S2003 auto-reboot failing to complete.

Server 2003 R2. Headless, with server in cabinet, remote managed. As its DST today, went round the servers remotely to check the time had updated correctly. This one server decided to bug-out drastically the moment I remotely connected to it. Surprising, as it's never given a single bluescreen in its 4-6 weeks since being built. I strongly suspect a connection with the time change, but that's another matter. Anyway, the real issue was that after the automatic reboot, I couldn't get back into it. Had to abandon my Sunday morning plans, drive to site, get the thing out of the cabinet and attach a screen/mouse to see what was 'up' with the thing. …

W2K3 Web Edition SP2; Network fails until first login
by Guest Michael Gunther- 0 replies

I'm running W2K3 Web Edition w/ SP2. When I reboot my server, sometimes when it boots up, the network is unavailable until I first login. Along with the network being unavailable, all network services, such as web service, are unavailable as well. This does not happen on every reboot but does happen often. I am running this server on VMware Server ver. 1.0.4. I have run Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition servers on VMware and I have not run into this problem before. So, I don't believe the problem lies with VMware, unless it is something to do with Web Edition in particular. I have made three copies of this virtual machine in order to test th…

Hi. Some time ago I tested W2k3's File services for Macintosh, but decided to not use it and uninstalled it. I didn't know that my testing had some undesirable effects on files. If I copy a file from the server to a FAT device, I'm asked to "Confirm Stream Loss", the box states that "Information that might be lost includes: Macintosh Application info". This information is probably hidden in alternate NTFS streams. I know I could copy all those files (too many) to a FAT device and then back to the source. I could also get all the attributes, dates and owner information and put those in place too, but it would be quite a lot of work. Any ideas to get rid …

SBS2003 Network issue?
by Guest ratman and bobbin- 9 replies

Hopefully this is the right group. Quite suddenly in the middle of this week, all users started reporting difficulties accessing the Internet (404 errors) and additionally could not access a unix server application. Then their Exchange sessions started dropping out and then reconnecting at frequent intervals, synchronisation of folders became intermittent too. browstat shows the server as the master browser and I can find no errors anywhere, although it will pick up the unix server any attempt to browse it via Explorer results in an access denied error. This smells like a DNS issue (just a hunch) but the config looks ok. Now staring at a complete rebu…

Domain setup

Hi All - more questions about Domains vs. Workgroups My husband plans to purchase a server-based database application for his business. He currently has 6 users, each with XP Pro. They are set up as a "Workgroup" and aren't sharing any resources except printers. His router handles DNS & DHCP. In addition to sharing the database application on-site, he also wants his users to be able to acess this database application remotely, which means, I presume, some kind of VPN solution and maybe Terminal Services. He has already purchased a server with Windows 2003 Server Standard - being shipped as I write. It has 4GB of RAM and a RAID5 disk array. I app…

Does DFS break when I move a server?
by Guest Ray- 0 replies

Morning All, I currently have two domains OLD and NEW and I’m in the process of migrating servers to NEW. I have a DFS structure setup in the NEW domain and the shares are pointing to a system in the OLD domain. My question is: If I move the file server in the OLD domain into the NEW domain (simply changing the domain association using the computer name tab) will the DFS pointers break? (DFS is currently using the UNC of the file server). Thanks in advance.

Windows 2003 Net Time
by Guest vmtraver- 0 replies

I recently upgraded from a windows 2000 to a 2003 one forest one domain, domain and have 8 sites. Four US sites and four overseas sites. I found out by accident that if I do a net time command from a client at any site it returns the time from our Bangkok (non PDC emulator) domain controller. If the Bangkok domain controller is unavailable it hits the next domain controller in alphabetical order. I have the PDC emulator pointed to two internal time sync appliances on our network by ip address separated by a space. After replacing a leased domain controller, I noticed the default installation of a domain controller creates a registry setting for the ntpserver unde…

Mapping printers to particular machines
by Guest Laphan- 2 replies

Hi All Hope you can help. Basically I need to map a printer to certain PCs so that all the PCs on the first floor have the ability to print to one printer and all the PCs on ground level can print to another. To do this, I tried the following: a) Created a new OU in AD called 'Upstairs PCs'. b) Drag and dropped one particular PC from the default Computers folder to my new OU. c) Went into GPO editor and created a new GPO for this OU called 'Upstairs PCs'. d) Went to User Config > Windows Comp > Logon and dropped in a script file that uses the usual printdll command line to map the upstairs printer. However when I log onto the relevant…

Hello, In the Application Event Log, I have daily Certificate Enrollment Failures appearing on 5 of our Domain Controllers. From what i understand, this started when our OWA Server was put into production using a self-signed certificate. I have researched this pretty heavily and was told that there is some sort of process to resolve the errors but im not able to locate anything specific. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Type: Error Source: AutoEnrollment Event ID: 13 Event Time: 3/5/2008 1:28:56 PM User: n/a Computer: COP Description: Automatic certificate enrollment for local system failed to enroll for one Domain Controller certifi…

Remove Windows 2008 member server from domain
by Guest Lars Zeb- 1 reply

I am switching 6 computers in an AD domain to a workgroup. I made a big mistake and knocked down the DC before removing a Windows 2008 member server which is used to run SQL Server 2005. When I attempt to change the Windows 2008 server from the domain to a workgroup, it launches a model window titled Windows Security. This window is asking for a username and password belonging to the domain for permission to remove this Windows 2008 server from the domain. Well, the domain no longer exists. Is there another way to remove the server from the domain? TIA

Moreover, when i double click on folders to open them or text files then again it is very slow. I have completely scanned the system with AVG and cannot find any virus. file security slow
by Guest John- 3 replies

I have a folder on the 2003R2 file server that when I change folder security settings takes a very long time. It seems much longer than other large folders. Is there a tool that I should use in this type of situation that can check for corruption...? Many files and folders in this folder have very long names and possibly characters that should not be used.... Is there a document that would give me ammunition to tell them to stop using certain characters or exceeding some length?

Event ID 1053
by Guest Tony- 6 replies

I have a new server (actually two identical servers) that are receiving an Event ID 1053 error message on boot. The error says: Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. ). Group Policy processing aborted. I can successfully run gpupdate /force from a command line. I also see in the log that policies are being successfully applied later. This seems to be only during boot. I've tried several things thinking that it might be trying to establish communication before the NIC team is ready. I have disabled another NIC on a different network (this machine is intended to…
