New Domain Controller question
by Guest windcrestred- 1 reply

We are thinking of adding a domain controller to our single server network. The existing server is a Dell running Windows 2003 Standard edition which act as a domain controller File and print server and runs Terminal Services in application mode. There are 25 user Cals and 25 terminal server Cals on the existing box. We would use Server 2003 Standard R2 for the domain controller and will probably order another Dell. What do we require for CALs for the new DC? It will only be running as the DC all the other roles will stay on the existing box. I can't remember where to look this up and my headache is getting the better of me trying to find out on Te…

Windows 2000 Server slow network
by Guest letnes- 1 reply

My network is running very slow. I have a printer shared out from the server and a network printer. When I click print in an application it takes a long time ( 1 minute and sometimes 2) for the print page to show up, sometimes I get a message that the printer is not responding to I want to wait. I have some shared drives and the desktops sometimes lose connection to these shared drives. What tools can I use to monitor the traffic on the network, to see what causing this problem as the network only started doing this about a month ago. I would like to test the NIC card and the router to see if there are causing this problem. What tools can I use? Thank …

IIS Style Sheet cache
by Guest Chris- 0 replies

Hi, We're using IIS v6. We create a website using style steets (.css). Sometimes we update the style sheet but when we refresh the web page the style sheet seems to have been cached as it's still displaying the old style sheet. If I recycle the ApplicationPool in IIS it works; if I stop and start the website it works; what is caching the style sheet? Any ideas? Thanks Chris

Delete files based on creation date?
by Guest Hank Arnold (MVP)- 1 reply

I have a process that backs up some Citrix farm information on a periodic basis. The files are not large, but the number gets very large, very fast. Is there a simple command driven way to delete all files that were created more than x days before? I'd like to run this as a scheduled task on the server where the files are stored.. -- Regards, Hank Arnold Microsoft MVP Windows Server - Directory Services

Decommission old Domain Controller
by Guest Jim- 4 replies

Hello, I have an old Server 2003 domain controller that I want to replace with a new machine. This old server contains most of the AD printers that are used in the company and I'd like to be able to move all of them to the new server without having to manually recreate them all. I've seen the Microsoft Print Migrator 3.1 but it looks quite old. Can anyone tell me the preferred (read bullet proof) method of performing this AD printer migration to a new DC? Thanks

Roaming profiles for laptops with multiple users.
by Guest martin- 1 reply

I'm about to deploy a small group of laptops which logon to a windows domain. On the desktop computers we already have roaming profiles and folder redirection to make sure that both "my documents" and the home directory is not a part of the profile. Home directory is simply mapped to the letter H. This works quite well. Our desktops run windows xp. The problem is how to do this correctly for the laptops. Those will be used both internally and externally. I could probably go the simple route here, and just continue having roaming profiles, and let the profile be cached once the laptop is outside our network. The big issue is, as I see it, is that the l…

I have a server that cannot be logged on to. Long story.....original post is in here somewhere.....anyway, my last hope is DART. I'm not an SA customer, so I can only get the 30 day, read-only version.......ie I can't add the mass storage drivers I need to the CD, and I don't have a floppy drive on the server to load drivers from while DART is loading. I can, however, mount the ISO image and copy files to it, so I was wondering - has anyone tried to customise the read-only version of DART? If so, is it just a case of copying the .cat, .sys and .inf files to the correct places in the ISO file and then burning it? STANDARD DISCLAIMER 1. Yes, I know I am …

NTBACKUP.EXE can't be run from Recovery Console
by Guest FUBARinSFO- 3 replies
Hi: Please confirm that you can't use ntbackup.exe to restore system from backup (.bkf) files using the Recovery Console in Windows Server 2003. If this is true, is there another way to run ntbackup to restore the system? I've trired ERD Commander 2005 and it is unable to execute this particular external command. It seem strange that the most fundamentally simple method of system restore is unavailable. (This ignores the use of ASR and the complications of creating the diskette if it wasn't created in advance). Thank you in advance for your help. -- Roy Zider

