Upgrading Domain Controller from W2k to W2k3
by Guest Scott- 5 replies

We have our Domain Controller on an old server running Windows Server 2000. We want to migrate this to over to new server hardware and upgrade it to at least Windows Server 2003. On this server we have our Active Directory, Print Server, User Profiles, User shared drives, Applications, DNS, DHCP, Anti-Virus server, and we have another Windows Server 2000 running Exchange 2000 integrated with this DC. Couple questions about this. First off, what is the logical order of upgrading? Should we install Windows Server 2000 on the new machine, then copy everything over, and then upgrade to Windows Server 2003? Or can we migrate to the new machine with Windows Se…

Are people going for X86_64 editions of W2k8?
by Guest Andrew Hodgson- 1 reply

Hi all, We are going to upgrade our domain from W2k to W2k8 in the next few months. We are deciding whether we should go for the 64-bit edition, or just stick with the 32-bit edition? I want to use the servers for other programs, such as Sophos antivirus management, and a possible print server on the domain controllers. We are not using Vmware etc currently, so we got good machines and want to use those machines as much as possible. We have around 200 users. My questions are:- 1. If we install printer drivers onto the machine using add new printer, in a 64-bit environment, will I need to find XP 32-bit drivers as well and install them manually? 2.…

Andrew, What can you tell me about downgrading from 2008 to 2003? I know it can be done, I'm just wondering about activating 2003. Here's a link: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/licensing-faq.aspx See the 3rd question under Other. The more I think about it I realize this is the way I want to go with this purchase. Sorry, I'll need quotes with Server 2008 Standard. Thanks again...... Cleve

Question -- How does the SCM stop and start services? Is there any difference between the processes used by the SCM to do this than those used by the MMC Snap-In (ala "Computer Management") or the NET command?

Hi. We are retiring an old server. The server has WINS. With a few exceptions [almost all servers] all the computers are on DHCP. My question is if it's easier to start from scratch or to migrate from one server to the other? If migrating, any procedure (KB?)? Thanks Gis

Mac OS X (Leopard) Client cannot Add to Windows Server Share
by Guest Scott T. Sanford- 3 replies

Hi, Strange issue here. My new desktop is a Mac Pro and when I attempt to connect to one of my Windows Servers it can read the contents of shares, download, and even DELETE, however on Add, it bombs out. It can successfully add files to my other 3 servers. The only difference between the servers is that the one that I cannot add files to is Windows Server 2003 R2. Has something changed in R2 that would need to be adjusted? Thanks for your help, STS

Distribution list and outlook address book
by Guest RobWUK- 0 replies

I have an issue where a member appearing in the security group doesn't appear when you select this from the global catalog via the global address list. The user also isn't available to add via modify. All other members appear to be present and match. As far as I understand it - the Outlook Address book distribution list should match whats in AD. It is a universal security group i'm using as a dist group in a single domain.

remote desktop for installation of new programs
by Guest Sally- 2 replies

I have 2 questions: 1) Is it ok to use remote desktop for installing programs on the server? I want to put the CD in the server during the day when I'm at the data center, but run the installation during the maintenance window at night. Will it cause problems if I run an installation program from a remote desktop session instead of being at the console? 2) Is it necessary or advisable to use the /console switch with remote desktop when I want to install a program on the server? I'm not sure if using such a console session matters for installations. Thank you.

Windows Server 2003 Heap Fragmentation

We have a service that has been running under Windows 2000 Server SP4 for several years. We have recently upgraded some servers in the farm to Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2. Over time (in some cases as low as six hours depeding on throughput) the service performance degrades and eventually results in an "out of memory" condition. The service is structured as follows: 1. MultiService.exe - C++ 6.0 EXE which is a "service host". 2. NFSTaskDataTransfer.dll - Visual Basic 6.0 DLL which is the service logic. 3. NFSTransfer.dll - Visual Basic 6.0 DLL (installed in a COM+ library application) which is the data access tier. I have uploaded the fo…

troubleshooting 560 object access failure audit entries

Running a Windows 2003 server in a workgroup only. In the name of "security", I have "audit object access" set to "failure" in my local security policy. I'm also auditing hklm\software and hklm\system for "failure" on all events. Lastly, I'm auditing all of my hard disk partitions for for "failure" on all events, from the root directory on down. Yeah, I know this is a lot, but it's not my doing... Just trying to deal with all of the event log chatter that results. All of my applications are working fine, but I get almost constant "failure audit" "object access" 560 errors in my security event log. These failure audits are both on file system and registry o…

Domain Controller becomes unresponsive after 7 days
by Guest Eric Guzman- 3 replies

We have a specific printer shared on a Windows 2003 Domain Controller that will not let us get into the properties of the printer. It is configured to use a Static IP address for the printer port and is using the HP Laserjet 4300 PCL 6. I can just delete it and recreate it, but did not want to do that. I will attempt to change the driver to another one. In addition, this server is a file server and server every 7 days it becomes unresponsive and gives out an error about being low in memory, but everyday memory utilization averages 600MB and it has a total of 4GB of memory. The following event ID is logged. Event ID: 2019 The server was unable to…
