There is sparse information on this. I've even seen references to a Windows 2003 Appliance Edition but cannot find any definitive information. Does anyone here have experience with building Windows based appliances and can point me in some direction? I have an ISV customer who is looking to me for information... TIA, Kevin

Remove Server from Domain and Rejoin, Implications?
by Guest Karl Burrows- 10 replies

I have been advised by Citrix in order to repair an installation of their Presentation Server to remove this server from the domain and rejoin it to clear an error I am having with this installation. This is not the DC, but it is our primary file and print server. What are the implications of removing this server? Will I lose shares, user permissions, mapped network drives, etc? If not, is there a preferred way of doing this with the least loss of network settings? Thanks!

WDS - no network initialization on capture image only
by Guest Paul- 1 reply
Hi, I have a Dell Precision 390 desktop machine which has a on-board Broadcom 57xx network card. I have created a boot image from my Windows Vista Business DVD and put it on the WDS server. I can boot to this fine and the network card drivers load and the network initializes as expected. However, when I then create a Capture image from the boot image and attempt to boot from this, the network card does not initialize. I have to press Shift-F10 and run 'wpeutil initializenetwork'. Then the card comes up fine and I can carry on. Has anyone seen this strange behaviour before? I have tried injecting various drivers into the boot image to no avail. N…

Confused with User/Device License CALS
by Guest Alex- 2 replies
Hi. We are currently building a new system with 20 servers (2003 Std R2), 10 workstations (XP) and ~30 users. The servers and workstations will only be making use of Active Directory for authentication and file sharing, therefore we plan on buying 15 User/Device Cals, 10 for the Workstations and 5 for five servers which access other servers for file access. All servers will be configured with Per Seat Licensing Mode. I'm slightly confused what we then need to do with the licenses. Do we add them to the License snap-in on the DC's ? I've looked at the License snap-in and can see how to add a User/Device CALs but how does the system know whether to a…

Losing Static IP address
by Guest Kirrin Jones- 7 replies
Good Day board, Hope I can get a fix for this. I have a service that acts as my DC, DNS, DHCP, Exchange server. Now when I enter a static IP address into the NIC, during the course of the day if I should check back the properties of the NIC, its set to dynamic. This also happens if I restart the server, when it comes up it takes a very long time to give me the login window and when I do log in and check the NIC properties, they are set to dynamic. Needless to say all or most of the services fail until I enter the static IP address and then restart the services. Can anyone give me an idea why this is happening? Thanks.

Inherit Permissions
by Guest TLS- 1 reply

I have users (QA) that audit word documents. When they are auditing they (QA) move them from one folder to another to lock the file and keep the other users (Scientists) from making changes. They (QA() have always moved the file by right clicking and dragging it to the locked folder and selecting "move". They (QA) does that now and the file does not inherit the permissions of the locked folder, which makes it possible for the other users (SCientists) to make changes move or even delete the file. They (QA) have always done it this way and just recently noticed that the files are not inheriting the permissions.

by Guest Badger- 2 replies

Hello, Server 2003 SP2 IE6 SP2 Citrix PS4 MIMEsweeper for Web 5.0.5 running on Server 2000 SP4 We have recently installed Server 2003 SP2 from scratch, setup as TS, installed Citrix, and instaled all our apps. We use auto proxy detection (use wpad.dat file on our proxy server, and this works fine when logged on as administrator. When logged on as any other user, and try and access an Internet URL, IE sits there for ages trying, and eventually times out. Occasionally it would come up with "syntax error" in the title bar of IE. If you add that user to local admin group it still does not work. Tried deleting and recreating the users Windows profil…

SPN and SETSPN

I am currently in the process of implementing an application which uses SQL Server that is having trouble authenticating clients when set to Windows Authentication Mode. The vendors suggestion is to create a SPN for the IIS Web Serverwhich users are trying to authenticate to. Anyone have experience with this that could shed somelight on why this would be necessary?

apply GPO to end users, but not administrators
by Guest RossB- 2 replies
I have a GPO, the policies in this GPO should apply to end users, not administrators. The GPO has loopback processing: merge, and is intended to apply to all servers in a given container. On the GPO, security is set so that Authenticated Users have read & apply group policy permissions. I have set the administrative group I am in to have all permissions, except apply group policy is set to DENY. This is to prevent the policy being applied to administrators. The problem is, the GPO is still applying to the administrators group I am in, despite the DENY statement above. Am I doing something wrong?

Connection Manager Profile for x64 Systems - not built for this processor architecture! Hi, Uptil now we've been using Win XP 32-bit, and have been using CMAK to set up our VPN connection on employees computers. We've just decided to start rolling out WinXP 64-bit. I've done a test install, and most of our software runs OK, with the exception of our CMAK profile, which pops up with the following error when you run the install, 'This profile was not built for this processor architecture'. As we don't currently have any x64 servers, I have installed VMWare Server on one of the WinXP x64 systems, and then installed Windows 2003 x64 R2 in this VM. Afte…

Does anyone know how to solve problems regarding ntBackup on a Server2003? It seems that it is not possible to create even one backup. Event IDs like 8019 will popup everytime. Especially when I setup a backup schedule. The backup will start automatically but stops immediately showing event id 8019. I can only find information on the web for an exchange server with this problem. Thanks in advance.

Change DNS server Serial Number Format.
by Guest SuperPlay- 0 replies
Hi Folks I there a way to change the format of the serial number which a Microsoft DNS server uses from a number i.e 1 then 2 then 3 etc to datechange? This is the report is from Dnsstuff.Com WARNING: Your SOA serial number is: 39. That is OK, but the recommended format (per RFC1912 2.2) is YYYYMMDDnn, where 'nn' is the revision. For example, if you are making the 3rd change on 02 May 2006, you would use 2006050203. This number must be incremented every time you make a DNS change. Cheers

Mapped Drives

I have a Network with some 300 users. Ocassionally, a user( not always the same user) will try to access one of the mapped drives or print to a network printer and it will be unvailable. When you open "My Computer", all the mapped drives will have a Red "X" over them. The only way to get them back is to synchronize them. Can anyone tell me what is causing this and how to fix it? Thanks in advance, Mike

I have been connecting to 4 servers without fail for some time. In the past 2 weeks when I connect to a Windows 2003 SBS system the login is fine and the windows are drawn fine. When I move the mouse or click something it appears to freeze for about 5 seconds, then carries on with the operation for about 10 more seconds then freezes again. It appears as though its running on a 28.8kbps modem when using the mouse, but keyboard is fine. But, If I use only the keyboard to navigate round the windows it never freezes, but as soon as I move the most, it freezes again. * The server is running fine, with no errors or current issues. * If I open a webpage with a…
