I found the KB article that address a Win2k3/Vista issue (939820). But my issue is the same but it is Vista/Win2k8 the only way i can connect is via the local account. Everytime i try and connect via an ADS account i get the error discribed in the KB article. Does any one know how fix this issue. If i apply the work around it won't connect since 2008 only uses the Network Level Authentication. hopefully this makes sense thanks for your help Justin

Encryption - Secure Email
by Guest S Sainsbury- 0 replies

I have setup an Enterprise CA, I have assigned Key Recovery Agents and Key Archival. I am testing my ability to recover encrypted data before rolling this out and have come across an issue I need help with. Using EFS I can recovery other users data using the KRA without issue. However my problem is when dealing with recovering emails that have been encrypted using SMIME. Currently we use Journlaing to capture copies of all emails, If I try to read an encrypted email that has been journaled I am unable to. I have assigned a KRA certificate and installed it but this appears to make no difference. Ultimatley I could logon as the user and install the …

2003 & Sharepoint
by Guest Joe K- 1 reply
Hi folks, I have a few questions about implementing Sharepoint on a 2K3 server. I have a network that will be using 2K3 server for File/Print services. They have an NT 4.0 DC that is going to go away. Also there is a Scalix mail server that will be kept on the network due to all listserv info etc that is already in place, so SBS ins not needed which I know has Sharepoint ready to go on it. Basically, they are going to need an intranet page to share information. There are about 18 users. Questions: 1. Does Win2K3 Server come with Sharepoint (on Standard or Premium R2)? 2. Do I need separate CALs for it or does 2K3 CALs cover it? 3. Are there any other …

New domain, same network
by Guest Ldoodle- 1 reply

Hello, I have inheritied a small network of about 6 servers and 60 computers that has numerous problems all over the place (DHCP, DNS, GP, AD etc) for the past couple of years (i'm in my second week!!!). To avoid waisting time trying to fix these issues, I was thinking of maybe rebuilding the domain from scratch instead, as over the past 5 or so years the previous team didn't really demote old servers properly and this has left stuff in the above services, hence the problems. The only problem with doing this is that rebuilding the domain will require all users/computers to be re-added etc and I don't think this will be possible without down-time, whi…

alternative backup

I think my tape drive went "kablooy". I was using backup exec and a benchmark dlt tape drive. until i get another tape drive and install it and configure backup exec to use it what do you think if I... Use windows backup and back up entire drives and system states to another machine (a client, servers don't have enough room to hold their own back ups) then copy the backups to a removable hard drive (usb) There are issues with connecting the removable hard drive directly to the servers, mapped shares and drive letter assignments seem to be confusing the server(s). I DON'T want to be "naked" Suggestions?

Is there a recommended limitid size for NT logs?
by Guest jogging- 2 replies

What I mean is if we could suggest our cumstom to set the NT log(e.g system log ,security log) to a appropriate size as lager as it can be. Per my experience in former times, maybe 10MB or 20MB still would be fine, so what would be the limitation? Can anyone know it?

Restore from older backup is not overwriting registry
by Guest FUBARinSFO- 4 replies

Hi: I'm trying to roll back my Windows 2003 Server C:\ drive to an earlier configuration, before the registry got contaminated and mangled. But restoring the full .bkf, specifying overwite files, does not seem to be overwriting the system registry files (among other files). There's some trace in the .log report of access denied with SxS file manifests, but nothing about failure to overwrite the registry files themselves. I've unchecked "preserve existing volume mount points" and specied always overwrite. I must be missing something pretty basic here. Is this an illegal operation under Windows 2003 Server? I would have done it from either the Recovery C…

Setting up virtual printers on Win2K3
by Guest The Doctor- 0 replies
I love support!! Quick question about setting up virtual printer. what are you saying you ask? The scenario is this: There is a Win2K3 server colocation. There will be no printers attached. The user comes in remotely and works on what is needed. The printer that are needed are HJ Laserjet 1018 and a Xerox WorkCentre M20i . One of my MS certifed friend gave me this advise: use IIS on the Windows Server to make a printer available to remote client computers. To do this you need to do the following: 1) open control panel on the Windows Server. 2) open Add/Remove Programs 3) open Add/Remove Windows components (left side of screen option…

how to migrate domain and its users?
by Guest gonzo- 1 reply

hello, I was given a HP laptop in my work with Windows XP preinstalled. the problem is that the system is equipped with all bells and whistles, consumes a lot of resources and works slower than it could. Of course, I am not allowed to delete the preinstalled os, which is standardized for a company, but I am allowed to resize the original partition and make another bootable one. this is what I plan to do. but one thing bothers me: is there a way to migrate existing domain and its users, so that I could log in to domain on new environment? frankly speaking I know nothing about domain logons -- where should I start reading? could you point me to some tuto…

How to exclude non-system files from a ASR
by Guest Luca Minudel- 3 replies

Hi all, my windows system is installed in C:\ and in C:\ there are also other data files (say db data files, documents, pictures and so on). Non I'm doing an ASR backup every time I made some changes to the system (say an istallation of a patch, a new driver, a new devices, a new program, etc.) unfortunally the ASR backup wizard do select also the data files, this make the ASR backup very time consuming because the data files. Note that I do already buck up all data files periodically in incremental mode so the ASR do buckup them twice. how can I exclude the data files prom the ASR? TIA, Luca Minudel

Can I use DFS to copy files / shares?
by Guest Sandy Wood- 3 replies
We're in the process of relocating some big user and group share directories. We want to move them from one logical drive to another one, on the same server. I thought that maybe DFS could be a help in this move. It seemed that we could, say, setup a DFS root with a namespace of UsersHome. Could we specify two locations, say H:\users and J:\users and then let DFS replicate everything from H: to J: ? Would this work? -- Sandy Wood Orange County District Attorney
