Stop user logout
by Guest Flick Olmsford- 2 replies

We have users who, though group policy, have their login restricted from Internet Access using a bogus proxy server IP address. The users though know of another login they can use that requires access to the internet. The users are logging in, doing a minimal part their assignments, and then logging out and back in with the Internet required login, the username and pwd of which is required to be publically available. Can I stop these users from logging out once they login using their internet restricted logins and if so, how. Even stopping them from logging out during the next couple hours will do. The users can lock their screens when they need…

Add dotted name in dns forward zone
by Guest Jake- 2 replies

Hi, In a w2003 domain (mydomain.lan) we have a linux intranett server we want users to access by entering intranet.lan. I opened DNS / Forward Lookup Zones / Mydomain.lan, selected New Host (A) and entered intranet.lan and its IP address in the record. I noticed that a new folder named lan was created under Mydomain.lan and it contained the host entry intranet with corresponding IP address. However it does not resolve. If we enter a non-dotted name it resolves nicely. What do we need to do to have a dotted name like this resolve via a win dns server? thanks for suggestions Jake

Process (inetinfo.exe) Alert
by Guest intrass- 0 replies

'The inetinfo.exe process is allocating more memory than usual. The following services are hosted by this process: IISAdmin, POP3SVC, RESVC, and SMTPSVC.' What does this mean? I recently doubled the actual memory. Do I need to reset an alert threshhold somewhere, or is this unauthorized usage or something else? Thanks -- Ron

Cannot telnet to Exchange 2003
by Guest COB- 0 replies

I setup HP Insight manager on a server. I set all of the snmp traps on the other 5 servers to point to this server so it can log the details. BUT I cant figure out how to establish the Alert manager. I have narrowed the problem to the fact that i cannot telnet from server 1 to Exchange2003server. It fails as it does from the other Win2k3 servers. Is there a specific setting or permission on the Exchange server OR the regular W2K3 servers that I am missing?

WDS configuration error after risetup
by Guest mu1980- 0 replies
I have an external hard drive plugged into our WDS server, formatted NTFS, and the risetup process worked flawlessly, copying all the info from the XP cd. Now, when I want to configure WDS, I get a "the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect" error when I click Next on the Remote Installation Folder section of configuring WDS. It correctly lists the drive letter and path to the remote install folder created during risetup. I can access the drive, etc. from outside of WDS config, but the program seems to have a problem with it. What's up with this? Any ideas? Thanks :)

Security Log Oddity
by Guest Daniel P. Cayea- 0 replies
I have several Windows 2K3 SP2 or 2K3 R2 servers as domain controllers throughout the organization. I have the security logs setup usually at 16 meg size and to overwrite the log as necessary. The problem that I have been having, and haven't found a solution or maybe out of obtuseness I am just missing it, is that when I log on to these domain controllers, I will get the "Security Log is Full" error message. So I go into Event Viewer to see the security log and it resets to 512kb with no overwrite. So I set it back to 16384 wth overwrite as necessary only to have the same issue come up. If I remember correctly there was a hotfix to deal with this, b…

question about dfs root
by Guest John W- 3 replies

another question... If I have a DFS Namespace set up say //mydomain/tech or //mydomain/shares/ with a folder created in the namespace say hs .....let me illustrate this as it would appear in DFS Management somewhat... Root: usd/shares Folder under root - Tech Folder under tech - Install - Targeted to another server. My question is, when someone creates something inside the "Tech" folder where is that actual file stored? On the namespace servers? If i'm using more than one server to host the namespace do those files get replicated?

Server 2003, Quickbooks, Client Desktop Memory Problem
by Guest Tommy Jordan- 0 replies

I may be starting in the wrong place, but trying to find the "right" place to post about server/desktop/quickbooks/progression issues in any one forum is just too broad, so here goes. I'll welcome advice, tips on where to look, solutions, etc. I'm running Server 2003 with Quickbooks Enterprise 7.0 AND McCullogh Progression accounting packages installed. (Why? We are replacing Progression with Quickbooks, but some older clients can't be ported to the new platform so we have to run BOTH for a year or so.) I have 12 client computers that connect to the server and pull the accounting databases across the network. Progression uses SQL, requiring the MSDE on the …

Primary NIC not being recognized
by Guest doris- 2 replies
Hi, I'm running Virtual Center 1.4.1 and the ESX host is at 2.5.5. My VM is built with a windows 2003 server OS and has two NICs. My binding order is set on these NICs but the VM is not recognizing the primary IP - it keeps defaulting to the second. I'm trying to figure out if this is a VM/win2003 issue or a win2003 issue. The same environment with windows 2000 works fine. Has anyone else encountered this? Thanks for any help

monitoring file server usage
by Guest Jim B- 0 replies

Is there any good way to see what impact any given user has on file server performance. My fileserver is getting far more utilization than I think it should and I suspect that it's due to 1 or 2 users but I'm not sure which 2. Is there a way to track disk time per file or per user?