Report on printing from log files.
by Guest Clubsprint- 0 replies

G'day all We have a requirement to report on what is printed in the office. We have a dedicated 2003 server hosting our printers. The information I need is logged in the system log. Does anyone know of a package or a way to report on this info so we can identify who is printing to where and how much etc. We would probably want to run a report each day about the previous day. Then the "Print Nazi's" can execute the guilty. regards Mark

Syncronizing time: Server 2003
by Guest JR- 3 replies

Hello folks I've got a big problem. We have a Server 2003 controlling our network (AD inside). The folks that installed it (and which I can't contact...) set it up so it would sync time with outside and then send that time to the rest of the network. Problem is, the clock is permanently 8 minuts late! I know that, when they set this up, they ran a registry "patch" with the following code (I've replaced the server's name with OUR.SERVERNAME.DOMAIN.PP for this): [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config] "LastClockRate"=dword:0002625a "MinClockRate"=dword:000260d4 "MaxClockRate"=dword:000263e0 "FrequencyCorrectRate"=dword:000000…

Windows 2003 R2 - SP2
by Guest Jim- 1 reply
Hello, I just introduced a NEW DC on my domain that is running Server 2003 R2 SP1. I have 4 existing domain controllers that are running Server 2003 SP1 and I want to install Server 2003 R2 (disk 2), on these four and then SP2 on all of them. I planned to install R2 on all the DC's first and then SP2 on one DC at a time over a period of days. At some point I will have some SP1 DC's and some SP2 DC's. Is there any problem in doing this upgrade over time as I describe or must all DC's be on R2 SP2 right away? Thanks Jim

A few questions about RIS

I am not sure if this is the right forum or not, but if it is not could someone please point me to the right forum. I have a few questions regarding WDS/RIS First of all is it mulicast or unicast by default? and are you able to change it. Also does the server have to authorized in DHCP in order to work? I removed the authorization of the server in my virtual lab and it still works so I was just wondering if it has to be authorized or if you can get by with out authorizing it and what sort of problems may occur? lastly, this will be used mostly in legacy mode as our organization has not switched to vista yet so I have been using RIPrep to create the…

Windows servers stops responding
by Guest bisi- 5 replies

Hello, we have in our company 3 Windows 2003 servers which one to twice a week simply stop working during the night. We are pinging them with Nagios and from one moment to the other, they stop responding even if the machine is still running. After rebooting them, everything works fine again. Since it is always in the night, my suspicion is the backup(we are using TSM), but I am not quite sure about this. Here is the extract from the event log when the problem appears: The first message appearing is: "The browser service was unable to retrieve a list of servers from the browser master \\<Domain Controller> on the network \Device \NetBT_Tcpip_{1F73F5B1-…

Want to remove an enterprise root cert authority
by Guest ASC Tech- 0 replies
We have an enterprise root cert authority on a windows 2003 server that need to be replaced. We originally set it up just for an OWA certificate. We now have a 3rd party cert for this and do not need the cert server for anything else. We do not plan on using one anytime soon (other then 3rd party certs). When i look at issued certificates it shows the domain controllers (1 of which the Enterprise cert authority is installed on) and the other one. It also shows basic EFS and machine certs - but we are NOT using IPSec or anything that I am aware of that needs it. We have an Exchange 2003 server in the domain also. I was thinking of following KB889250 but a…

I have created some log files using perfmon on a server, but when I copy the .blg files to my local PC, I can’t view them, or it opens up a perfmon instance with counters from my PC. I have created about 14 log files using the perfmon utility, and they are all dated correctly. So how can I copy them to my desktop and view? Desktop = XP; Server = 2003. thx

I have a VB.net application (VS 2005) developed under Windows XP. On the project properties tab, I have the option "Enable XP visual styles". When I deploy my app to another XP platform, the forms look as designed... but when I deploy to a Windows 2003 server platform the background color of the command buttons assume the same color as the form background color... i.e. if the form background color is yellow, then the buttons background color is yellow...What can we do ???
