Hi all, When I perform the cmd below, a text file is created with the following text "number=1 ". Note that there's an space after the text, but I don't want that. echo number=1 > file.txt Does anyone know to make echo not adding that space or knows another cmd which could create that file with this specific text? NTPClient on DC fails to contact time source (W2K3 R2 64-bit)
by Guest Dvord Direwood- 8 replies
Our W2K3 R2 64-bit DC has been up and running for some time, and getting time updates regularly. Last week, it started a spate of failed attempts which have become rather chronic. First, I followed advice to set the time source: w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:time.nist.gov,0x8 /syncfromflags:MANUAL net stop w32time net start w32time w32tm /resync Had no luck. I verified that TCP & UDP ports 123 were available to the server and tested successfully with: w32tm /monitor /computers:time.nist.gov I also re-registered the service with: net stop w32time w32tm /unregister w32tm /register net start w32time Also to no avail. I did find a h…

Scheduled Tasks

Sorry to bother, but I was wondering...what is the difference between scheduled tasks in Server 2k3 compared to them in Win xp pro SP2.... Reason I ask is, I've got backup scripts running to a NAS...on the server they are working perfectly, but using the same method on xp, they just don't want to run...security and paths are all correct, no issue talking to anything... Can anyone give me any thoughts/insight into the matter? Thanks...

DFS errors on configuring replication
by Guest Geoff Lane- 8 replies
I've got two servers: Server1 is a recently rebuilt Win2k3 Standard R2 that was previously Win2k3 Standard. The rebuild was because VSS stopped working. Server2 is Win2k Server SP4. Both servers are DCs with Server1 holding all FSMO roles. For the rebuild, I transfered FSMO roles to Server2 then demoted Server1 before reformatting and installing the new OS. Once rebuilt, I tried unsuccesfully to promote Server1 to a DC and subsequently had to use ADSIEdit to clean up the AD before rebuilding again and then successfully promoting Server1, which now also holds the FSMO roles. Mindful of the advice in DFS Help, I've done all the configuration of DFS from…

Recommended Partition Size
by Guest Richard Perry- 8 replies
I would like to see what other's are doing for creating partitions on Server 2003 with Server 2008 in mind. Typically, I create a C drive for OS and Applications (16 GB), and leave the remaining disk space as a D drive for user/application created files. In the past, space limitations on the system drive has been a concern when the C drive was 6, 8, or even 12 GB depending on the flavor of Windows Server running. Building out a new Server 2003 box, with the idea of upgrading to Server 2008 shortly after RTM, and that this would be a single purpose server (file or print or application), what would the recommended size for the system partition be? …

How to check the box "Show icon in notification area when connected" in NIC properties using Netsh?

How to check the box "Show icon in notification area when connected" in NIC properties using Netsh? Gurus, Previously on this newsgroup I had asked if there was a Netsh script by which I could set the parameters of my local NIC. There was. One must use the "netsh interface ip set address" syntax. Now, is there any way one can tell netsh to check the box "Show icon in notification area when connected"? A BIG bonus to anyone who comes up with this answer! -- Spin

I'm running Windows 2003 R2 X64 SP2. [W2K3]Empty desktop
by Guest PhilTheGap- 8 replies

Hi there, I need to constraint a user account on a W2K3 computer in order to: - launch an app when this account is accessed via Terminal server/Citrix - prevent the user to do something else: so the desktop must be empty, the Start menu also, Ctrl-Alt-Suppr must be impossible... This account will be a local server account. Is there security model for that ? Is applying a GPO the best solution ? Thanks for you help... Philippe

Something is editing jpegs on my server
by Guest Jordon- 8 replies

Yesterday I posted a question about auditing file access and I got that working fine, but now that it's working I have a completely different problem. Starting last Saturday I found a few jpeg images were being edited (and backed up, and that's what started this) during times when no one was in the building. The first day it was only a few. Sunday there were a few more. More on Monday. Last night there were over 90. Nothing else on the server (Win2k SP4) that was being backed up, was something that wouldn't normally get backed up every day. So I turned on object access auditing for the folder(s) that contained the images and I found they were edited by th…

One network, two domains
by Guest Wowbagger- 8 replies

In the building there is one physical network and one Windows (2000?) server that serves up DHCP assignments, handles the gateway and so forth. For most people in the building they use this domain and all is well. There is another group of people in the building with their own 2003 server. Aside from the physical wiring, DHCP and gateway they have absolutely nothing to do with the domain that everybody else uses. The few exceptions above aside, there is absolutely zero resource sharing between this group and the existing domain. They would like to set up their own domain, active directory, sharepoint and other services. The 2003 server is already co…

Windows Universal Storage Server 2003 quits working
by Guest IT_Cowboy- 8 replies

I am having a problem with Windows Storage server . Every three weeks (to the day) stops communicating with the domain controllers. At first it seems like a network issue, but no other machines are affected (either servers or workstations). The symptoms are as follows: 1. Cannot remote desktop into the machine, says domain controller cannot be reached for authentication (UserEnv error ID 1053 occurs in Application log) 2. DFS Replication stops (of course it cannot find either DC, one of which it replicates to Event ID 5002) 3. Local workstations can access files, remote workstations that need to authenticate to acces files cannot 4. Not able to con…

That's it.. just looking to see if anyone knows how to tell when a particular computer was joined to a domain. I have a computer that was joined to a domain probably close to 9 months ago, but now I need to verify exactly when. Oh, I need to do this on the server - I don't have access to the computer that joined the domain to verify this info. Thanks in advance!

RWW for W2K3 Std.?
by Guest Michael Hering- 8 replies

Hello everyone, I know that Remote Web Workplace (RWW) is a standard feature of Microsoft Windows Small Business Server; however, I was wondering if there is a similar feature that can be installed on a Microsoft Windows 2003 Standard Server? We have a client who is interested in this technology, but their environment warrants a full standard edition of Windows Server. Thanks everyone and I look forward to reading your responses.

ok call me stupid, but I need some pointers ; just installed email services (SMPT) and setup a remote domain..how the heck does one go about testing ability to send a simple outbound mail and what are the execution steps ? Have no idea where to start. I am running windows server 2003 enterprise under Computer Management, IIS, you can see that SMTP was installed - it says "default virtual SMTP Server and underneath it says "domains" and also "Current sessions". Thats all thats happened. The only think I want to do is be able to send outbound emails now, and havent a clue how to enable this. Looking for a step by step list if possible. Also, I tried this:…
