 users logging on the server and also 3 workgroups (20 persons) which are not logging into the server, but are using it for internet access. I need to secure my network (I may consult an expert to do that, but I need to know what I need first), so data will be secure and also in some cases (users dealing with confidential information) the administrator not to be able to see/read those confidential information. From the little expe…
