Hi all I have some sata cages installed in my w2k3 server to use for backups. What I need to do is create a couple of scripts that I can schedule to dismount and remount a drive. This way the staff can just swap the drives without worrying about logging on and stopping them as the card for the drives is not hot swap Can anyone point me in the right direction as I don't have a clue where to start Cheers Glenn

Hullo, today i tried to demote a Windows 2003 server BDC to a stand alone server or member server but, unfortunatelly, dcpromo command aborted its operations with an error. I tried also with dcpromo /forceremoval but i had same result. I would like to know if exist a manual procedure to demote it or an utility able to do it for me. I've set up WSUS, set the group policy settings, and select the updates i wanted to install. For some reason the updates are not installed at the specified time which i set to sunday at 3:00 AM. I know the server is set correctly in group policy since the computers report correctly to the wsus server. Any help on this would be appreciated.

GPO Problems

I am having problems with GPO's in general. Firstly i am having issues with gpupdate taking an age to fail - I have found fixes for this, i am waiting no microsoft sending me a hotfix but another problem i have found is: I have some GPo's which can only be applied for a group of either computer or uses. In the AD for Computer Users i can add to this group - no problems I then added this group as the only group that can access it in the GPO scope in the security filtering. once confirmed, i double click the group and i get 'the requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context' I know this is a IE7 issue, i have/had IE7 on my PC…

Need VPN Server Help....
by Guest Eric Miller- 2 replies

I have a (non-pro) virtual server as a Guest of my Win2003 R2 but my VPN server can't connect to the internet nor can I connect to it from my labtop or my host. I have two NIC's for VPN: 1) for the VPN using the Internal NIC, 2) connect to the VPN Server, should I be able to connect to the internet. Windows Firwall isn't active for this NIC, I'm using Active Armor from nVidia, but even when I disable it I still can't connect either way. I use the IP assigned to the NIC "192.168.0.100", I getting the Error 800.

.shd and .spl files
by Guest Joanne- 2 replies

I am not sure if I am in the right group. If not, please point me to the correct group and accept my apology for the intrusion. I am getting a report from WindowsServer2003 that there are some 90 .spl and .shd files not backing up. I would like to delete these files, but am getting a message that they are in use and cannot be deleted. Having search the internet, I do know that they are printer shadow and spooler files, but that is about all the info I could gather. Could someone please help me find the info on how to delete these? - or do they get deleted automatically after a certain time period? I do notice on my report that the number of these files does…

In order to correct a problem with Office 2007 and RPC over Http, I need to use setspn to deregister and reregister a SPN. My question is simple: Can I do this on the fly without affecting my Exchange server and users? Since I am unregistering and reregistering, I am concerned. Thanks -- Jim A.

Large Disk Layout, Best Practices
by Guest Brian McGrew- 0 replies

Good morning All! I've got a brand new server with a RAID 5 controller in it and 6x750GB drives. The box is going to run Win2K3 and be solely a data server and also host Services for Unix. What is the best way to lay out the hard drives and should I do it in hardware or software? Right now the hardware has all six drives in a single RAID 5 array totally up to about 3.75TB of space. I nstalled a copy of Win2K3 Enterprise but it only sees the first 1.75TB of space and the remaining 2TB is unusable and also, I can not covert it to a dynamic disk. Am I taking the totally the wrong approach to this or did I just do something wrong? Or, do I need to g…

Service Pack Question for DC's
by Guest Christian- 1 reply
Hi, I had posted this question earlier, but I'm not sure I got the answer to the core question I had asked. I have a single domain controller running right now at Windows Server 2003 SP1. I have a second server running at Windows Server 2003 SP2 that is ready to be promoted. What issues/problems may show up if I promote this server running SP2 while the other server is still at SP1? Is it best practice to apply SP2 to the first server before promoting the second? Or, should I downgrade the second server to SP1 and then run DCPROMO? Thank you for your time, -Chris

Optical fiber (O.T.?)
by Guest rosgiof@hotmail.it- 4 replies

Hi all. I'm very sorry for the O.T., but I really don't know where to post my question. Is it a good idea to connect two ethernet 100Mbits LANs of two separated buidings (distance about 60 meters) with an underground optical fiber cable connected to 2 switches (1 each building) each with a fiber-module ? I mean, is it safe for the risk of lightnings, electric potential differences between buildings and other electric or electic-magnetic problems that could fry or damage my LANs ? Thanks a lot for the help, and excuse me for my bad english.... Bye bye, Rosgiof.

I have IIS 6.0 running ASP.NET 2.0 and Framework 2.0. (Windows 2003 Server SP2) Server is located behind the firewall. (i.e. 10.0.0.10) Router is 10.0.0.1 Port forward has been set to forward port 80 of 10.0.0.10 to 10.0.0.1 when requested. I have tried other port addresses such as 8080, 8888, 7780,7743 ... etc... but it hasnt work with IIS 6.0/MS Win 2003 Server. I have other webserver running under linux which i use port forward (i.e. port 8080, 8888, 7780, 7743) and works well. I can only narrow it down to the Windows 2003 server. I do not run DNS on Windows 2003 server. (There is no need as mydomain.com provides a dns for my website) Fr…

Hello everybody I'm a newbie in Windows Server 2003 and don't know how to configure the following... I have a server connected to our domain (one the first NIC). Now I would like to configure this server to provide IP addresses to clients connected on the second NIC of the server. I already know how to configure DHCP so that IPs are only provided on the second NIC. My problem now... I don't receive IP addresses on the client. My goals are... - to reach that my server acts as a DHCP and PXE server for the clients connected on the second NIC - that the clients connected to the second NIC can access my domain resources (that means, that I have to c…

How to stop the ruddy screen rotation!
by Guest Laphan- 4 replies

Hi All Kids, bloody kids! Is there any option in GPO that will specifically stop users from rotating the XP screen other than normal? I currently set AD pupil accounts so that they can't right-click to bring up the context menu and do the rotation from here, but somehow the kids are getting past this and rotating the bloody screens. How are they doing it? I thought the right-click/graphic options/rotation method was the only way??? Thanks

WSUS 3.0
by Guest lir- 1 reply
Hi everyone, I have just installed WSUS 3.0 in an stand alone server. I configured the group policy for WSUS pointing to http://servername. The GPO is linked to two different OUs. One of them only have a Windows XP computer. The other has a Windows Server 2003. The Windows XP is not able to see the WSUS's policy. When I run a gpresult, the report only shows the Default Group Policy, not the WSUS policy like the Windows Server 2003 computer shows. So the policy is working, but not for XP client. What should I check? Thank in advanced Best regards
