Is there a newsgroup for problems with newsgroups?
by Guest Bob Day- 2 replies

I'm using windows XP Pro high-end system and have a couple problems with various newsgroups or forums... I use the web interface instead of Outlook express; is there a newsgroup on solving problems concerning newsgroups? Here are the two problems: first one I subscribe to newsgroup and receiving e-mail there is always a link in the e-mail go to my post and the response. However probably 50% of time that link does not work on various Microsoft newsgroups. It opens an explorer and simply displays a blank page with the word done in the lower left corner. I often have to find a newsgroup by exactly searching on the title that appears in the e-mail in Goo…

Service Status Not Enumerating
by Guest YingAtt- 0 replies

Hello, We created a service using SC.EXE for <gasp> Oracle Application Server ("opmnctl.exe startall"), and the service creates ok, but have noticed the following problems: (1) Service appears in the services applet, but the status always shows not running despite the actual process status (2) Attempting to start the service via the GUI returns "failed to start in a timely fashion" yet the service does indeed come up Is there anything we can do to correctly enumerate? Thanks!

Service Stopping
by Guest tshad- 3 replies
In Windows 2003, I have a service that once in awhile will not stop when I tell it to. It sits as Stopping and won't finish. Now there seems no way to start it again without rebooting the server. I know what the problem is, just haven't been able to fix all the problems that cause it. Is there a way to kill it so I can restart it without rebooting the server? Thanks, Tom

Folder/Share Permission Issue
by Guest James U- 2 replies

I have 2 servers, identical hardware, that run Server 2003 R2 (Std Ed) w/SP2. Each server has a share for home directories. The permissions are set as follows on both servers: 1)Domain Admins - Full Control - This folder, subfolders, and files 2)Everyone - List Folder / Read Data (under the advanced settings) - This folder only 3)Inheritance is blocked/removed On Server1, any user can click into the share and view the folders and files, but not read/modify anything. On Server2, users outside of the Domain Admins group cannot even get into the share. I used the Effective Permissions tab to see if something looked odd, but they were the same for both ser…

Skipped Files
by Guest John- 5 replies
I just posted this message without entering a subject (I forgot). This is a reposting with minor change. My backup (Symantec BackupExec version 11d) skips the following files: Unable to open the item \\windows2003.ourdomain.com\C:\WINDOWS\security\edb.log - skipped. Unable to open the item \\windows2003.ourdomain.com\C:\WINDOWS\security\tmp.edb - skipped. Unable to open the item \\windows2003.ourdomain.com\C:\WINDOWS\security\Database\secedit.sdb - skipped. What are those files? Is it safe to exclude them from the backup? Thanks in advance.

2003R2 Dev web server will not play video
by Guest Saral6978- 0 replies

I'm going to try and explain this as best as I can...I'm stumped and need some ideas. We have a marketing company who developed a presentation video for us. We used a personal website on an XP box to test the launching of the video and it worked fine - played audio and video and showed you the video controls (play, pause, stop, etc). We then attempted to apply the same code and files to our DEV and TEST webservers, both of which are running Windows 2003 R2 server. For whatever reason, the video will not play. Just a little black screen and it doesn't even show the video controls. We then applied the same code and files to a windows 2000 test box on a…

I have a 2003 Server SP1 which is being used for volume snapshots (EMC Replication Manager) and BackupExec to back them up to tape nightly. About once a month I get the below error in the event log: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7034 Date: Date Time: Time User: N/A Computer: ComputerName Description: The Virtual Disk Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this number time(s). Print drivers and Server 2008
by Guest Jason A Ash- 1 reply

Looking for a recommendation. I have several clients using Windows Server 2008 Terminal Servers, having a problem with the print spooler service stopping. I feel that part of this may stem from the fact that not all the printers in use have drivers for Server 2008. What we did in those cases, was to use the Windows Vista print drivers, which seems to have worked. So, my questions are, was using the Vista drivers a good idea? Or, should we have used Server 2003 drivers, and if so, will they load without a problem? These Terminal Servers were put into an existing enviroment, so we had no control over the printers the remote clients have, some have mult…

Distributing files to workstations
by Guest notagirrafe- 5 replies

I have two applications which are installed by MSI, but which then require administrative logon to each workstation to configure them. I have examines them and captured the changes which are made and it boils down to a few files I need to add to the Windows directory on the workstation. I would like to do that from a normal user logon so I don't have to visit every workstation, but how do I script that? The user logon script fails because it does not have permissions to write to the Windows directory. Thanks in advance.

