I need to start my site problem over. I help adminster a Win2003 domain in a hospital. Recently we installed 10 workstations in a subclinic 60 miles away. The clinic connects to the hospital with a T1 direct WAN link. The tech who set this up, now gone, placed a router at the subclinic and the router routes to the hospital for one network and the default gateway is to another router connecting to the Internet. The network at the clinic is. of course, different from the network the hospital uses. In the past I had very bad experience regarding data restoration from NTbackup Full system backup file. I am using Windows 2k3 & 2K server both. I am using Dell power edge 6600, 6650 &1850 servers. When the server OS crashes I used to do following steps 1. First I install OS. 2. Install service pack same as old O/S has & all security patches. 3. After that restore full backup from tape But after completion of this when I restore full backup of server through Ntbackup Some times server restarts again & again continuously or sometime few of the services or application of servers not runs properly. I created an account that has limited access to AD for remote administrator of a remote DC. That remote administrator needs to have admin rights to that DC, but I don't want him to have any rights to my other DCs. How do I give them local admin rights without giving him rights to my other DCs? thanks -- dee

Hi, I have had to rebuild the DC and have used the same machine and domain names. I have a few client machines (vista) that log onto the domain. Is there an easy way to re-connect these machine into the domain without having the client (vista) recreate the user accounts. (ie where the vista machine seems to create a new user firstname.001) THanks

win2k3 sbs. Printing worked fine until reboot yesterday. On the server console: When I print from application/test page, everything works fine. When I try "dir > \\servername\printername" I get an error "The parameter is incorrect." I tried "print /d:\\servername\printername c:\testfile" and get "Unable to initialize device \\servername\printername" I try from a client PC, works fine. It's like the server isn't allowed to print, but clients are. How can I test/fix...what parameters could be incorrect?

Start Windows Installer Service in debug mode
by Guest KDawg44- 1 reply

Hi, I am getting an errror in the event log, event ID 11708: Product Symantec Backup Exec for Windows Servers -- Installation failed. To make sure it isn't the windows installer service, I successfully installed and uninstalled another application. However, I cannot figure out what is causing this error, and since this is run from within Symantec Backup Exec, I am not sure which installer is trying to run. Is there a way to add an option to the Windows Installer service like - debug to set the service in debug mode, attempt the install, and then retrieve to log to find out why this is occurring? Thanks. Kevin

Hi there, I'd be really grateful if someone could have a quick read of my problem! My Exchange server is causing problems. 2-3 times a day, all outgoing emails are bouncing with SMTP errors - Example: There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator. <exchange.xxxx.local #5.5.0 smtp;550 <emailaddress@gmail.com>... Relaying denied> I am on a BT Business ADSL line and using a standard BT SMTP server which has always worked fine. I've checked at BT and it's working fine too. Rebooting my Exchange server resolves the problem but only for a few hours. Incidentall…

I'm in the process of writing an FTP script in SQL but while I am doing this I am testing my commands directly in the Command Prompt. When I attempt to run an mput or put command for my file I get a FTP Error: 501 Specified Object Name Too Long, limit is 10 Characters. Does anyone know how can I FTP files that have a file name of more than 10 characters? These files are 12 characters long and I don't have any way around that. TIA!

SharePoint v2 Issue - Edit in Microsoft Office Word
by Guest Michael- 0 replies
Just recently, within our SharePoint (v2) Document Library, multiple idividuals are reported issues for when they click on the document name drop down menu and choose "Edit in Microsoft Office Word". Expected behavior is for the document to open up within MS Word 2003. Now, MS Word does not open when "Edit in Microsoft Office Word" is chosen. The work around is to start MS Word (winword.exe) first, then the document opens as expected. Or, they can simply double-click on the link to the document, and MS Word opens the document (The only problem with this double-click method is that is misinforms you that the document is Read-Only which confuses the …

Microsoft Certificate Services Questions
by Guest admintgal- 0 replies
We are thinking about bringing up a CA within our organization and I had a few questions about Microsoft's CA services.... I noticed you can configure standalone or enterprise CA's. What are the advantages of integrating your CA in to AD? When using MS CA services what happens if the CA server goes down? Is there some link between the certs and the server in which they don't work if that server is down or is it just that certs cannot be created, requested or issued? Thanks in advance.

resource kit woes

Hi, A few months ago I installed the Windows 2003 resource kit tools on my server. At first I did not see any adverse effect but today I found out it did do one thing, very sneaky. ;-( I use the unix sleep command in several of my batchfiles to space commands in time. The original syntax for the sleep command is: "sleep <n>" where n is the number of seconds For at least a very long time, many years at least, the following syntax has also been valid sleep <n>s (to indicate n seconds) sleep <n>m (to indicate n minutes) sleep <n>h (to indicate n hours) and even sleep <n>d (to indicate n days) Unfortunatly the sleep comman…

Hi All We have Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Windows Server 2003. I'm having trouble sending outgoing email; it ends up getting stuck in the SMTP queue. When I reboot the Exchange server, the message is sent, but if I don't reboot, the outbound email is never sent. The domain name system (DNS) is good and I've set up authentication, connection, relay, outbound security and advanced delivery. I am at a total loss as to what the problem could be? Cheers

I try to use a point and print process with a Windows 2008 server x64 to a Windows Vista 32. So first I need to install the x64 driver and then install the x86 driver. The x64 driver is installed without problem. But when we try to install the x86 driver (I try by using different methods, using \\PrintServerName\Printers, Printer management on server 2008...) At each time, when I try to install the PS printer x86 driver an error message saying "Unable to install PS3 type 3 User Mode, x86 driver. This opération is not supported" The PostScript driver is just an inf file + a PPD file. It seems that the driver used is the core x64 driver, and it's impossib…

by Guest bsdaemon- 0 replies

For a long time, around - 1 month we did incremental back-up using ntbackup utility. Few days ago it ask for another tape due to a space limit. We install new tape and it finish back-up normally. After that we use the second tape (set2) for another back-up - so it was deleted. Now we try to restore data from first tape. NTbackup try to list backups and ask for second tape. If we press cancel it eject tape so we can't restore data from first tape. :( How restore data only from this tape without the second one? Before this situation we use this device (i.e. back-up/restore) for four years without problems. -- bsdaemon ---------------------------------------…

New drive/volume problem on Server 2003
by Guest polastine- 6 replies

I'm running Server 2003 Std. SP2 (fully up to date). I had an 130GB IDE HDD (letter D:) that I replaced with a 1TB (that's terabyte) SATA drive. After hooking it up, it showed up as the G: drive, with space reported correctly. Then I used a tool called SelfImage (highly recommended BTW) to mirror the entire IDE disk on to the SATA one. When that was over, I went into the logical volume manager, deleted the old letter assignment (D:), the new drive's letter assignment (G:) and rebooted. When Windows came up again, I went into the volume manager and assigned the letter D: to the 1GB SATA volume. That went great, except that now Windows Explorer thinks …
