User Can't Log On
by Guest kelmel- 2 replies

We have a Windows 2003 AD network and Windows XP SP2 workstations. I have set up a user for a special program and this user has worked fine for several years. Without any explanation, this user is now logging on to random machines only at this particular site. One machine logs on fine and the next two won’t work. As soon as you log on as the user, the machine hangs at “loading your personal settings”. We have deleted the user and profile folder on the local machine, and then re-added the user. We have started the machine in safe-mode with networking and also tried a system restore. We have even changed cables and switches, just to make sure it is …

UNC Path to local host
by Guest E-Double- 4 replies

Is there some general way to make a UNC path point to the local host - like the localhost entry does for URL paths? Ideally a batch file would be created that could be used on any machine but that would point to that local machine at the beginning of the path to run some scripts - i.e. \\localhost\program files\. For some reason this is not working with a universal way to point to the local machine. Using C:\program files is not an option for this particular script, and editing each batch file to point to each specific machine by its Netbios name would work but is not an attractive option given the # of machines. TIA for any help on this one ...

Hi There all.... would be very grateful if someone could shed some light on my problem. I have a windows 2003 sbs with 2 nics. The 2nd Nic has the direct connection to my router for internet access. I have a need to access a remote web site. This will work for a few hours and then all of a sudden it fails. If I wait for a few hours I again have accesss to this. If however i connect a laptop directly into the router bypassing the server then I can still access the site no problem. Therefore it must be a server issus somewhere????? any ideas... Thanks in advance.. Neil

strange permissions error on share
by Guest Brian Z- 1 reply
I cannot run exe files directly from the server. When running them from the share (\\server\share\file.exe), I get a permissions error that reads "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." It does run however when I execute it from explorer using the drive (D:\folder\file.exe), or using the unc path from another computer. I am logging in as the domain admin. All users have full share permissions. What could be causing this? Thanks for any help, Brian

Using browser to access server filestore - how to setup?
by Guest Mike- 1 reply
I have seen in some organizations the ability to browse a windows server filestore from ones browser. The benefit is that it becomes easy for people to browse to a file location, and copy the link e.g. intranet.mycompany.com/customers/proposal.doc and include the link in an email / document, rather than the actual document (Also, individual drives are mapped to drive letters in explorer, so it isn't easy or practical for them to send paths from explorer). I have asked my IT group about doing this and they looked fairly blank at how to do this. Can anyone describe in general terms what I need to do to get a Wiki server (or other Web server) set…

What's a best practice for creating a password that can be used to approve things at the admin password prompt for users on Vista Business machines connected to 2003 AD Server? For example, a user needs to install something that is acceptable to me. I have to walk over to their machine and type in the admistrator password. I can type in a server domain password or the password for the local admin account on their machine. What's better? What's a good best practice? I don't want to type an important domain password while people are watching. So is there a way to create some limited access domain account on the server that will only work for these …

Limitation in Storage Report

Hi. On our fileservers we have Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition SP2. In “File server resource manager” we would like to run a storage report. We are interested in the report “Files by File Group” and more specific we have selected the file group “Executable Files”. We have tested different report formats but regardless of format the report are limited to the top 100 files. The exact message is: “More than the maximum number of files per group matched the report criteria. Only the top 100 files are shown in the following file groups: Executable Files.” We don’t won’t this limitation but can’t find where the settings are that control this. Any i…

Windows Share Access Issue
by Guest steveosit@gmail.com- 3 replies

Hi, I have a folder shared on a server that gives DOMAIN\GroupA "Full Control". Nine members of GroupA have no problem accessing the share, but one member keeps getting Access Denied. I've double-checked group membership, everything things to be in order. If this user logs in at a *different* computer and tries to connect to the share, they are successful. So, it seems that there's something local to their computer that's causing the issue...but I don't have a clue what it could be. Unfortunately, a restart did not resolve the issue. Any ideas? Thanks, Steve

64 bit print server...
by Guest John Whites- 1 reply

has anyone ever set up a 64 bit print server? I wanted to make my windows server 2003 x64 r2 into a print server but it seems to be a bad idea because I can't get anything to work properly... Not all printers have x64 drivers, so what do you do? Try to use the x86? Doesn't work. Try to use just generic and then specific the x86 drivers? Doesn't work....always says they're not the right drivers.... Guess i'll just reinstall with 32 bit.

