planning switch to MSI deployments when software already "out ther

Hi chaps, I've been working in this SMB for over a year which admittedly is about 5 times larger than the er, small business i worked for previously and one of the things that excited me of working somewhere bigger were the idea that so much of the place would be running automated processes for software installs and having cool management systems going on but to be honest it feels like this place is stuck in the NT 4 days. The business has been kind enough to fund me some proper training though and i'm an exam away from being an MCSA - yay. Anyhoo, i'm trying to drag this place into the future, or more like today anyway. I'm going through and writing…

When installing w2k3 there was a screen where you defined number of max concurrent connections allowed per server. In w2k8 there is no such screen. Is there any default number of concurrent connections predefined or there is no limit? tnx.

Page faults and crashing apps
by Guest Jon H- 2 replies

Hello, I have a W2003 Terminal Services server providing access to an accounting package MYOB Enterprise. This software is supported as TS compatible by the developer. The server is a dual Xeon box with 4GB RAM, there are 15 clients. MYOB crashes without warning, with a message along the lines of "the memory could not be read". I am trying to track the cause and have been using perfmon. I notice in time frames surrounding a crash, page faults / sec can rise to 100,000 or more for a couple of seconds. The application executable myobp.exe does not seem to be directly causing this as I have tracked page faults against that prog. I would like to …

Migration DC's and Exchange
by Guest Mark- 0 replies

Hey Everyone, We have purchased 3 high end servers with a SAN and plan to virtualize our existing server infrastructure. We also plan to migrate from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. Is is best to migrate the two Windows 2003 R2 DC's first to the virtual environment or migrate exchange 2003 to 2007 first then do the DC's after? Exchange 2007 will be hosted in a virtual environment as well. Any advice or reference materials would be great. Cheers, Mark

Save settings etc during migration
by Guest Curious Joe- 1 reply

I am currently running a small Win 2003 SBS network. I have a 2nd 2003 R2 box setup running SQL 2005. All of my users (~25) are on XP Pro. I am going to do some major hardware upgrades to the servers and want to move to a full 2003 R2 server network. Is there a utility that I can use to keep all of the users' favorites, desktops, etc etc so I can migrate them all to the new domain easily. I would like this to be as painless as possible for the users. Thanks, CJ

PAE Switch enabled by default
by Guest Pirooz Javan- 1 reply

I'm adding PAE switch to many of the servers in my farm that have 4GB+ memory. I was considering adding the switch to all my servers and my build template by default. Microsoft doesn't have this switch enabled by default and I'm wondering if there is some reason (performance?) that would cause me not to have PAE switch enabeld on ALL my servers, including ones with less then 4GB memory.

Installing Windows Server 2008 certificate enrollment Web pages
by Guest tcguy100- 0 replies
Per the following KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922706), we would like to install the Windows Server 2008 certificate enrollment Web pages (on our Windows 2003-based certificate authority box) in order for Vista boxes to request/process certificates. Prior to doing this, however, I wanted to confirm whether our existing certificates would be affected by this action. More specifically, would installing/upgrading to these new pages cause existing certs to be removed or stop working? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Windows 2003 R2 and Windows Server 2003 SP2
by Guest Juneday- 1 reply

Our domain has DC's with Windows server 2003 SP2 on them we have started purchasing machines with 2003 R2 on them and I have a couple of questions. 1. Can we promote a 2003 R2 server to a DC in an environment with 2003 SP2 DC's? We don't have enough licenses to upgrade all of our DC's so that would not be an option. 2. If number 1 is not possible can we join a 2003 R2 server to a domain with 2003 SP2 DC's?

Is there a way to assign permissions to a W2K3 Network Service account on a remote folder located on a W2K server? W2K server does not appear to recognize the Network Service account when W2K3 SSIS package script tries to access remote folder on a W2K server. Package is running under Network Service account because it is input to an SSRS report running from a W2K3 Report Manager.

Puzzled Over CALs
by Guest TheScullster- 0 replies

Hi all Can anyone clarify the CAL situation for me please? I have one or two users who have both laptop and desktop machines. The person/client is the same, but they can logon to Windows services and Exchange via either device. Technically is this one CAL or two for this type of user? Do administration accounts on the servers themselves class as CAL for Exchange? If either of these cases are considered CALs then I believe we may be approaching capacity. If I add one too many user to AD or one too many Exchange account, will a prompt occur to alert me? Windows Server2003 and Exchange Server2003 with Outlook2003 and 2007 clients. TIA Ph…

Redirection / Synchronization errors....
by Guest Mrpush- 1 reply
Hello, I'm using folder redirection and have setup file Synchronization as well. Working good so far. My only issues is this. When users log off, they get sync errors on files from other users. "access denied" Yes, my users roam and I leave a copy of their profile behind. The only way I see to avoid these errors it to give all users full permissions to the redirection share. I DON'T want to do that however. Is there anyway to get these errors to go away on logoff? Why does it try to sync files for users that are not even logged on? Can these "syncs" be removed for the other users? Thanks much, Mark

How do I restore incremental backups?
by Guest OscarVogel- 4 replies
I'm using ntbackup on a Windows 2000 Server. I have finished restoring the big "normal" backup of a shared directory. Now I have a several incremental backups that I need to restore. How do I do that in order to end up with the directory as it was when the last incremental backup was done? I'm guessing that I need to choose "Replace the file on disk only if the file on disk is older". But it worries me the default choice is "Do not replace the file on my computer (recommended)". That doesn't sound logical. Why would I restore if I wasn't wanting to replace files? What am I missing here? BUT MAINLY, how can I restore these incremental backups w/o…
