Backup in Server 2008 is AWESOME
by Guest Dominick- 1 reply

I just finished testing the restore of the new backup feature in Windows Server 2008, it is so sweet! I have been doing backups to an external USB drive for about 2 weeks. Today I fished around and kept installing stuff until I hosed the machine - installing another disk driver to my RAID array did the trick. System would not even do a repair from DVD! Would not boot, nothing. So I just clicked on Repair when I booted from DVD, inserted my diskette for the disk drivers needed to access the RAID array, it presented full restore as an option, I selected it, it restored both logical disks (both RAID 1), rebooted, and voila! A perfect working system resto…

Vista srv: nonpaged pool
by Guest Paavo Leinonen- 7 replies

Hi, I have Vista Ultimate 64-bit computer as a server for home network. The clients are mixed Vista (Ultimate) 64-bit and XP (Professional) 32-bit computers. After installing Vista SP1 the Vista server reliability has gone bad for XP clients. When I use one of the Vista server disk shares from XP client heavily, the connection does down and I get "Not enough server storage is available to process this command" and/or "System error 58" in the client side. Vista server event viewer shows these error messages soon after the problems: - The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty (system log / source sr…

Share and NTFS permissions - the right mix?!
by Guest Richard Price- 17 replies

Hi, After thinking I had it all nice and sorted, a user goes and does something which completely invalidated my prior belief. My setup is thus: Windows 2003 R2 server hosting network share \\domain\Users\ Under \\domain\Users are a load of directories - richard, martin, jenny, sam et al. They are users private folders, each mapped to desktop drive U:\ for the various users when they log into their desktops. What I want to accomplish is thus: Users can see all directories in \\domain\Users, but they cannot see the contents of those directories, delete those directories or add new directories. Users have full control within their own directory un…

Setting my PDC Emulator to time sync to external time source
by Guest aja44- 1 reply

Hi all, I have a couple of servers and a few hundered computers in my school. I have a time sync as part of the users logon scripts that sync the time on their PC to the PDC Emulator FSMO box. All DC's are running Server 2003 with a couple of 2000 servers running applications. All the servers and PC's show the same time as my PDC Emulator. But when I go to http://www.time.gov/timezone.cgi?Eastern/d/-5/java for time I find that I am 3 minutes off. I would like to sync my PDC Emulator DC to an outside time source. Can some help me out doing this. I found a kb article that has a series of registry settings but reference peers which I did not underst…

Is there a domain controller update for windows server 2003 r2 standard edition that helps with slow boot up process. It takes up to 8 minutes to get to the login screen. Sometimes it just gets stuck on preparing network connections and you have to hold down the power button to power off the server and then it will boot up in 8 minutes usually the second time

I have a goup of accounts that I created a separate OU for and set the group policy so that they couldn't access the internet and it worked. My problem now is that I need to to be able to get to the internet or at least a couple web sites. I went in and unchecked enforced and ran gpupdate and it had no effect. Still cant get to the internet on those computers. So I created a whole new OU with no group policy and moved them over and still no internet. Can someone give me an idea what I missed? Thanks, Chris

shutdown.exe does not shut down Oracle service cleanly
by Guest Yong Huang- 0 replies

On an Oracle list, we discovered that GUI shutdown (Start -> Shutdown) of the computer correctly runs the group policy shutdown scripts including "net stop oracleservice". But the command shutdown.exe does not run it, or does not run it completely, which in Oracle's term crashes the Oracle instance. Details are in the thread "Auto shutdown of Oracle for Windows reboot". http://www.freelists.org/archives/oracle-l/05-2008/threads.html#00263 Is there a way to let shutdown.exe behave exactly the same as GUI shutdown? How can I find the difference? I can't watch files or registry keys accessed with filemon or regmon because these programs are immediately close…

Recycle bin gone?
by Guest JB- 1 reply

OK - this is crazy - on Server 2003 I cannot get the recycle bin on the desktop. I have checked all group polices - both local and domain - and changed the possible setting to not configured.....still no recycle bin. The former administrator says he "didn't do anything" that may have caused that. Any ideas?

looking for event log monitoring
by Guest bruce- 0 replies

I have a utility I use to gather event logs. However, it only works on the pre-defined sources -- Application, System, DNS, etc. We are running Enterprise Vault from symantec, and it defines it's own "Enterprise Vault" event source. These events do not appear in the App log. I'm trying to find something that will handle 3rd party apps in the Event viewer. TIA
