failure audit in security log
by Guest Andy- 0 replies
I am recieving a failure audit message in the security log with event id 537. The reason for the error message is 'an error occurred during logon', and it occurs when I run NTBackup. This is on a DC with a domain admin account. Further down the 'Logon Failure' it mentions 'Authentication Package: NTLM' and it notes the DC I am on as the workstation name. One irregularity is that the FQDN is over 15 characters and therefore when it mentions workstation name it is missing the last few letters. I have also noticed that I can ping the two names and recieve a reply. Anyone with any ideas how I get round this as the error message is preventing me from backi…

Basic volumes disappear after Hotfix updates and reboot
by Guest dirk2112- 5 replies
I have 45 basic volumes (logical drives with extended partitions and no drive letters) that are pointing to an EMC Clarion 700. Over the weekend some folks decided to install some hotfix/patches to my server. After the reboot, the system (disk manager) now only sees 10 of the 45 disks. I am at a loss as to how to find out what happened. Some folks think it is a permission problem related to security, but I don't even know where to look. Any help is appreciated! Mike

Primary Domain Controller Dead
by Guest Tommy- 1 reply

Hi Everyone I have 2 domain controllers setup in the business here and we have lost the disk on the primary domain controller. The secondary domain controller is up and running but now i have built a new domain controller it wont let me add the new domain controller to the domain indicating that the domain requires configuration. I know the issue is that the secondary domain controller is not the schema master. Has anyone promoted a domain controller to schema master before without the primary online. Thanks so much Tommy

Hello, where can I disable the automatical schutdown of the service WinHttpAutoProxySvc after 15 minutes inactivity. I need it several times a day and the restart of the service needs a too long time. At this time I start the service every 2 minutes with a batch-file, so it will start, when it was shutdown. But this is not a beautiful solution. Christian

by Guest Bo Berglund- 5 replies

I have a W2003 server that has a task set up to run every 10 minutes. This has worked well for a couple of years. But recently (about Dec 21st, 2007) it stopped working. When I open the scheduled task's properties I am greeted with a message box with the following contents: "General page initialization failed. The specific error is: 0x80090016: Keyset does not exist An error has occurred attempting to retrieve task account information. You may continue editing the task object, but will be unable to change the task account information." The W2003 server is a secondary domain controller on our network and I am a domain admin, so permissions should not be a p…

Can anyone help me please. For some strange reason my Windows 2003 server now does not detect any USB devices. I know it was working as I had usb pen drives and my printer connected.... The event viewer shows Event 257: Timed out sending notification of target device change to window of "WndClass_CWinDrivesNotifyerHelperWindow" Also notices that the registry had no USB key in HKLM > System > CurrentControlSet > Services It only started when I had troubles getting iTunes to detect a new Ipod Shuffle. Any ideas???? Cheers Paul.

Granting Execute Permission on Scheduled Tasks
by Guest Sanjay Pais- 2 replies
We have Windows 2003 servers that are locked down and we are unable to execute scheduled tasks in windows. Is it possible for the Administrator to create a scheduled tasks which will run under the context of a user with Admin privileges. Can he then give us permission to execute/run the task. This way the task will run under the identity of the Admin user rather than mine. The task runs a batchfile that runs a nant script that needs admin privileges to create databases from backup, modify the metabase in IIS to create websites using directory services. Thanks in advance Sanjay

I have a folder with thousands of files and at least 100 folders. How can I list all of them that have been modified in the last say 60 days, sorting by date. The dir *.* /s /o:d sorts each folder individually, not all together as one. If I right click on the folder and do a Search, there are so many of them and can get them into a report. Is there a clever way to defragment the C: drive in Windows Server 2000 and/or 2003 from a boot disk (floppy or CD) using dfrg.msc? Obviously it's better to defrag the C: drive before it loads applications, etc. Thanks.

Spoolsv.exe high memory usage
by Guest Joe Quigley- 2 replies

Hello, The Spooler service on my Windows 2003 SP2 server is using 1.6GB (yes, GB) of memory. I can not figure out why the service is using so much memory. There are 14 network printers in use on the server. There are no jobs stuck in any of the queues. Restarting the service reclaims the memory but it will go back to using that much over time. There was a memory leak in SP1 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927744/en-us) but that was supposed to be fixed in SP2. I have checked the version of spoolsv.dll as specified the KB article. I have 5.2.3790.3959 which is later then version referenced in the article. Is anyone else seeing this kind of memory u…

We also run ISA Server 2004 to filter our Thin Clients through from the different sites. 2003 Standard Server And Apple Computers
by Guest Jammer2omega- 0 replies

Starting up a file server in my company. Boss wants to use Server 2003 Standard. We want each person to be able to log into any computer and only access their files. IE: Designers would see all design folders, but not Business data, Whereas, if the designer logged out of the computer and an Accountant logged in, the Accountant would see all the business data but none of the design data. I need this to work for MACs as well, Two running Tiger, and one running Leopard. Also, I know I need a CAL for each one accessing data off of the server, Will These CALs work with MACs? Any and all help will be appreciated, thanks!

I have a share on a server that has reached EOL. I have been robocopying the share files to an alternate machine. What is the best way (most transparent to users) to allow the share name to remain the same but redirect the users to the new storage space? -- "I enjoyed my youth so much that I decided to bring it along with me." -G.C.

Hello, Server 2003 SP2 IE6 SP2 Citrix PS4 MIMEsweeper for Web 5.0.5 running on Server 2000 SP4 We have recently installed Server 2003 SP2 from scratch, setup as TS, installed Citrix, and instaled all our apps. We use auto proxy detection (use wpad.dat file on our proxy server, and this works fine when logged on as administrator. When logged on as any other user, and try and access an Internet URL, IE sits there for ages trying, and eventually times out. Occasionally it would come up with "syntax error" in the title bar of IE. If you add that user to local admin group it still does not work. Tried deleting and recreating the users Windows profil…
