Introduction to User Accounts and Permissions
by Guest triffid@oink.co.uk- 2 replies

Hi there, At the risk of asking what sounds like a lazy question, does anyone know of any good introductions/tutorials to the Windows user security model (XP, Vista and Server 03/08)? What I mainly want to learn is user accounts and file permissions (and how they work together). Strange as it may seem, it's harder to find well-explained material on this than I'd have expected(!) Any help appreciated- thanks! - Triffid

I have a server with several ips installed on the same interface. I am doing some many to one nat on my FW and would like to test the external address that i have assosciated with these ips. In linux i would run a ping -s "source ip" address. I only see in windows a ping -s for ipv6. Does this exist for ip4 at all in windows 2003? Thanks for the help guys.

Gurus, Running Windows XP Pro SP3. I run my computer as a limited (non-administrator). There is one program I need to launch as an administrator, and I certainly know how to right-click and select "Run As" and input administrative credentials. But what happens is if I save data under that program it goes to the Administror's My Documents and not to my own. So I need to figure out how to use "Run As" but send data to my profile. This would apply to Windows Server 2003 as well I guess. -- Spin

Folder on server regularly becoming locked
by Guest Jason- 6 replies

We're using Windows server 2003 Standard version (5.2 SP2); we use the server to store user data & PST files. Everyones current PST file is stored locally on the C drive but all archive PST files are kept on the server with the users connecting to them via a mapped drive 'U'; i.e. user 1 may have: user1: C:\pst\user1.pst user1archive: U\userdata\pst\archive\user1archive1.pst The problem we are experiencing is that occasionally users are unable to open / expand their archive PSTs, when this occurs the whole of the archive folder on the server is 'locked'. The only solution to the problem is to use 'Open Files' under 'Shared Folders' in 'Computer M…

Win 2003 server switching internet
by Guest Dave Porter- 1 reply

Hi Everyone, One of the sites I look after is running Win2003 server with a 512K ADSL1 connection that is going! ( Don't ask it just is :) ! ) It is being replaced with a 3G Mobile USB Wireless Internet Key Modem. Yesterday I tried to install it on the server ( it is a Huawei model that self installs it's software ), but it just didn't seem to 'see' it when plugged into USB on the server. So I installed it on on of the workstations for the time being ( ADSL is still active until the end of November ) My questions: 1) If I can't install it on the server, can I tell the rest of the network that the internet source is via this USB modem on the works…

Speeding up NTFS access by enabling Content Indexing service?
by Guest MCT Since 1999- 0 replies

If i enable the Indexing service and create a Catalog called "system" and configure for indexing my Win2K3_STD-64 File Server (300.000 files), this will improve performance on regular operations? ("regular operations" is the day-to-day tasks for end users, open folders, subfolders and files). It will be better only in "searches" for files?

by Guest steve- 10 replies

I have a test comptuer. So this is not a productions machine. I have been testing converting from dynamic back to basic disks. I was testing a program called ptedit that several have had success with in doing this. I made the required changed to the hard drive and then rebooted the system. The server reboots fine, but after I log in it imedietly logs me out. There is no time to do anything. I cannot connect to it over the network. I try to reboot vi cd and run the program to put the drive back to the way it was but cannt do this. It seems it cant find the usb drive that had the program on it. My reading tells me that the reason its doing this is becasue it …

Troubleshooting 2008 server hangs
by Guest Chris Cronin- 0 replies

Hi, We have 5 Fujitsu-Siemens rx300S4 servers which I have installed 2008 std 32 bit and 64 bit onto (3 TS, 1 Exchange 2007 and 1 Apps). All are randomly hanging with no BSOD and no response from the console or remotely. Fujitsu have had one of the servers in their workshop for two weeks and run numerous tests with no indication as to the fault, the server has not hung once! I've used the online conciege earlier which pointed me to adplus.vbs and the debugger tools, looking at them though I'm not sure if they will help as they seem to be linked to complete crashes or single/muliple process locks rather than complete hangs! I'm open to any ideas, as I'…

Local User Accounts Not Visible
by Guest Dee Freeland- 3 replies

I imaged a server using Acronis True Image software and then restored it to a different server. Everything worked fine, but I noticed that I can't see any of my local user accounts. I can see the group accounts and memberships. When I attempt to create an account that was a local user, it says that it already exists. Can someone tell me how to fix this? thanks -- dee

CD Writing Wizard breaks after applying security policy
by Guest awrightus@gmail.com- 1 reply

Using Windows 2003 Standard. Prior to implementing a custom local security policy, the CD Writing Wizard (native Win2K CD burning) works fine. IMAPI service starts, no problems. After applying my custom template, the CD Writing Wizard gets to the point where you select "Write these files to CD", assign label, and then it says there's no disc in the drive. My security template is definitely breaking this. "Recording" tab on device still has CD recording "enabled". Not using "Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on user only" in my policy. Here's the kicker. I have determined that if I grant the "Lock pages in memory" right in my local security policy (to…

Register Internet Authentication Service in Active Directory Fails
by Guest cbtg2006- 8 replies

I've come across an odd issue when trying to publish IAS in AD. I've tried three methods of doing it. 1) Via IAS MMC Snap-In. I receive the error: IAS Error: The task was not completed. You may not have sufficient privileges in the xxx.dom domain to perform this task. Please make sure that you have appropriate privileges inthe domain to perform this task or check with Network Admin. 2) Via AD Users & Computers, adding the server to the 'RAS and IAS Servers' group. I get the following error: The following Active Directory error occurred. The requested object has a non-unique identifier and cannot be retrieved. 3) Via netsh, and I receive the follo…

DCOM event id 10009.
by Guest Erik Droszcz- 13 replies

Hi! From time to time I see the following error in my System event log: DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer SERVERNAME using any of the configured protocols. What scares me is that SERVERNAME is an old Exchange 2003 server we uninstalled a long time ago (we are now running Exchange 2007). How can I see where DCOM gets SERVERNAME from? Why does it try to connect to a server uninstalled over six months ago? Regards Erik
