We have a Windows 2003 Enterprise server hosting an ipp site for all of our campus printers, and we're familiar with adding drivers for the various Windows platforms so clients can easily install the printers. Is there a way to add Vista drivers to the W2K3 server so that Vista clients can also easily install the ipp printers? TIA!

Prevent user from deleting one file
by Guest Rik G.- 3 replies
I've given a user full control over a folder, its sub folders and files. I want to prevent the user from deleting one particular file in that folder. He should only be able to read it. I check all Deny permissions for that file for that user except Read Data. In the resultant permissions all looks OK. However, the user cannot read the file (Access denied) and he can still delete it. What's going on? Regards R.

How to resize the system partition?
by Guest WetBehindEars- 0 replies
Is it safe to use PartionMagic on a Windows Server 2003 box? I have a client who's system partitioin is just about full and I'd rather resize the partition instead of purchasing 3 new SCSI drives and installing them (RAID-5). I have moved everything I can possibly move from the system partition, so my options are PartitionMagic (if its feasable) or order them 3 new larger drives and rebuild it. Could I take out one of the old drives and put the newer larger drive in and let that rebuild itself? Then do that with the other 2 new lager drives? What is the best way to go when having to replace a RAID-5 drive setup?

Configuring manage printer permissons
by Guest Paul- 1 reply
Hi, We currently have a central server running 2003r2 which is managing printers for the servers. We have the option of manually amending the security rights via the print management console however as we are looking to roll out 50 more servers with roughly 4 printers per server, automatic security policy would aid us to ensure that a standard security structure is in place. We would like to assign a helpdesk group rights to manage printers but not to allow them local admin or power user rights. Is there any way of setting up a script in group policy to achieve the automatic assignment of printer security rights on the servers? Thanks P…

Hello, We have a Windows 2003 server which someone else has done a "clean insall" of the operating system. Now we are configuring some 3rd party software that requires we have access to the mail icon in the control panel, yet we do not have the typical mail icon in the control panel. My question is, which component during a windows install is the one that places that icon in the control panel, so I can add it from Add /Remove Windows Components. Any tips welcome.. Thanks

http 500 error accessing remote files via perl's lwp::simple
by Guest Michael- 0 replies
Hi - I'm trying to access a file via a perl script that works on windows NT server, but it doesn't work on 2003 server. It tries to go out an d get a file via http, retrieve & store it locally (lwp::simple mirror command). There doesn't seem to be a problem with creating a file locally, I can do that when I test that separately. I get an HTTP 500 error. My question is this: does Win2003 server need something specially set up to allow a call out via http like this to happen. Of course, regular web browsing and file downloading is fine, but perhaps this is using a different method of http or something? Thanks

Search inside .BAS and .FRM files
by Guest Nick- 2 replies

Search inside .BAS and .FRM files We are trying to search network shared directories and NEED to look inside ..BAS and .FRM file formats for specific word or characters strings. These files can be opened with a basic text editor but the built-in Microsoft Search engine will not look into these files. I was told by a Microsoft Senior Product Manager that certain file extensions have been removed from the searching engine in order to speed up searches. I don't know if this is true but I do know that I cannot currently search inside these files now. Is there a registry hack or other means that would let us search inside these files? We have File ser…

How to get a listing of files and file sizes off a server
by Guest ghutnick- 1 reply
I have a 2003 server with the C: drive suddenly running out of space. I am using this server as my veritas backup server, however the logs and AOFO information goes to the D: as to not take up space on C. Last week I had approximately 2gb free and today I have less than 200mb. I am trying to find out what is taking up that space. Nothing has been updated or added recently. Is there a utility to give me a breakdown of the files, locations and sizes?

Hello, I'm having a crazy issue where I set a laptop users profile to roaming so could than pull her profile to a new laptop I'm building for her however, now that I have her profile on the new machine, I removed the line in her profile so it will stop roaming. Now, for some reason I can't get the system/server to stop redirecting her desktop. That is the only folder being redirected and when I change the path in the registry it reverts back. This happens on any machine I log in to with her credentials. Help please! :) -- Regards, Jeremy Johnston I.T. Engineer CCNA - MCP

Hi, I have been attempting to use NTBackup to backup the system state. This always fails and the report tells me to look in the event logs. In the application log I find a backup 8012 error that says The Active Directory returned 'unable to update the password. The value providedas the current password is incorrect. 'from a call to 'BackupPrepare()' additional data '\\servername'. I also get ntbackup error messages 8001 and 8019. In the security log i get a 'failure audit' id 537 which complains about the usernames password and the authentication package is NTLM. this is stopping me from backing up the system state and is therefore producing warning e…