RRAS Remote Access Policies filters keep coming back
by Guest ttripp- 0 replies
On my RRAS server, in the Remote Access Policies, there is a default policy, "Connections to Microsoft Routing and Remote Access server", which is policy #1. Under the "Edit Profile" button, on the IP tab, there are two IP filter buttons, one for Input Filters and another for Output Filters. Even though I did not set a filter, in the Input Filters settings, a filter with a source address and mask of "host" and a destination and mask of "any", keeps popping up, along with the setting to "Permit only the packets listed below". Now, this filter should not actually do anything (it should allow all traffic), but for some reason my VPN users can't access Exchange…

Managing Shadow Copy with group policies
by Guest Alessandro- 1 reply
Hello. I am looking for a way to manage the Shadow Copy client by group policies. For example, I'd like to disable (on XP clients) the 'Restore' button, leaving only 'Open' and 'Copy'. Because I don't want that a distract user overwrite a file with an older version. I have looked for similar options in the group policy but I haven't found them. Could someone help me please? Thank you. Alessandro

Polling and Reporting Servers with Uptime.exe
by Guest a_user- 3 replies
Hi All, I am wondering if there are any free applications or small utilities out there that will allow you to poll your servers and systems that have uptime.exe on them and list the uptime of these systems and maybe in a column beside the systems hostname? I could see a utility like this being valuable for a quick glimpse and report of system availability and I dont see this as being something to difficult to do for someone inclined with programming. Does anything like this exist without getting into Enterprise level monitoring applications? Thanks

Folder redirection
by Guest Fiammenghi Fabrizio- 1 reply

Hi, I enabled folder redirection on my domain. I used the group policy management to create the policy. The folders are created correctly on the share, but the problems is that all my collegues manage to enter on this shared folder see documents of other collegues. If in group policy i enable the "Grant the user exclusive rights to my documents" only the owner can access the redirected folder, and domain admins can't do that. Is there a way to let only the owner and domain admins access the redirected folder , like the settings for roaming profiles ? Many thanks in advance Fabrizio

PPTP stops working on Win2k SP4, any ideas why? netstat shows...
by Guest Default User- 2 replies
Hi, I've got a win2k SP4 server running routing and remote access configured for PPTP. It will work great for a week or two and then all of a sudden stop allowing remote connections. Netstat -a shows it is listening on port 1723, but I am unable to connect to it with the "telnet localhost 1723" command. Also, I noticed today that the ports area of the routing and remote access tool was missing all of the entries for PPTP when it was not working. Once I restart, they are come back, it accepts port 1723 connections, and all is well again. By the way, restarting the remote and remote access service does not fix the issue. I have to restart the …

Forest Trusts
by Guest Nicolas Macarez- 1 reply

Hi! I have two Windows 2003 servers : SERVER1 (W2K3 R2 SP2) and SERVER2 (W2K3 SP2). Each server is acting as a DC for its domain which is in its own forest : SERVER1 is DC for DOMAIN1; SERVER2 is a DC for DOMAIN2. Both servers are on the same LAN (no router, no firewall). The DNS on both servers are set up correctly, with a stub zone pointing to the other server. I established a two-way transitive trust between both forests, using the Active Directory Domains and Trusts snap-in. I chose the Forest Wide Authentication in both ways of the trusts. My purpose is to enable users from the domain DOMAIN2 to have their Exchange Server 2007 mailboxes hosted on…

NTFS Permissions Issue
by Guest Alan- 0 replies

Hello, I have an issue on my main file server. The structure starts at a root folder with the Administrator, System, and Creator Owner permissions applied and inheritance enabled. Each nested folder has a specific AD group created to control access, this group is given Modify permissions and inheritance is enabled at this level to this folder, subfolders and files. The other day someone was able to move one sub-level directory tree from one sub-level folder to another. To make things more interesting it was during month's end processing! I have successfully restricted the ability to perform this operation to everyone besides administrators. Howe…

Forest Trust Problem
by Guest Demerson- 0 replies
Heya, folks. I'm trying to configure a trust between two Windows 2003 forests. Basically 1.com trusts 2.loc The thing is when I configure the trusts, everything seems to work fine but only one side can see the objects of the other. 2.loc can see and grant permissions to users from 1.com, for example. But when I try to connect to 2.loc from a 1.com, the following message comes out: You can't connect to 2.loc domain because the times are skewed. I checked the times in both servers and it's the same! Any ideas? Thanks a lot!

windows security for remote access
by Guest dg2099@gmail.com- 0 replies

my company manages several domains that are unconnected by a LAN and are different legal entities. My department however is responsible for all these companies' PC and server management and we use RDP to get into them all. The problem is, short of creating unique domain admin user/passwords on each domain, i have no way of tightening security so i can A) know who logged in and when they disconnected or logged out B) when they leave my department, or the company, disable their access to all the domains with a few keystrokes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want them to have the access they need to do their job but need to be able to track who do…
