Hi all. I am unable to rdp into my server after doing manual windows update. Upon windows update completion i would manually restart the server. Previously if i just click on the restart button from the windows update dialog box i would have this problem. All my other servers do not face this problem except this particular server. All my servers are of win2003 standard with sp2 and have the latest patches. Is there any setting i can do to prevent this issue? Thks in advance.

MS DNS Server and corrupt cache records
by Guest Richard Price- 0 replies

Hi, I have been having a reoccuring issue where my Windows DNS Server suddenly stops resolving high profile major websites (news.bbc.co.uk as an example), and the only way to get it to resolve these domains again is to clear the cache. This happens every few days. Is this a known issue, or is there something that I am supposed to be doing? Is there a long term solution? Regards Richard

Print Confirmation Popup
by Guest Ian McCulloch- 10 replies

Hi all I am sure the bulk of the questions behind this topic are concerned with how to turn it off. But we print over a WAN and I need to ensure the successful print popup window appears for users who print to remote printers in other geographical locations. 1. I use HP printers everywhere with internal jet direct cards. 2. On both my Windows print server and the advanced print properties on each terminal server i have the following set under print properties>advanced tab: "Show informational notifications for network printers" and "Notify when remote documents are printed" Is there any other setting that could override these settings? Are the …

I just recently setup Windows server 2008 standard, i currently have about 30 active users, and AD is installed and working fine... But my question is, how come if i type in a browser \\person\c$ it prompts me for a password and no matter what password i enter i still get refused? The user i normally use is administrator and that user is a member of domain admins.... firewalls are turned off by GPO This setup is a simple one domain forest... Any idea why? Thanks.. -- Rob...

Hi, I recently installed an Enterprise Root CA on my domain and am running into some issues with my servers autoenrolling a computer certificate while all of my workstations can autoenroll without any issue. Also, the CA can autoenroll itself for a computer certificate as well. Some background regarding this listed below: -All servers are Windows 2003 SP2 Enterprise -All workstations are Windows 2000 SP4 -CA is installed on a member server in the domain -Workstations are able to autoenroll and request a cert via MMC and Web -Servers to include DC's are unable to autoenroll or request via MMC and Web MMC error I get is "The certificate request failed bec…

Recovery Console Install Does Not Boot
by Guest Greg- 0 replies

All, I've recently installed the Recovery Console on a 2003 x86 server and a 2003 x64 server (both new PowerEdge servers) however when I reboot and select the RC option it quickly displays "a disk read error occurred" and it fails to start. I figured that it was maybe having a problem reading the SCSI disk so I took a look at the unsupdrv.inf file in the cmdcons folder and it appeared to be referencing the percsas.sys driver correctly (i.e. correct PERC hardware ID and sys file location) so I'm at a loss as to what's up. Both installs were run from either the i386 or amd64 folders and both ran dynamic update during the install. Any ideas on this would b…

ImagePath Getting Deleted
by Guest richlich- 0 replies

Windows Server 2003 x64 with latest SP and patches. Upon reboot a large number of services fail to start. Primarily this is due to the ImagePath missing for that service in the Registry. When that value is entered manually, of course the service (and any dependant service) will start. What might be the reason for this? What other corruption should we be looking for? (Backup Exec 11d cannot query the System State when choosing it for backup.)

One of the Windows 2003 Member Servers within our Domain is keeping its local System Time incorrectly. We have repeatedly set the System Time to sync via net time to one of the Time Servers (Domain Controllers). When we perform this function manually from command line using Net Time, the time syncs to the time server and gives us back a "successful" message. Unfortunantly, we see that the local System Clock stays 1 hour behind even after this Windows Time success sync message. What could be causing the Windows Server 2003 to keep its local System Time 1 hour off, and not update its time based on time received from the Domain Controller?

