WSUS Question after transferring to new server (Master or Upstream
by Guest Saral6978- 9 replies
I successfully set up a new Master server and now have my replicas sync'ing successfully after I ran through the export/import process of transferring the WSUS content from my original Master to my new one. However, there is one slight issue. When I log into the new Master/Upstream server, it basically says all updates need to be approved for installations, rather than where I had left off before the switch. Even if I do a sort for the last 2 months, it still brings up all the updates (going back years), which are like 1100+ updates. Is there any way to import the approval information from my original master server to the new one so it knows that I have i…

I have an accounting application that is running on server 2003. The client piece works fine, but they wrote it so application backup needs to happen locally. I cant give the user Domain admin rights, but did allow remote desktop to the server. The user can logon but the backup wont run without elevated priveledges, and I dont see power users anymore. Any help would be great.

2003 PerfMon Counters AWOL
by Guest Adrian- 3 replies
All, Got a strange one on a Win2k3SP1/Exch2k3SP2 server. All of the Performance Monitor/WMI counters appear to have lost their labels. If I fire up PerfMon, I get nothing on the initial graph. If I try to add a counter, I get a choice of Performance Objects, each of which contains a number of individual counters... but they're all only identified by numbers. I can't actually add any of them to the graph. I can add counters from other machines to PerfMon on this machine fine, though. Admin Tools/Computer Management/Services & Apps/WMI Control/Properties gives me the correct details. I've tried running Exctrlst.exe from the Support tools, and it c…

Installation locks up eating memory
by Guest Adrian Brown- 11 replies

Hi I posted a few days ago about a problem with SBS2003 fresh install locking up during server tools setup on Internet Explorer 6.0 installtion. I had a reply saying it was probably due to an active internet connection. Since this i have installed a brand new harddrive and pulled the plug on the router while attempting the setup. Again the initial part of the setup is fine, its when it gets to the actual server configuration. Its gets as far as installing server tools, the message says its doing internet explorer 6.0. Ive left it at this point for several hours and it gets no futher. A look in the process list shows the setup process is just eating more an…

Windows 2003 Server Enterprise, or Small Business Server
by Guest chris_huh- 6 replies
We are looking at properly setting up the business's network and i was wondering which would be the better option. There would only be about 4 or 5 client PCs and one server, maybe a network printer too. Looking at the two i would imagine SBS would be the better option, as it has Outlook Web Access, which would be very useful, and by name is designed for small businesses. Enterprise seems like it might be a bit too much for this size network. Is this right?

If I login as admin and run the batch files they work fine with no problems but if I use the schedule set to run under admin they say running in the scheduler but don't do anything. Anyone got any ideas Cheers glenn

Hiya all, I am gonna build a network and this is what its gonna look like(I hope), http://i16.tinypic.com/4rafpn7.jpg PC1 : Windows XP Professional PC2 : Windows 2003 Server PC3 : Windows XP Professional the big question I have now is the following, people here have already told me I should set up forwarders in my Windows 2003 DNS section, or just forget about using them and just stick with the root hints already in there. But my big issue with this is, my PC2 isn't supposed to be online all the time, its actually a fileserver that I occasionaly boot so I can transfer my files to. But the way people here suggested I set it up(like you can see in th…

by Guest martin.necas@gmail.com- 6 replies

Dear all, I am suffering with high usage of non paged memory pool on my clustered servers running on Windows Server 2003 Server R2 Enterprise SP2. The typical usage is 100 - 110 MB. The memory pool tag MmCm is using 50 MB of NPP. Let's describe my setup. I have 3-node cluster consisting of 2 HP DL 380 G5 servers and one virtual server on VMware (this server acts as an arbiter in MNS MSCS cluster). Both servers has 4 GB of physical RAM installed. Both servers is using /3GB /PAE /USERVA=3030 boot.ini parameters specified. I have clustered Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server Enteprise with SP2 running on one one. Security Log Question & Hotfix?
by Guest Daniel P. Cayea- 9 replies

I have this peculiar problem with my security log on my domain controller. I've set up my security log to overwrite events as needed, but the size is large enough that it will not overwrite events unless they are like two weeks plus old. Problem is, every time I log onto my server I get the "Security Log is full" message. I go into the event viewer and change the atributes of the log, and it gets set back to "Do not overwrite". I remember a while back there was a hotfix to fix this, can anyone remember it or help me with this issue? Thanks Dan

Defragmenting hard drives on Windows Server 2003/SQL Server
by Guest Zaur Bahramov- 3 replies
Hi! I've noticed that in the company where I've recently started to work in servers hard drives where never defragmented. Servers (windows 2003) are mounted on Vmware ESX Servers. I've tried to defragment hard drives using the windows defragmenter, but on some server, especially with huge files (over 100 Gb database files on partitions with about 200 Gb) some files where not defragmented. So, I'm now considering purchasing a third-party defragmenting utility for doing this. Does it worth investment or most would use the standard defragmenter? I like Diskeeper, besides, native windows defragmenter is a reduced part of Diskeeper. Does it worth inves…

Server will not Shutdown but only Restart
by Guest Luis Fajner- 9 replies

I'm building a new Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition (32 Bit) on a Dell PowerEdge 2900. Right after I installed the OS, I can Shut the Server down without any problems. But, after I installed Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 the Shutdown option will not Shut down but only Restart. Hardware and Software are brand new ones. I wipped every thing three times and started over again, having the same symptom. I didn't install any application yet. I only have the OS. The Event Viewer is clean, not even a yellow entry. Can somebody help me to find a solution? I couldn't find any article regarding this problem. Thank you, Luis

Server 2003 R2 x64 SP2 taking forever to install
by Guest robr- 6 replies

I've installed many service packs, but never this particular one and this just doesn't seem right. I'm using RDP to install SP2 and it completed downloading and started installing approximately 3 hours ago and the progress bar is maybe 15% of the way done. It does seem to still be running. This is a brand new clean Server 2003 install, the very first thing I did after installing was run Windows Update. This is on a Dell PowerEdge 2850 with 4gig of memory and a 15K SCSI drive. Any ideas or is this actually "normal"?

Rebooting server causes PC to lose connection
by Guest Net Admin- 8 replies

I have 2 Domain Controllers at my site. Both are Global Catalog Servers, DNS servers, WINS servers, and are version 2003 Standard with SP2. When I reboot either one, some of my servers report errors about not bieng able to connect to other servers in my domain such as the database server. In the IP properties of each member server I have both DNS server IPs entered. Is there a timeout period that has to occur before the member server switches over to another DC to authenticate or resolve names? If so, how to I speed that process up? Thank You

Hello, I'm having a crazy issue where I set a laptop users profile to roaming so could than pull her profile to a new laptop I'm building for her however, now that I have her profile on the new machine, I removed the line in her profile so it will stop roaming. Now, for some reason I can't get the system/server to stop redirecting her desktop. That is the only folder being redirected and when I change the path in the registry it reverts back. This happens on any machine I log in to with her credentials. Help please! :) -- Regards, Jeremy Johnston I.T. Engineer CCNA - MCP

2003 Server Replacement
by Guest John- 7 replies

Hi, Have two windows 2003 Domain Controllers. The original DCs is flaky and needs to be rebuilt, hence I need to move all it's roles to the other DC. Whats the order of work to do? I understand it to be Fismo transfer to other DC DNS transfer to other DC DHCP transfer to other DC Disconnet and rebuild server. Do I have to do this in any particular order? The other server is already running a DNS service and is also a GC server.
