No Windows Home Server group -- aaarrghhhh!
by Guest milleron- 1 reply

The Windows Home Server group has a forum. It takes me HOURS to accomplish on their damned forum what I could do in minutes via Usenet. I've looked, but I don't see any other groups that are displaying posts about WHS. Has anyone here noticed if there's any Usenet group that's appropriate for this topic? Ron

Windows 2003 Certificate Authority Question
by Guest Andy H- 0 replies
Hi I have setup a Windows 2003 Enterprise Certificate Authority, this is installed on one of two domain controllers. Although there is an Active Directory domain, the is going to be no AD integration, no auto enrolment and the user accounts will not be stored in the active directory that the certificates will be used for. I have setup the Certificate Authority and IIS to publish the CRL on the same AD server, if this server falls over though we loose the CRL. Is there a way I can publish the same CRL across two servers using IIS? Or can you integrate the Certificate Authority to share the CRL with Active Directory across the two domain controller…

The problem deleting certain files, to be more exact Microsoft Access *.ldb files are the biggest culprit. I‘ve also had some trouble renaming / deleting Microsoft Excel files. Error message “The action can’t be completed because the file is open in another program” Current workaround Rebooting the server, Then delete the (database-name.ldb) The problem is occurring on two separate physical servers. Both servers are running Windows 2003 server standard 32bit with SP2 installed. Troubleshooting Steps 1) Tried using the windows command line tool openfiles.exe to locate any open file-handles. 2) Tried using the Sysinternals Handles v3.…

Re: Remote Desktop to Win2k3 SBS freezes/pauses when moving mouse Sorry for the delay. I have tested all the possibilities, it appears this only happens when connecting to this server via a Windows Vista desktop. If I connect to the server via a Windows XP Virtual Machine (VMware) it runs fine. I am connected to 3 other SBS 2003 servers and do not have this issue, it appears to be Windows Vista to this one particular Windows 2003 SBS server. Just to clarify: If I open the remote desktop System Manager opens full screen, if I click the minimize button with the mouse, the button is highlighted but nothing happens, after about 6 seconds the windows…

Find out what a security group does
by Guest UselessUser- 0 replies
Hi all, Imagine the scenario, you are browsing your AD and you find a group with a strange name, with a few members in it... You then decide to attempt to either delete it or rename it to what it actually does, but because of the strange name, you have absolutely no idea what it is for? Is there a tool which can scan folders and list all the ACL's so I can find out what exactly it gives permission to?

Client Machines getting slower
by Guest Laphan- 3 replies

Hi All Wondered if you could help. I work for a primary school and we have just put in a Win2003 server to use AD/GPO on the network. We have around 35 PCs and 2 printers on the network and we wanted to do this server setup to create a better infrastructure and lock things down to shop idle 'child-like' hands :0) 16 out of the 35 PCs are situated in our ICT suite and as they were all of the same make, ie Acer F1 desktops, we were able to clone a set installation and educational progs onto each machine. Now I know that the first time an account logs on it can take time for the gpo bits and pieces to kick-in, etc, but we are now 4 months into the …

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can help me with a problem I'm having with our Windows 2003 server. Basically the problem we're having is that the IIS service and the www service intermittently crashes and then tries to restart. I have followed the instructions in KB885881 article and installed the patch, however this has not resolved the problem. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can resolve this problem?

Share and NTSF permissions...
by Guest Mrpush- 17 replies
Hi, Did I say I can't stand Sharing and security on Windows? Ooops, just did. Anyway, I'm studying hard on how to understand Sharing vs NTFS. Still makes little sense, but I'm getting better. What I need is a utility that would allow me to AUDIT my entire network and show me all my USERS and GROUPS and what permissions they have, that would be great! Is there any such utility? (freeware would be nice!) I'm aware of the "Effective Permissions" in the settings, but that is only good for a single person/group. I'd like to see a table of users and groups and then all the SHARE / NTSF permissions and what overrides what. Any ideas? Thanks…

I have a W2K server, that the users have been acessing with XP Professional and Vista Business for the past year. We have a new machine (HP) that came with Vista Home on it. The user was acessing the terminal server without any problems until a couple of weeks ago, they updated Vista and whenever they would acess the TS, they would get a message that the TS License was going to expire in X number of days. Anyway it is down to a few days left and I was wondering what to do. None of our other machines are getting any messages like this. TIA

Shared folder on removable drive stops working in Server 2003 R2
by Guest Dmitry Anikin- 0 replies
I have Server 2003, there's a removable USB HDD which has a shared folder. It's used as read-only, caching is turned off. If you remove the HDD and then insert it again - the shared folder no longer works. It says it's still shared, but if you enter it through the network it's just empty, you don't even get an error. Now, if you do "safe removal" then everything is fine, but alas there's no one to do that (someone comes, switches hdds and goes away, doesn't have a console login) and anyway if the folder is in use safe removal doesn't do anything. The only thing I can think of is running some script through scheduler which checks every minute for the folder's …

RE: Administrator Account (Local Policy)
by Guest Lumpjaw- 13 replies

RE: Administrator Account (Local Policy) Greetings all, I have an interesting problem, I cannot use the administrator (user) account to log on to my SBS 2003 R2 locally. I get an error that says local policy does not allow logon. This problem is with the user-administrator, not the group because other administrator accounts can logon on just fine. Can anyone shed a little light on how I can fix this so I can get back to using the 'administrator' account? Thanks for the help. -Lumpjaw

File Server Question
by Guest Bromc- 1 reply
You have a 2003 R2SP2 server, acting as only a file server, and it's getting slammed. CPU is fine, RAM is fine, Disk use is going crazy. Is there a way to tell which user is writing what file that might be causing the bog down? I know you can see who's connected to the server, and what files they might have open. I can see what processes are running. I want to know a way to see disk usage as I would processes. Percentage doing what and who's doing it. Thanks.

I installed SQL Server 2005 x64 SP2 on a Windows Server 2008 x64 Standard version. I installed the workstation portion of SQL Server 2005 on a Vista x64 system. When I tried to connect from the client, I got a SQL Server error 10060, could not connect. I went to the Windows Server 2008 and turned off the firewall and then could connect from the Vista client to the server. Can anyone tell me how to properly configure the firewall to allow SQL Server traffic? TIA Flomo