DHCP Issue
by Guest KDawg44- 0 replies

Hello, We have three scopes set up, subnet 1, 2, & 3, on a single DHCP server. We have a VLAN for each subnet. However, if a machine moves from an office on subnet 1, to the conference room on subnet 2, the machine holds the old subnet 1 address. It will not give up the address on reboot, disable/reenable the NIC, release/renew, anything. The only way to get the address to be given up and get an address on the new subnet it to manually go to the DHCP server, delete the lease, set a static address on the NIC on the machine and ping, then set the NIC back to DHCP. At this point it will get the correct address on Subnet 2. Then this must be repeated when…

How do I specify the <Component> for diskshadow?
by Guest Michael B. Smith [MVP]- 0 replies
- 497 views
I am attempting to use diskshadow.exe on Windows Server 2008 RTM. My question is specifically with the "writer verify" and "writer exclude" commands. The technet help at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771649.aspx is fairly non-specific. It tells me that the syntax is “writer exclude [<Writer> | <Component>]” and that “Writers are specified by ID.“ But it doesn’t tell me how to specify <Component>! For example, I can get the writer ID from “vssadmin list writers”. No problem, and that works great. As an example: writer exclude {542da469-d3e1-473c-9f4f-7847f01fc64f} works fine. To get the components, I go…

We have added a hash rule to software restriction policy to "disallow" user from executing the Window Live messenger (msnmsgr.exe) However, we would like to allow certain group of people (ie: Customer service colleague) to run the Live Messenger, so I created an OU, then add another hash rule to msnmsgr.exe and set it to "unrestricted", and then put all customer service colleague in that OU. But I found that this does not work, it seems that the OU's "unrestricted" rule does not override the Default Group policy's "disallow" rule. And now all the customer service colleague cannot access Live Messenger. Would anyone can help on this ? thanks

Task Planer - Behaviour Windows 2000 and 2003
by Guest Mike Hansen- 0 replies
Hi, I created a Scheduled Task on Windows 2003 Server. Sometimes I have to start the Task manually in a RDP Session. The Task is starting a simple batch script. When I start it manually the Script is running in the DOS Box. While it´s running I´m logging of my session. Then the task is stopped with the following Error Code: c000013a. When I do the same action on a Windows 2000 Server the task is still running when I log off from the session and when I re-logon. Anyone has a suggestion to get the same behaviour on Windows 2003 ?

Thread Monitoring
by Guest LCermak@branick-inc.com- 0 replies

We have a distributed application that uses IIOP to communicate to an application server (EAServer) running on Windows Server 2003 SP1. We are trying to understand how the servers allocate threads for processes and if there are any tools to monitor the threads that are being created and used by windows. We think that at some point client requests are waiting for a thread to become available. How can we monitor threads and their status? We have gone thru many many tests to believe that the server waits for threads to become available. We have verified that the connection is established from the client to the server and then may wait if the condition above appea…

WINS not working. Please Help.
by Guest skymax_taf- 0 replies

In one of our domains we run WINS to support Windows 98 machines. Recently, WINS stopped working and I have come to the end of my rope trying to figure out why. What I am seeing is: In System Event Viewer - Event ID: 4102 The connection aborted by the remote WINS. Remote WINS may not be configured to replicate with the server. (Getting this message on the forest level DC and on each local DC) Replication on each DC setup to push/pull per Microsoft standard instructions. WINs console, at Forest level, shows all DCs in lower domains. Each has a green arrow to the left of their name. dcdiag states - failed test systemlog Event ID: 0x40011006 RPC (call) se…

Hello In Windows 2003 Server users can also be put into one or more groups. By putting users into these groups the users may inherit permissions and privileges that were not granted to them directly. If asked to administer user accounts to an existing Windows 2003 Server installation how would one track down all of the groups that a user account belongs to and how would one know what all the permissions and privileges are that the user inherited and were assigned directly? -- JB

Shutdown/Poweroff Workstations at night automatically
by Guest lforbes- 7 replies

I am quite surprised Microsoft hasn't come up with a reliable piece of software to power off workstations at night. I have tried using both shutdown.exe (no ability to cancel) and beyond2exec (errors out on the server) with no real luck. I am looking for a reliable but inexpensive way to shut computers off at night that gives some type of logging. I have 300 computers and need to make sure they are shutting down without check each and everyone's event viewer. I see lots of batch file type utilities but they seem to rely on Scheduled Tasks to run. If Scheduled Tasks was reliable it would be fine, but unfortunately it isn't. I don't care if there …

hi all, it has been difficult finding any info or guides on how to set up my server for game hosting, so i hope someone here can help! Let me start out by saying the hardware and bandwidth are more than adequate to run a dedicated server here. I am running windows server 2003 enterprise edition x64, and i would like to know what role to run for a server that will be used only for hosting a dedicated gaming server, and any management or setup tweaks, bandwidth and security tips would also be helpful, i dont need game specific help, i have that covered , the server can run the dedicated mode now, but i have not really finished setting it up properly, just ou…
