Disaster Recovery Plan for complete system restoration
by Guest Roman- 3 replies

All, I'd like some real-world advice please. I manage a small 5 user client-server network with a tight budget. The network uses a single server running Win 2K3 R2. The server has several additional roles including IIS with WSS3 and a suite of applications running under Terminal Services. I've progressively worked through the precautionary steps including hardware RAID1 and daily backups using NTbackup to an external USB hard drive. I have an ever present linguring concern about disaster recovery. I've researched and read numerous tutorials and MS articles however many real-world forum threads are not so comforting. A real-world thread I read only d…

file corruption after disk got too full
by Guest Rob- 1 reply

Hello, Here's the scenario: 2003 server, RAID 5 with 2 partitions. D partition had 1 huge folder (about 500GB), and partition itself was about 535GB. Data grew unexpectedly & got up to about 534GB. Got errors in event logs pertaining to disk full, and immediately moved folder to partition with more room using Xcopy. Have since discovered that corruption did occur randomly in some sub folders. Files are mostly .dwg & .pdf files. If I run a scan disk on the new partition where the data was moved to, could it possibly repair some of these corrupted files? New partition is on a DAS & is about 2.1TB in size, so chkdsk would take a long time t…

Folks: I need to know if anyone is aware of any software that can record everything that is being done on a PC I own and store this on a file in that computer or on a server in my own company where we can access it from another computer and view the recording without interfering with the usage of the recorded machine. Is there such a thing? Please advise... Bikini Browser San Juan Puerto Rico

login contain no "this computer"
by Guest Jeff- 4 replies

Hey I've performed a fresh installation of windows server 2003 enterprise. After installation I've promoted this this machine to primary domain controller. After I'd promoted it do dc then I cannot find the "this computer" in the login screen. I find only the netbios name of the domain in that "log on to" drop down list this PDC cannot use netbios domain name to ping the domain it's set to be a controller of... If I use fully qualified dns name then it works... Lets say dns is: test.local, the I can ping using test.local, but ping TEST doesn't work any suggestion?

Questions about using IDMU and Services for NIS for Linux authentication
by Guest Rob Gordon- 2 replies
We are trying to create a single point of authentication for our heterogeneous Linux/Windows environment. I have set up a Windows 2003 R2 server as a main AD server and installed the Identity Management for Unix subsystem. Do I also need to install any other services, or does choosing IDMU automatically install all the necessary subservices (RPC port mapper, etc.) that are required for allowing Linux/Unix hosts to authenticate to the AD server acting as an NIS Master? Also, in order for the Linux machines to properly authenticate off the Windows NIS Master server, does the Linux machine need to be configured to do so using Kerberos?

It is the master time keeper for my domain which is great but it can't seem to keep time in itself. How do I make it a slave to an internet time server? I need to lock down CD/DVD writer and USB for some PCs so users only can read CD/DVD or USB but not able to copy/write anything to it. Of course, I don't want to impact other functions, such as USB mouse, Keyboard, even Blackberry. Is there a easy way to do it, for instance GPO? I'm running Win2K3 SP2. Thanks.

Network Printer offline server 2003 untill re install
by Guest Peter- 0 replies

Hello there. I am currently swapping all the printers in the office to the new print server we have. We have 6 in total and 5 are working without issues. I am having an issue trying to get a network printer to stay online. After i add it to my print server it will stay on status "ready" for about 30 mins to an hour where i can successfully print, however after that time the printer changes to offline. I first thought it was the printer that was the problem so i went and checked the physical connections and all seemed ok. I then checked further by adding the printer connection to the old print server, and the printer then reports as "ready" and has b…

How to I recreate the Everyone Group
by Guest colin- 1 reply
I accidentlly deleted the Everyone Group on the Windows 2003 Domain Controller using the Active Directory Users and Computers Utility. Now users can't access various applications on another server as well as open files. When I try to add the Everyone group back in it gives me the error message - 'Windows cannot create the object Everyone because: The specified user already exists.' I've rebooted the server and searched for solutions using Google. Anyone have any ideas how to get this group back? Thanks Colin

Hi - if anyone can offer a suggestion, that would be great! I have a script, running on a win2003 server that won't download a file via http. It gives an http 500 error. Are there permissions, or limitations, etc that have to be set/overcome to do this? I expect the script isrunning as a guest or internet user process, and this may be a factor. Thanks Michael

Seize FSMO Roles from 2003 to 2000 DC ?
by Guest Alex- 3 replies
Hi. We currently have two DCs, one Windows 2003 and one Windows 2000. The 2003 server holds all FSMO roles and both DCs are GCs. The 2003 server has failed and we are waiting on replacement hardware. I would like to seize the FSMO roles to the 2000 DC, cleanup the references left over from the failed 2003 DC, install 2003 on the new server with the same name and IP as the failed DC. Can anyone confirm: 1. Is there any problems with seizing the FSMO roles from a 2003 to a 2000 DC ? 2. Can anyone recommend whether it is better for me to seize the FSMO roles and reinstall the failed DC from scratch, or whether I should do a non-authorative restore …

I've been scouring website after website on what seems to be an easy fix. Is there a way to force reauthentication when connecting to a server? We originally thought of seeing if there was a way to place a secondary password on a share but didn't know how that would affect the Mac clients in our company. The situation is this- Mac and Windows clients connect to an AD file server (2003) for both their personal shares and Dept. shares. Some department shares are quite sensitive and so we need those shares to ignore any previously created token and force the user to log in again. Is there some sort of policy that can be applied to the share? Does anyone …

Unable to access company website witihin company network with www
by Guest CPickler- 2 replies

All of the computers are unable to access the company website from within the company network if they type in the http://www.website.com, however they can access it by going to http://website.com. The webpage is not hosted internally. We have seperate webhosting, however we do have DNS running on the server. I tried creating a forward lookup zone but it didn't work. I could have set it up incorrectly. What typically causes this error. This is only an issue because we just hired a person to work on the webpage, but since it is ftp.website.com it is not working at all saying the server cannot be found. It can be accessed from outside of the company ne…

Accessing event logs and services from a remote Server
by Guest Jupst- 0 replies
Hi, Does anyone know which permissions / settings are required to allow a user to remotely access the Services and Event Logs of a Windows Server via the MMC Snap Ins? I need to allow a group of users read-only access to this information from one central Server. I don't want the users to have Domain Admin rights. Currently, the users have read-only access to the logs when they are logged in locally, but they have no access when connecting from the MMC of another Server. Any help would be appreciated!!! Many thanks.
