Setup network printer with a laserjet 4 plus driver
by Guest shawn- 0 replies

Hello I have a laserjet 4200 printer on my windows server 2003 network and I have my users connect to it via the "add printer" wizard on their windows 2000 pro. PCs using the network printer configuration. The issue is in addition to the users adding this printer, they also need to add another printer running the wizard again based on this printer but utilize a laserjet 4 plus printer driver instead of a 4200 driver. Normally, the users don't have to worry about selecting a printer driver since this is automaticaly done for them when they add their printer via the printer wizard. How can my users add a network LJ4Plus printer via the printer wizard…

Admin Server 2003 myself? Or find someone to host?
by Guest chessaurus@gmail.com- 1 reply

I am part of a team that is developing a custom, high-volume ASP.NET application that will receive primarily local traffic (ie from my city). I have used hosted ASP.NET providers in the past (like Intermedia and ResellerChoice) and these have worked well for our earlier/smaller projects, but I'm worried about scalability for our upcoming larger project. These providers all geographically far away from my city (which seems inefficient) and share an individual SQL Server instance with many other customers (which lessens our ability to scale). I'm toying with the idea of buying a Dell with Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server, but I'm wondering how much work thi…

Backup Active Directory
by Guest rexracer_geno- 3 replies

I have a server with a very limited function. It servers as a standalone domain controller that services a SharePoint site. I want to backup AD in a minimal fashion, to be able to restore only the DC information on a new DC in the event of disaster. When I view the selections under system state, all the sub-selections are greyed out. Is this normal? I go ahead and do the System State backup with detailed log and it does list Active Directory as an object, but there is no confirmation in the log that AD was backed up. Also, if I go to Restore and select the system state backup, it shows a very old date for Active Directory. I find this odd - ac…

Hardware Requirements

I am installing a new server for a client. They will be running Server 2003 R2, Exchange 2007 and SQL Server 2005. They have 15 users for the server and Exchange and only have 10-users in SQL. I know Microsoft recommends a separate server for Exchange and SQL, but my Dell reps thinks it should run fine because of the small number of users. The specs on the server are a quad-core Xeon, 4GB of RAM, 2-76GB SCSI drives mirrored for the OS and a SCSI RAID 5 array for the data. Do you think we will have any problems running all the software on that box?? thanks.

Unable to start service on Win 2003
by Guest Chris Coates- 2 replies
I have an application installed on a Win 2003 server. The service has been running fine, but if the service stops, I have to reboot to get it started again. If I just try to restart the service I get a error 1073 "The specified service already exists" I know it exists, I installed it and have been using it. I am not trying to re-install the app, just restart the service. I have looked on line but everything I have found involves installing or re-installing a service, which I am not doing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Chris

What does 'R2' signify...
by Guest v2win- 4 replies

What does the 'R2' designation mean for certain MS products? For example, Windows Server 2003, Virtual Server 2005, etc. have alternate versions with the same name except with R2 appended (e.g., Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2). What is the difference between the R2 and non-R2 designated products? Thx -- V2

Well, today i applied the KB943485 patch to my SBS 2003 and Standard 2003 server in my domain.... I rebooted and bang... using the administrator (builtin) account would refuse to log in. The error was.... Local Security Policy won't permit interactive login This account would log - in fine before the patch's were applied. I applied KB941644 and KB943485 and I believe that the 485 was the one that changed security settings. I looked in the Domain Controller Security settings and the Administrator account is set to allow local login and it is not denied interactive login in any of the policy groupings.... I could log in using a normal user a…

I have Windows 2000 server running as a virtual machine and device manager is showing the computer device running ACPI Multiprocessor and everything works fine. A nearly identical Windows 2000 server is running in identical virtual machine but device manager is showing the computer device running MPS Uniprocessor. Any time I attempt to upgrade the device driver to run ACPI, the system blue screens on the next reboot. What is the trick to convert from MPS to ACPI assuming you are starting off with Windows 2000 running MPS? -- Will

Which BackUp Software
by Guest allanc- 4 replies
We are running a small network (2 users) on a Windows 2003 Server with SQL Server 2005. We have not installed Exchange. We can schedule a backup with no users on the network. Our concern right now is to be able to create a complete backup that is relatively easy to restore to the same server. In other words, a complete image. Are there advantages to using a third party commercial backup as opposed to NTBackup? Thank you in advance.

HOW TO SEARCH FOR FILES ON WINDOWS 2008
by Guest JJ Jones- 2 replies
Hello out there, I am running Windows 2008 Server. Microsoft has apparently changed the simple SEARCH utility that hangs off of the START button in XP. In other words, in XP you click on START, then click on SEARCH, then FOR FILES OR FOLDERS. Simple as pie. Unfortunately, somebody has apparently come up with a "better idea" in Windows 2008 because SEARCH isn't there anymore, and I can't figure out where they put it. I can't find anything in the documentation. Does anybody know where Microsoft hid the SEARCH function? Please help, since it is driving me stark, raving, mad. Thanks,

Win2k3/IIS6.0/Exchange2003

I'm not sure if I'm in the correct place for this question. Anyway, I have a win2k3 SP2 machine as a PDC with IIS6.0 insatlled (not sure if that is too secure). On another win2k3 SP2 (not a DC), I have Exchange 2003. I have performed domain and forest prep. On the PDC, when I try to install FrontPage server extensions on IIS6.0, it will not do it. Any suggestions? -- NuBee

On a Windows 2003 server, I cannot use the Help service. When I try to use it, I receive an error message telling me that the Help and Support service is not running and that I should start it from the services applet. The problem is that there is no "Help and Support" service visible in the services console screen. Does anyone know what is going on? Thanks.

WinRM installation and IIS
by Guest TripleSticks- 1 reply

This may not be the appropriate forum for this question, so if it isn't I apologize ahead of time. Any help in what forum it belongs in would be appreciated. We have been prototyping an application with WinRM and have been very happy with it's capabilities. However, it seems to require IIS be running on the Windows 2003 Server that you are attempting to manage. After re-reading the System Requirements on the download page and looking through the MS WinRM information I see no mention of this anywhere. However, if you look at the WinRM service it clearly has a dependency on the IIS Admin Service. We are trying to manage member servers that don't have…

unable to register a dll - "access is denied"
by Guest everymn@yahoo.com- 2 replies

Hi, I'm trying to register an ActiveX dll on a remote Windows Server 2003 Enterprise 32 Bit system using Remote Desktop. I've tried both regsrv32, and Reggie.exe to do this, and both give me the same error: regsvr.exe LoadLibrary("c:\WINDOWS\system32...")failed - Access is denied reggie.exe HRESULT == 0X80070005 Access is denied I'm logged on as a user that is a member of the administrators group that has full permissions to the dll itself. I checked the local security settings and I don't see anything in there that would seem to apply to this condition. The Remote Registry Service is running and I am able to make manual changes to the registry usi…
