Help with understanding windows licensing

I am in the process of adding 3 new Windows 2003 servers to our network. 2 terminal servers and 1 Exchange 2003 server. We are on a Windows 2000 domain using Exchange 2000. I will be keeping the domain on Windows 2000 for now and upgrading Exchange to 2003. I have about 50 users. 32 of them will be using the terminal servers and everyone will be using exchange. The 32 users will be split up between the 2 terminal servers. So here is my understanding, please correct me if i'm wrong: I need 32 Terminal Server "per user" CALs. Now do I need 16 Windows 2003 "per user" CALs for EACH terminal server? Same thing with Exchange. I know I need 50 exchange CALs, but…

In a corporate computing environment we have two users, userA and userB. UserA has been using its laptop for a long time. He has access permission to \\servername\aaa and has made its content available offline. It works beautifully without problem. Now userA ( a He) bought a new laptop and gives its old one to userB (a She). UserA continues to access its \\servername\aaa folder and files and makes them available offline to him. UserB uses the old laptop under her own Domain user account UserB. She also has access permission to \\servername\bbb folder in the server and is also having a need to make its contents available offline. But when the syste…

group policy drive mapping
by Guest Kelly Armitage- 9 replies

I have a question that should be simple yet I always have issues mapping drives using group policy. I connect to server 2003, joining the domain on a windows xp pro pc. On the server I have group policy set on the OU which contains my user. Under windows settings / logon I have a simple script to map a drive. the drive maps yet disconnects eventually requiring me to log off and on to re-run the script. (or mapping the drive manually) and i cant understand why such a simple thing is such an issue for me. the script file is called logon.bat and the batch file looks like this NET USE z: \\server01\archives$ /PERSISTENT:yes can anyone make any sug…

Alternatives to Net Use
by Guest Smithers- 10 replies

I'm rewriting a small utility app that, amongst other tasks, copies files from the local machine to servers on the local network. The existing implementation executes a batch file that executes the "net use" command to map a drive to each destination server/share. The program then tests via "if (File.Exists())" to ensure that the mappings were successful. I'd like to find a better way to copy the files out to the servers... and eliminate the batch file and "net use" altogether if possible. Is there an easier way to map drive letters than via batch file and net use? Is there a way to copy files without mapping a drive letter at all? I'm developing thi…

Folder Inheritance and Rights Issue with Remote Users
by Guest amdgamer18@gmail.com- 4 replies

Hi, I am currently running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with SP2. I have a shared folder called FTP Files which is on the root of the C: drive. I have set the folder to be shared, and have added users and guests full control of the folder. I have also checked allow inheritable permissions on that folder. Therefore any newly created files or folders will get the permissions from FTP Files folder. This configuration works perfectly when I am locally on the server and create a folder or file. The permissions are set correctly. However, when I access the folder via another computer on my LAN (set as a mapped network drive) the permissions are not set whe…

Safest Way to Invoke Remote Script Synchronously
by Guest Will- 8 replies

What is the safest way to invoke a script remotely on a Windows host synchronously, and retrieving a return code to the caller at program termination? Because the target system is in a no man's land, I do not want to open up RPC port, and God forbid with have to involve the abomination that is DCOM. I want something extremely simple and special purpose, with good authentication features on the program server. What are my options? Commercial software is okay. -- Will

I'm getting some ethernet controller errors, that I'm hoping to able to fix quickly and easily. If both the above answers are no - I'll do some more research... -- Cindy

using a backup server
by Guest Phil Rushton- 5 replies

I have two identical servers a main and a backup. Both running 2003 sr2 and terminal services in a workgroup. User profiles and documents are all stored on the main server. I want to be able to synchronize the main server with the backup server so that all I have to do is unplug one and plug in the other so people can carry on working. What is the best practice for doing this? I tried using Backup and Restore but when I log onto the backup server it creates a second empty profile. I named the backup server identical to the first. -- Regards Philip A Rushton ICT Officer 029 2052 7187 http://www.age-concern-cardiff.org.uk Why not visit our onli…

Recommendations for Server Room KVM Switch?
by Guest Will- 8 replies
Does anyone have recommendations for server room KVM switches that can handle 16 or more Windows boxes at 1600x1200 resolution? The Belkin products for 16 ports are absolutely awful...constantly we have one or two servers that mysteriously stop being controlled by the switch and we have to reboot them. The list of names the Belkin shows on the screen for the systems mysteriously clears itself and you have to spend 10 minutes re establishing that list. This is happening on both older and newer generations of the Belkin product. I also don't want one of the many flimsy IP-based KVM solutions that make a 1600x1200 screen look like a jagged bitmap. …

Intel Server Manager uninstall
by Guest Anthony- 3 replies

Howdy, I'm running SBS2003, Service Pack 2 (NOT R2), and I've run into kind of a pesky problem. We recently installed Intel Server Manager 8.30, updated to 8.40, then uninstalled because it wasn't very useful in our environment. Unfortunately, something seems to have stuck around, as I now get a dialog box starting configuration of Intel Server Manager, which then fails about 5 seconds later with a dialog box about being unable to find the InstallHelper.dll. This happens whenever I make changes to the Windows configuration or install software/updates, so it's kind of annoying, as it repeats 10 or 11 times before giving up. In addition, our event log repor…

I know this might sound stupid but I am trying to understand the concept of why on a server they have mapped network printers but also they have the printers installed as shares. To me I would pick one or the other. They do not have a print server running so what would be the benefit? Can anyone shed some light on this for me ... Thanks
