best method...
by Guest Chris Meehan- 2 replies

I have 2 forests that do NOT have any trusts setup. IP and DNS connectivity is there and I can manually map a network drive from a server in domain a to domain b. What would be the best method to keep this driver persistent for any user that logs into the box and not have to provide the other domain credentials for the mapping at every login. Thanks in advance.

Auto-copy files to local machine on login
by Guest Coleman- 3 replies
We've got some support files for AutoCAD that we want to have residing on each user's local machine while they're working in CAD. We've got the master copies of the support files on a network share, but we don't want to have AutoCAD always looking to the network for files (in case users are working offline). How could I go about adding a login script that would copy files from a network location to a known location on the local machines, a sort of "syncing" of a folder, so that everyone's always got the most up-to-date version of the files?

multiple copies of my documents in users folder
by Guest PMGkenk- 0 replies
We are using a Windows 2003 file storage server for the users folders and have DFS running on the network. We have noticed the size of the backup increasing and found that multiple users folders have the my documents folder in their users folder. Then inside that folder there is another my documents folder with a complete copy of everything and inside that another my documents folder and this goes as much as 15 layers deep. Does anyone know the cause and solution for this issue. -- PMGkenk

Quota Management - Account information unavailable
by Guest Ricki_Ricardo- 0 replies
We have a Windows 2003 Server, up to date on patches. When I look at the quotas for users, I see "account information unavailable" for many users. Some may have left, but many are still here and in the same domain as everyone else. Since it is one domain, I don't believe it is a trust issue. By matching up user folders with users in the quota list, I can find which are "missing". Just to choose one, user X has 40MB they used in their folder. I can see their folder and their files, but their quota entry is one that is "account information unavailable". I thought I could go in and add a quota entry, but alas when I do that their name does appear, but …

Windows Storage Server 2003 R2
by Guest Christopher Haydon- 0 replies
I am looking at Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 and trying to get my head around the OS varients The seem to be a range of 4 versions talked about, Express, Workgroup, Standard and Enterprise by various vendors so I assume that some sort of SKU exist for these as surely Microsoft don't simply allow OEMs to invent new product names. I can understand if I buy a normal server from Dell or HP with OEM Windows 2003 Standard you get Windows 2003 Standard plus some OEM customisations like OpenManage or Insight Manager, MS are defining the product descriptions not the OEM. Is there any sort of list of what the each of these "base" products contain sans OEM ad…

VSS How?
by Guest UselessUser- 0 replies
Hi all, I am trying to work out how VSS works in detail.. I did post a similar post in the Exchange forum but have not had a response so am hoping that someone here may know... As far as I understand it.. software wise a copy on write solution is used... So when a backup is scheduled, VSS creates a map of the disk and pauses all i/o to the disk, once the map is created it allows i/o and allows any changes to be made to the disk, whilst copying the original contents of the disk to the diff area. My question is what does ntbackup do now! Does it attempt to create the backup from the diff area and then read any unchanged parts from the original disk?…

HELP: Internet Time on 2003 Server
by Guest Th@would.be.telling- 4 replies

Why can't I get my domain server to correct itself by periodically checking an internet time server. It is the master time keeper for my domain which is great but it can't seem to keep time in itself. How do I make it a slave to an internet time server. Which is a good time server to use.TIA -- Posted via NewsDemon.com - Premium Uncensored Newsgroup Service ------->>>>>>http://www.NewsDemon.com<<<<<<------ Unlimited Access, Anonymous Accounts, Uncensored Broadband Access

Is it possible to extend a partition ?
by Guest Peter- 7 replies
We are running Windows 2003 on SAN. We have allocated some more space to that server. We have attempted to use diskpart.exe to extend the primary partition but it is not successful. Someone says that it is due to the partitions are primary partition while someone says that the disk is "Basic Disk" and not "Dynamic Disk". I would like to know is there any tools we can extend the partition to use the additional unallocated space. Thanks

/PAE /3G problem
by Guest FabioG- 1 reply
Hi, We have a serious problem on our production cluster. It's a MSCS cluster with 16GB RAM for each node and Windows 2003 EE Server R2 sp2 32 bit installed on 64bit processors. In the file boot.ini the parameter /PAE is set. We're trying to set the /3GB flag as well but after rebooting a node , but we have experienced serious instability at the OS level. Windows is not responding anymore relating to OS basic processes that fail to start, network interfaces not recognized anymore and other weird stuff concerning domain policies and user environment. So we took the /3GB off the boot.ini. Is the /3GB usable together with the /PAE parameter in such an architecture…

Odd Problem - Picture & Fax Viewer on 2003 Server
by Guest Skitrees- 0 replies
Okay - I have a very odd problem. I have three directories on a 2003 server which are shared out. No one has access to logon to the server as "admin" user except me, and all configurations on the server have been static for about a year. The only changes have been standard Windows updates. Suddenly, ONE of the shared folders won't allow users to open images via the Picture & Fax Viewer. I even tried directly from the server itself and find the same problem. Any picture files in the root of this folder won't open in Picture & Fax Viewer. All other folders are fine. Even if I take the photos from the problem folder, and place them in a subf…

Home Directory Permissions problem - shocking discovery!
by Guest thegrotto@gmail.com- 1 reply
I got a call from a client today claiming that a staff member could see everything in another staff member's home directory. I calmly pointed out that they could problably actually only see the home directory itself, but nothing in it, since only the owner and Domain Admins have permissions on home directories. However, I remoted in, logged in as the staff member in question, and BINGO! I can see ANYONE's home directory, and open files in it... In fact, this staff member has full control over every other staff member's home directory. I don't know how this can be. The staff memeber's account is only a member of the Domain Users security group, and that group i…

by Guest johnboy1981- 2 replies

Hi all, Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this but I'm having trouble locting any forums for windows server 2003. I was wondering if anyone knows if Microsoft have changed the above exam to incorporate WSUS yet or is it still related to SUS. I cannot find any exam objectives that specifically relate to this. The official Microsoft Press book I have still says it relates to SUS but this was from 2006. Can anyone tell me if its changed yet or should I still be learning about SUS? Many thanks Regards, John