Remote Web Workplace & Microsoft Server 2003
by Guest msinca@gmail.com- 1 reply

Hello all. I have a quick question. Last year, my company migrated upward from Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 to Microsoft Server 2003 for various reasons. The only thing that we really miss is the nice little Remote Web Workplace functionality that came part of the SBS package. We used it extensively for users in the field to be able to easily remote back to their workstations in the office. I know that I could turn on Remote Access on each workstation and do some router mapping of various ports back to their individual machines. However, the SBS Remote Web Workplace handled this with ease without having to jump through all these routing hoops…

open file - Security Warning
by Guest dfranklin88- 0 replies

Greetings, We recently installed IE7 across our Windows 2003 Terminal servers and PC's. One of our critical apps which runs from a network shortcut now displays an "open file - Security Warning" before it can be run. We have run into this before and usually add the location of the share to local Intranet trusted sights. However in this instance it does not appear that we can use that method to remove the warning message. I have tried: Local Intranet - Sites - deselect "auto detect Intranet network" and other combinations of options in this area. None of which make a difference. I have found that: using this commad works "cd %userprofile%\desktop, …

So I keep getting this error in my event log, and I'm trying to get rid of it. I don't see any services in the service.msc that aren't started that should be, and all I keep getting is the following message: Source: Service Control Manager Event ID: 7000 The NDIS Proxy service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. I checked eventid.net and there isn't anything that applies. Any ideas?

Junction.exe question
by Guest dusty- 5 replies

I'm working in a student lab enviroment with 55 windows xp professional workstations, which are members of a domain. For the spring semester, I need to setup myitlab, a pearson product, and the instructions I received call for creating a junction point to redirect a folder to all users that logon. The instructions say to change the logon script group policy for the machines in the lab to include the junction statement. A command line example would be: \\server\share\junction.exe “c:\ Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\ TAIT3” “c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TAIT3” I downloaded junction from microsoft and read add…

Different resizing behaviour on 120 dpi screen
by Guest Jack- 0 replies

Hello, I am testing my app look and resizing. When testing it on 120 dpi screen the behaviour is as follows: 1. dragging the bottom right corner diagonally upwards or down it moves window outline only and when mouse is released the form fills the outline. In 96 dpi there is not outline but all form borders resize with the mouse movement. It is not my app only behaviour but all other programs behaviour the same way. I believe it is a video driver issue. But 2. 120 dpi: when dragging mouse fast and on the longer distance it causes the resized form being not resized proportionally, but doing it slower and in smaller steps resize is proportiona…

Open Files show wrong user information in Computer Management
by Guest Nancy R- 1 reply

Hi Folks, Here's a strange one that we are having trouble figuring out. What happens is that sometimes our file server will show the wrong username for the person accessing a file. *USER1 opens an excel file from a network share. They make some changes and close the file. It is a large file and can take several minutes to close. *USER2 tries to open the file but gets a message it is Read Only. They call IT. *IT checks to see who has the file open so they can tell them to close it. *In Computer Manager on the file server, under Open Files, it shows USER3 as having the file open. USER3, while they have access to the file, has not opened it before a…

Does anyone have any experience with sharing printers via a DFS target in Windows Server 2003 Standard R2 SP2? I know that the printer management was added and created some functionality, but I am not finding any resources for sharing printers in DFS. I have several sites, and I would like to create a namespace (\\ {domain}\Printers\{site name}) where everone can go to find printers withou having to UNC to their server. Any tips on the subject? Thanks!

Strange IP Address Behavior
by Guest razor- 7 replies

Hello-- We run a W2003 environment and host our own websites on an IIS server within our subnet. Our web developers use different internal IP addresses in their web page host headers and the corresponding IP addresses are statically configured into the IIS server's TCP/IP properties of it's NIC card. It seems all of a sudden, the NIC card started with the bouncing yellow ball and states it is acquiring a network address. But, it has a static address already in it. I have flushed DNS, rebooted, etc, etc. Everything works fine, but when I look at the support tab on the NIC properties, it shows all zeros for the addresses. Again, everything works…
