Installing EXE programs without Domain Admin user
by Guest integrii@gmail.com- 1 reply

Read the post on my blog if you like: http://blog.integrii.net/?p=102 It says: No really; how do you do it? I’ve looked through all of group policy and the closest you can get that I’ve seen is to allow installs with ‘elevated privileges’ which I then found out ONLY applies to MSI packages… not EXEs. What I really want is for whatever user is logged in to be the full local admin of the computer they are sitting at. The trick? Do it remotely without ever logging into the remote computer locally. It would be far too annoying to go to each computer and manually specify that their user is part of the bulitin/ administrators (local admins) group. Oh yea…

Print Range Issue
by Guest Rich- 1 reply
When a user tries to print from Word using a print range (for example, the document is 20 pages long and the user only wants to print pages 4-10), the job fails. There is no error on the user side of things. From their perspective, "nothing" happens. However, there is an error on the print server as follows: --------------------------------------------------- Event Type: Error Event Source: Print Event Category: None Event ID: 6161 Date: 5/21/2008 Time: 1:55:11 PM User: <omitted> Computer: <omitted> Description: The document Microsoft Word - Cards.doc owned by <omitted> failed to print on printer Gnuckwork Pri…

How to rename network drives in a logon script?
by Guest chrbar- 1 reply
Hi, I've used a script in the past, but I don't remember it! I think it was a batch file in a logon script. It was a script which allow to rename the network drives with a choosen name, instead of the default name. Network drive with default name looks like: temp$ on 'ghost1' (T:\) Network drive renamed looks like: Temporary Files (T:\) Do you know which script can I use to do that? Thanks, Chris

Does the KMS service only count non-virtual machines running Server 2008 towards the initial 5? I am trying to roll out 08 Std and am running into problems with getting my count # to go up. I think I have narrowed it down to actual servers vs virtual machines. I have done 7 upgrades with 3 being actual and that is the number the KMS Server is showing as its current count: 3. I figured that it would be 7 by now, but its not. I didn't see it anywhere that says specifically that the count is only on real servers...

Static WINS mapping migration
by Guest Stu- 1 reply
Done a lot of googling on this subject but can't seem to find the answers. I have a number of Windows 2003 WINS servers in a spoke/hub replication topology. There are some static WINS mappings scattered about the different servers but I'm looking to remove one particular server (call it SRV-A) from the topology but cant seem to see the recommendation way to migrate a static WINS mapping whilst maintaining 100% uptime and availability of the record. In the lab I had limited success manually readding the records statically to another owner (SRV-B), this bascially just duplicated the record on the new owner, 1 version of the records was set to infite with owner S…

Dumb Server 2003 licensing question
by Guest chaucer- 1 reply
I have tried reading the Microsoft licensing agreements and have found many parts of them to be opaque. Hence my post here. I have a simple question: if I decide to set up a redundant domain controller (Dell Poweredge) running Server 2003 Standard, am I required to purchase another complete set of CALS? I have 30 user CALS on the first server. The second server will be in the same domain serving the same people. I have searched Microsoft's site with no luck. -Thanks. Patrick

DHCP "DNS Domain Name" Option format
by Guest computerbobster@gmail.com- 0 replies
- 119 views
I've recently been assigned to a company that has several domains. In the DCHP scope, the "DNS Domain Name" option is set with the domain name that the workstations and users reside in along with the parent domain with a semi-colon separating them. I cannot find anywhere any documentation to say that this is OK. That it's ok to have 2 domain names listed, and what seperator to use is hard to determine. The format looks like this: child.domain.net;domain.net Is this right? Can someone point me to some KB article that says this is right?

Windows 2003 - can't back up system state
by Guest Geoff Lane- 5 replies

I posted this several days ago, but got limited response. So I'm asking again but giving fuller information in the hope that someone can point me in the right direction. I suspect that unless I can repair/reinstall the Volume Shadow Copy Service, I'm facing a "nuke and rebuild" :( This is a Windows 2003 standard server domain controller. Recently I changed anti-virus vendor and something went awry while uninstalling the old software and installing the new, so that I'm now getting the following errors when my scheduled task to back up the system state runs. All help gratefully received, Geoff. From the Application event log: Event Type: Erro…

Changing CMD.exe back to Window not from Full Screen?
by Guest Dennis_S- 2 replies

How do you change the cmd.exe to run in a window rather than full screen? This is running cmd from Start->Run. Running the shortcut is fine and runs in a window. But when I run cmd.exe from Start->Run it is full screen. I would like to get it back to display in a window. Thanks.

Network mapped drives showing disconnected
by Guest FSN Tech- 0 replies

I have two Windows 2003 Standard Terminal Servers and a Windows SBS 2003 server. There is a script that maps network drives on the Terminal Servers when users log in. I have 2 network drives that show disconnected but work and if I do a net use from a command prompt those drives do not show up in the list. These servers also have Symantec Anti-virus 10.1.1 which I have seen there may be an issue with network mapped drives. I found this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932463 and deleted the two drives, logged off and back on but the drives did not map from the script. I would appreciate any help I can receive to fix this issue.

API UpdateRegistryFromResource fails with error 0x8007007e
by Guest wn123456@gmail.com- 0 replies

I have a COM service created using the ATL wizard. It works fine on few systems and on 1 system it fails to register. System has, OS Name Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition Version 5.2.3790 Service Pack 1 Build 3790 (Same version other systems it is working fine) The API, UpdateRegistryFromResource returns error 0x8007007e. After manually copying the interface registry entries the service registers fine and works fine. Has anyone come across such issue ? Code snippet of the register part is, ------------------ inline HRESULT CServiceModule::RegisterServer(BOOL bRegTypeLib, BOOL bService) { HRESULT hr = CoInitialize(NULL); …
