Windows 2008 group policy questions for MSFT
by Guest Victor- 1 reply

Is it correct for me to say: Windows 2008 group policies will not be recongnized on a Windows XP client because these clients use adm files, not admx regardless of the forest / domain functional level. Can I have a Windows 2003 DC servicing XP clients (adm), and have a Windows 2008 DC servicing Vista (admx) clients within the same domain?

I am using Windows Server 2003 with Web Services and Cold Fusion 6.1 for to provide web hosting. I also have another server for Email. Over the last week, I have noticed increased bandwidth and SPAM, even with my service. After checking my Log Files, here is an example of what I found in the log files: 2008-02-11 21:13:05 W3SVC1706141536 33.132.70.213 GET /images/ header6.jpg - 80 - 84.48.194.10 Mozilla/5.0+(Windows;+U;+Windows+NT +5.1;+nb-NO;+rv:1.8.1.12)+Gecko/20080201+Firefox/2.0.0.12 http://www.cracked.com/forums/topic/29725/a-forum-game-if-you-laugh-you-lose-not-56k-friendly/20 http://www.domainname.org 200 0 0 7337 487 453 2008-02-11 21:16:48 W3SVC170614…

CA Server chain won't issue cert to Issuing CA
by Guest themoelman- 1 reply

setting up a 3 teired CA chain and getting this error when trying to get cert from SubCA to Issuing CA: Certificate not issued (denied) error constructing or publishing certificate. The certificate validity period will be shorter than the SubCA Certificate Template specifies, because the template validity period is longer than the maximum certificate validity period allowed by the CA. Consider renewing the CA certificate, reducing the template validity pereiod, or increasing the registry validity period. The re-issuing of cert isn't needed - I did that fine and still get error.

Windows 2003 server in workgroup event id 8009 in workgroup server

I am running Windows 2003 server in workgroup and have event id 8009 errors in event wiewer. I would like to know how to disable this server from trying to be a master browserv. I tried this HKLM\Sytem\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters. There are three settings: no (can not be a browser), yes (very detailed, basically this would be the favored child in a tie if it got that far, for example, if two WINNT Servers were equal as far as everything to that point goes, the one with this registry entry would win the tie, and auto (will act as browser if asked by Master Browser). NT Workstations have it set to NO and NT Servers have it set to YES by …

Account with permissions to reboot server
by Guest hemp- 3 replies

I need to have someone other than a network admin be able to log in (locally) and reboot the server(s). I'd rather create a new account so it can be shared with a few trusted employees, but I don't want them to be able to much more than rebooting. I know I can set the "log on to" to only allow the account to log on to the servers, but what are the minimum rights that the account would need to be able to log in and reboot. Or does anyone have any other recommendations? I would need this account to be able to log in to a few different servers too. Servers are Windows 2003 AD Thanks Hemp

I have some Mac clients that are saving files to a Windows 2003 server. Is seems like there is a limit on file names for them. Is there any way to work around this or is that a restriction to the service? It's on a NTFS partition. Brian

Determining When a Domain Account Was Last Used
by Guest Phil McNeill- 4 replies
I know how to determine the last time a W2K3 domain account was used to logon to the domain, but how would I go about determining the last time a domain account was used for a purpose other than an interactive logon? For example, to start a Windows service on a member server, or to run a scheduled task in the Windows Task Scheduler. Basically, I'm performing a cleanup of domain accounts and trying to determine what's actually being used and what's not being used. It's easy with user accounts, but a little more challenging with accounts that aren't used for interactive logons. We're in an environment with several domain controllers and many member ser…

I am trying to figure out why I have random users loose their shared drive properties. I have a drive letter assigned to my users (H) that is setup in the user profile. The drive is for their home location. Intermittently, the drive looses its proterpies (ie-instead of the user seeing his/her information, they see everyones.) What could cause this?

