'Access Denied' copying between computers
by Guest berry.lindsay@gmail.com- 0 replies

OK, here's the scenario. I have a Server 2003 Active Directory domain. I have two computers on the domain. Same user, a domain admin, is logged into both computers. Whenever I attempt to copy from the 'my documents' folder on one computer to the other, using the administrative share (c$) I get the 'access denied' message. The My Documents folder is encrypted using NTFS encryption. I have tried initiating the copy from one computer then the other. While logged in on only one, both, or none. I have tried initiating the copy from a 3rd computer, no go. The user has a home directory on the server, he can copy freely between the My Documents and the home di…

'Eject Tape Flag' registry setting
by Guest Steve- 1 reply

OS: Server 2003 R2. I was digging through the registry to change the number or NTBackup logs from 10 to 30 and noticed a registry key I haven't seen before. Location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Ntbackup Does anyone know what the 'eject tape flag' reg key controls? I don't have access to my 2003 server just now but it might be 'tape eject flag' instead, it may also be under one of the sub keys. I'm hoping it means the tape will be auto ejected after the backup completes (crosses fingers). I cannot find any documentation of this setting and don't have permission to test it.

'password expired' flag?
by Guest Special Access- 0 replies

Most of our users access a web site remotely, but use a local authentication for access. Problem is they can't tell when their password is expiring until it's expired and authentication fails. Is there a way to tell if the password is expired on an account in AD via scripting? Thanks Mike

"Access Denied" for Home Directories
by Guest NetGoofy- 2 replies
Not sure which Group to post this. All network users "Home Directories" are configured in AD under the Profile Tab H: - \\servername\users\%username% I have a few (2 to 4) users that receive an "Access Denied" message when they attempt to open thier (H:) drive. This doesn't happen all the time - it is very spartic. All I do to correct the issue is disconnect the (H:) drive and re-map it and unchecking the "connect at login" option - because I know it will reconnect because of thier profile settings when they login - and it does. They don't have to reboot/logout-login or anything of that nature. By just being able to re-map the drive tells me tha…

Hi All, We recently upgraded a windows 2000 server to Windows 2003 enterprise edition server, it was a fresh installation. We created all the shares which existed and gave permissions, and user started working on it for the last 2 days, yesterday we gave windows update and updated the server using express update, so almost everything got updated. This server is a member server in a AD domain, users are grouped this way. Two groups H1 and H2 were created in "Tai2d/built" OU and all users were placed in respective groups according to their privileges. But from today onwards some users are not able to access some shares. for eg. user1 and user2 are exactly …

Hi all, This is the first time I post question here...glad to have these newsgroup for seeking help. I encounter a problem in setting a property for a domain account. I need to enable an account option for a user "Account is trusted for delegation" in the user's properties under Active Directory, however, this option is not available in the Active Directory Users and Computer in office computer. When I back home and turn on my testing PC, I found that this option is shown on the form. I really don't understand what is missing in our office's windows 2003 server configuration? "Deleting - printed"
by Guest Tyler McLaughlin- 2 replies

We upgraded our print cluster (W2K3 SP1) to SP2 last week. Ever since the upgrade we have an issue with the following 4 HP "inbox" drivers: HP LaserJet 4 HP LajerJet 5 HP LaserJet 1200 PCL HP LaserJet 4000 PCL 6 The issue is this; any and all jobs spooled through queues using any one of the above mentioned drivers remain in a "Deleting - printed" state after successfully printing. I've seen a post on the internet regarding this http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=742518 which recommends giving "everyone" full control to the WINDOWS\Temp directory. I've tested this and it is not working. I've also tried reinstalling those 4 print driver…

"Desktop Features"
by Guest Patrick D.- 5 replies

Hi It is not very common, but I make very good experiences using Windows Server 2008 as my Workstation OS - after installing desktop features (Media Player, Windows Mail, ...). But I have two little details, to fix: 1. Beside Media Player, "Windows Live Messenger Download" Icon is installed during desktop features installation; so everyone can install the program, if needed. Unfortunately this messenger app cannot be installed in this Server OS (error message). How can I still install it? Is there a possibility to temporary switch a specific registry entry, that Windows Live Messenger will "think" to install the program on Vista or XP? Which is this…

"Do not display last username" with Remote Desktop on Server 2008
by Guest Timothy- 5 replies
I just deployed my first Server 2008 box in our internal environment for testing. We do nearly all management via remote desktop. One of our corporate security policies is to NOT show the last logged on user, to prevent information disclosure of our admin usernames. We use a GPO in our domain to control the "Interactive logon: Do not display last username" setting to set it to ENABLED for all servers. This works on all Server 2003 boxes flawlessly. The Server 2008 box works when you are at the physical console, but when you remote desktop, you are presented with the "logon icons" where you can select the last user or "other user." This behavior vio…