Hi all, I have a Dell PE 2950 server with a single hardware Raid 5 volume (Basic Disk 0) with 6 drives and a total size of 4655.00 GB. It has 2 partitions: 39MB Dell Utilities Partition 200GB System Boot Partition - C:\ For some reason Disk Management is showing the remaining unallocated space in 2 chunks instead of 1.So it shows the following: 1847.96GB Unallocated 2607.00 GB Unallocated Why is that? I want to create 1 big partition (D:\) with all the remaining unallocated space and I cannot do that now. TIA!

"Do not display last username" with Remote Desktop on Server 2008
by Guest Timothy- 5 replies
I just deployed my first Server 2008 box in our internal environment for testing. We do nearly all management via remote desktop. One of our corporate security policies is to NOT show the last logged on user, to prevent information disclosure of our admin usernames. We use a GPO in our domain to control the "Interactive logon: Do not display last username" setting to set it to ENABLED for all servers. This works on all Server 2003 boxes flawlessly. The Server 2008 box works when you are at the physical console, but when you remote desktop, you are presented with the "logon icons" where you can select the last user or "other user." This behavior vio…

Cannot add printer - W2008
by Guest ThomasAJ- 1 reply

It's a PDF printer on another PC on the network. Had no problems when doing same in W2003. So I click on 'add printer'; a search is done for printers and it is there; I select it; then get a message "The server for the 'XYZ' printer does not have the correct printer driver installed.". I click OK on the next screen and it will only show INF files. There are no INF files for this printer anywhere. -- Regards Tom

Certificate Issue
by Guest Chris- 1 reply

I have a Certificate Issue. I'm trying to pick up the pieces after I took over the administration for a new client. They use RPC over HTTP to allow outside users to access their Exchange Server. The certificate points to a certain domain which expired over the weekend. I.e. the Issued to: field in the certificate points to a domain that is no longer valid. I need to issue a new certificate that points to the new domain. The prior tech support left a certreg file with a .txt extension that begins with: -----BEGIN NEW CERTIFICATE REQUEST----- and ends with: -----END NEW CERTIFICATE REQUEST----- If I submit a new request in the CA using this…

using a backup server
by Guest Phil Rushton- 5 replies

I have two identical servers a main and a backup. Both running 2003 sr2 and terminal services in a workgroup. User profiles and documents are all stored on the main server. I want to be able to synchronize the main server with the backup server so that all I have to do is unplug one and plug in the other so people can carry on working. What is the best practice for doing this? I tried using Backup and Restore but when I log onto the backup server it creates a second empty profile. I named the backup server identical to the first. -- Regards Philip A Rushton ICT Officer 029 2052 7187 http://www.age-concern-cardiff.org.uk Why not visit our onli…

Cooling Server Room

Hi all I am looking at locating 5 servers on a rack in a 2m x 2m cupboard. The heat load seems rather high to me - can anyone comment please? Looking at the specs for the various kit, they quote Btu/hr figures. The new servers give 3990 Btu/hr and the old ones (to be re-used) 1850 Btu/hr. Are these figures the actual dissipated heat that needs to be removed via the air-con or is there some sort of service factor (reduction) to be applied. Allowing for some future contingency I get a conservative figure of approx 30,000 Btu/hr. From my DIY experience, this is enough to heat a small house!! Any advice on the size and type of air-con unit appropriate …