Two NICs
by Guest ratman and bobbin- 4 replies

Server config is a Terminal Server with an Exchange Server (both 2003). The IP config is using all fixed IP's with no DHCP at all, the internet connection is a static ip with RDP forwarded to the TS. The internet connection is ADSL but the user has purchased a 20mb cable connection with a view to improving communications performance and wants to have both connections active. NLB is not required. Can I just add the second nic, connect it to the cable router, and use a fixed IP on the same subnet as the ADSL router? ADSL router 192.168.1.1 Cable router 192.168.1.254 TS Server 192.168.1.5, gateway 192.168.1.1 on one nic and 192.168.1.253 gateway 192.168.1.…

Can someone please tell me what this mean.
by Guest Ivor van der Merwe- 0 replies

Can someone please tell me what this mean and give me tips on how to resolve it. It is an event log writeup. The kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server GBRPC6712$. The target name used was cifs/NP0017A4CE8677.gbr.ad.fremantlemedia.net. This indicates that the password used to encrypt the kerberos service ticket is different than that on the target server. Commonly, this is due to identically named machine accounts in the target realm (GBR.AD.FREMANTLEMEDIA.NET), and the client realm. Please contact your system administrator. Enable Incoming connections over IrDA.
by Guest George Valkov- 3 replies

I moved my home PC to a new case that has an Infra Red port. I connected it to the mainboard and set the BIOS to use IrDA mode instead of COM2. Then I made a temporary Windows XP installation, and from the Network Connections folder, Add new connection I enabled "Incoming connections" over IrDA. When a mobile phone with enabled Infra Red port gets in range, it is automatically detected by the computer and I can transfer files in both directions. So far so good, but my home PC has Windows 2003 server. I copied and installed the drivers from XP to the 2003 server: [built-in Infrared Device] netirsir.inf irclass.dll irmon.dll irprops.cpl irftp.exe ird…

domain logon script does not run
by Guest Onetoomany- 4 replies

Win XP MCE (configured as part of a domain, using one of the registry hacks) 2003 server When I log onto the MCE box, the logon script does not run. I can manually navigate to the folder "netlogon on *server*" and run logon.vbs, and my network drives are then mapped. However, this does not run automatically; I believe that I've configured the global profiles etc... on the server correctly. I think this is a client issue, not a server issue as the logon script runs on the server perfectly but not on the client. I've also tried cheating by putting a shortcut to the logon script in the startup folder, but it still does not run. However, I can run the l…

Backup exec issues
by Guest zayin- 1 reply

Hi all, I recently purchased backup exec and a dell powervault tape drive in an attempt to use these to backup my daily data, running windows 2003 x64. The software is installed in a dell poweredge 2950, and the tape drive is connected to this machine via a scsi connection, which dell automatically installs using their own drivers. My issue is. . I don't know how to access this drive. I thought I could perhaps see the drive under Disk Management, or Removable Software under Comp. Management, but it's not there.. And when I start up backup exec, the backup tape drive does not show either on Media or Devices. When I try to run a backup job and click on 'De…

Problem with Performance Monitor Alerts and "Run As" command
by Guest Daniel Clemow- 2 replies
I have encountered this problem on two servers, one Win2003 sp1, and the other SP2. I'm trying to create an alert for a low disk space condition, and have a script all configured, and an account for the "Run As" that is a member of "Performance Log Users" and "Performance Monitor Users", has log on locally permission, and can actually run the script without problems when logged on. When creating the Performance Alert and this user is put into Administrators group it runs ok, but that's not ideal. When taken out, the error below is created in the Application Event Log: Source: SysmonLog, Event ID: 2038 Unable to execute command '' for the Low Disk Space a…

Windows server 2003 randomly failing
by Guest dDan- 10 replies

I've scoured the web for information on this but with no errors reported in the event viewer I'm finding it a little difficult to know where to start. Basically, our Windows Server 2003 server seems to randomly stop responding correctly. By this, I mean users cant log on to the domain, access any shares etc. The server itself doesn't actually hang, in that I can still navigate around Windows, however it does appear to be very unresponsive (for example, if i click START, it might take 5 minutes or so to show up). The server and all clients also fail when updating group policy. Restarting the server fixes everything, but then it happens again a seemi…

Login Script - System error 85
by Guest Marc S- 7 replies

I am running a basic Login script in Sysvol to map a few mapped drives thru the Net use: \\server\folder /persistent:yes command. After the first logon, the next consecutive logons give me System error 85 has occurred. The local device is already in use. The mapped drive is there, but there is an error in the script. Is there a better way to re-map drives on each Logon?