"error on page"
by Guest Eileen- 7 replies

I have tried now for days and have spent many hours on the phone with hardware manufacturers and internet provider "experts" but have been unable to solve this problem: Every time I attempt to access a specific website (and ONLY this website), I get an error on page message on far left lower corner. In addition, I cannot see any pictures and a strange message (below) appears. The website in question is http://www.dell.com. The irony is that I am using a Dell computer. We have disabled windows firewall and my antivirus software and still same error. We have updated adobe flash and JAVA. We have attempted to access this site with several browsers and st…

I'm trying to get this alert to function in and I'm struggling with it. I followed kb: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300504 I've set the following: Counters: Errors Granted Access & Errors Logon Alert when the value is: Over & Limit is 1 Interval: 1 second Actions: Log & Send a network message I then created a share on the member server from where I'm configuring alerts and tried accessing both the share and a test file within the share. I see no alerts in the event viewer or any network messages. Any ideas? Thank you for your time!

"external entity" on server 2003 sp2
by Guest Costin Gusa- 1 reply

Hi, I have a Windows Server 2003 SP2 install, member of a NT4 domain (yes, i know, don't ask! :) ) When I open local users and computers section of computer management I see some users listed as "External entity" Some "external entity"'s are certain known domain users (and they have corresponding profiles under 'c:\documents and settings\'), but there are two of them that are neither local or domain users and I'd like to find out more. The NT4 domain has only one BDC and has no trusts. I've tried searching for 'external entity' but these terms are too generic. Could someone point me to some documentation where I could understand where are these users comi…

Hi! We have some legacy code that uses OLE DB to connect to a SQL server. After migrating to Windows Server 2008, the code stopped working. The error we are seeing is 80040E4D, "Invalid authorization specification". Below is the VBScript that we use to reproduce the error. This script runs without problems on Server 2003 and XP computers but fails on any 2008 box. Any help is appreciated! dim sConnection sConnection = "Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Data Source=******;Database=*****;UID=*****;PWD=*****;" dim cnExecute Set cnExecute = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection") cnExecute.Open sConnection dim rs Set rs = CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset") rs.ActiveConnection = …

"Log on Locally" User Right
by Guest JayDee- 2 replies
My question is: "what -exactly- is the "log on locally" user right? Here's some background... We recently updated a policy to lock down the "Log on Locally" user right for our servers to include only "Administrators" and "Domain Admins" - The user right was currently not defined. Our thought was that this would lock the environment down so that only administrators could log onto servers at the console. The first problem we ran into was with the Citrix servers. Apparently, "Log on Locally" is required for clients to connect to citrix servers. This surprised me, since I thought a client session would be considered a terminal services session of sort (there is …

"Password Complexity" -bitch to remove.
by Guest Anteaus- 3 replies

One of the things I detest about 2003-on Server is that "Password Complexity" policy which is forced upon you as soon as you load the AD. People who put this policy on obviously hadn't got their brains in-gear that day, as they failed to consider the problems it causes when importing users from an existing server, or when installing a server on a site which ALREADY has a different password policy in-force, and with which this conflicts. Perhaps the daftest aspect is that despite this piece of paranoia there is by default no password-lockout policy, allowing an intruder an infinite number of tries at a password. I would have thought that a default loc…

"Printer cannot be removed. Access is denied"
by Guest Alan Truism- 2 replies

I have a problem with a printer on a Windows 2003 server, running terminal services. Whenever anyone tries to print to it, they get an "access denied" error. Whenever I log on administratively to the server, and try to view the properties of that installed printer I get an access denied error. I can't even delete, rename, or remove the share on that printer. No matter what I try to do I get that error. Even if I logon to the local administrator account. I've restarted the print spooler service and the same thing happens. The printer is called "Plain". I created a new installation on the same server, pointing to the same printer, using the same print driv…

I'm using Windows 2003 SP2 r2 for a print server hosting about 30 net printers. Recently I noticed a document called "Remote Downlevel Document" in the print queue ramdomly showing up on all printer queues, but it won't print anything it just keeps showing up after a user prints to any of the networked printers. I have search the net to find out what it is and I've found everything from that is virus to printer connected locally on the print server via LPT1. We have antivirus installed on the server and all XP clients and none of them show any virus found, nor we have any of the net printers locally connected to the print server. Could you guys help or p…
