Upgrading Window 2000 server to Windows 2003 server
by Guest John- 6 replies

I have a Windows 2000 SP4 server that runs our accounting system. The CFO wants to upgrade the accounting system but this requires a higher version of Windows. How difficult or easy is it to upgrade a Windows 2000 server to Windows 2003? This server just runs the accounting system, no other applications. Should I just replace the server with a server that already has Windows 2003? Thanks, John

Cleanup Utility Installation
by Guest Dave- 0 replies

I am having difficulty installing the cleanup utility on windows server 2008 64 bit standard. When I run msicuu2.exe as administrator I get an error message saying "can not change to destination folder". There does not appear to be anymore error information. I downloaded the file from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 That page seems to suggest that the utility should be supported on the OS. Any ideas?

Patch/application testing procedures & criteria.
by Guest Barkley Bees- 0 replies

For our patch testing process we install our internally approved patches to the lab environment systems (servers and clients). We then follow a basic checklist to see if any post install errors/issues arise - such as application problems and basic functionality. We also verify the all the event logs to for any issues. If no problems are found we then approve these pathes for production deployment. For our servers, we take backup images, using True Image (during our monthly maintenance window), applying any patches so we are able to roll back if any issues arise. I imagine many of you follow a similar process but would like to know what you folks use for…

Zeus is not accessible. You might not have permission to use thisnetwork resource.

We connect to a Win2k3 Fileserver via VPN. We have both Vista and XP machines connecting in. So that users don't have to remember the IP Address we have added an entry to the hosts files of the client machines - giving the server the name Zeus. When accessing Remote Desktop or other services this works fine. However when accessing files shares, \\Zeus we get the following message: "Zeus is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource." If however we enter the IP address of the same machine into the file browser it accesses it no problem. This is happening on all the client machines, so I'm thinking it must be a server issue, b…

RE: Accounts assigned to services Hi All I am in the process of renaming our admin account on the domain and changing the password. Just want to know if there is a quicker way other than popping onto all the servers and seeing if this account is used on any of them to host services. Cheers Baz

rebuilding my w2003k server domain controller...
by Guest NoSpam Man- 3 replies

Hi, I have a need to reinstall windows 2003 server which is my DC. When this is done, I will re-create the domain with the same name as it was before. For the computers/users that log on to this domain, I have noticed before that they have to rejoin the domain, and that means that a new 'user' is created on the client PC. (Under the user directory there is username.001) Is there away to : 1 - Either backup the domain details so that after rebuilding the server, i can just restore the domain details, and the client connect as they did before 2- Have the client PCs connect to new DC without creating a new user OR 3 register the client comp…

Manual Policy Updates
by Guest Kryten- 2 replies

Hi, Windows 2003 Server SP2 When I make a change to the domain policy I notice that my two member servers don't seem to reflect the update in their local security policy until I reboot them. Then the LSP settings show the new values. I try running gpupdate /force from the cmd line on these boxes but no joy. Also I have a number of servers that are standalone, is there any way to refresh their local security policy after modifying it without rebooting? Would appreciate any advice. Thanks, Stuart

by Guest Smurfman- 3 replies

I am trying to find out what domain service is running at 12:06 am and 12:06 pm everyday and is using my domain admin account to login/run. (Windows 2003 AD domain with 2 DCs) I am now being alerted that at these times the account is being locked out, but as a domain admin it really isn't locked out. I thought a replication service but went into AD and was able to replicate between my two DC's. Not sure where to look for this? THanks J

File copy operations and performance problems?
by Guest Edgeman- 0 replies

Hello, I am running on x64 XP with 8 GB of RAM. I have issues copying or moving large files, either from drive to drive or over the network. When this happens my RAM is slowly eaten away until there is none left and the system starts aggressively paging. I googled and found this: http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/29912456/file-copy-operations-and.aspx Which is the same problem, so I know I am not alone. I'm just wondering if A: anyone else on here has experienced this, and B: if there is a solution at all? I should note that neither task manager nor process explorer show my RAM as being full when copying a file, but I have a little system…

by Guest Buttnuts- 1 reply

I am not sure if this is the right group and I appoligize for the cross post but I am really in need of some help. I stepped into a site that needs to upgrade the hardware and software of their current Domain. The hardware is ancient (9+ years old) and nearly completely out of resources. Here is the role of the server OMG It is the PDC, It has Exchange on it (with only a few accounts but it is the 'front end' server for our other main Exchange server - which has all of our accounts on it) It also has ISA 2004 which controls all access to our network - that access includes access to our Web Server with 6 web sites (all public 3 of them with web services applica…

I've Windows XP Pro & Windows Server 2003 installed on dual boot system. I only have one hard disk with partitions. I know that formatting the partition where Server is installed, is the only way to get rid of it. My question is, do I still have registry values for Win Server 2003 left behind?

Question about Server Performance Advisor
by Guest Brian- 0 replies
Hello, I have been using Server Performance Advisor to monitor the servers for adjustments that may need to be made on our 2003 servers. My question is does this "replace" perfomance monitor as far as setting a baseline for server system performance and day-forward monitoring of server performance? I was trying to set up performance counters for specific server roles such as file, print, domain controller, email, database and web server when I came across this utiliy. Should I still go ahead and configure performance logging or is Server Performance Advisor a turn-key solution? Any help, suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated. -- Tha…

Time on compnuter and server - log on problems
by Guest Slam- 2 replies

I have a couple of users who cannot login to Server 2003. When they try logging in, on any workstation on the network, the error message "the current time on the computer and the current time on the network are different..." crops up. Any other user can log in without problem. I therefore assume it is something to do with these users' profiles but I can't work it out. Interestingly, both have been away for a couple of weeks on holidays. I had this with another user, a couple of months ago and ended up giving her a new log-in and profile. I don't want to keep doing that - there has to be a reason and an answer. Any ideas, please? Thanks.

slow shutdown on HP DL380 G3 running w2k3 sp2
by Guest nick clark- 1 reply

Hi , I have 3 DL380 G3's running w2k3 sp2 - these are all fresh installs. All firmware and drivers are patched to date using HP tools etc. These servers take approximately 10 minutes to shutdown during a reboot. Shutdown = no response from ping. I have no error messages, warnings etc in the even logs as these boxes go down. watching the boxes on an IP KVM the screen just goes black for 10 mins until it posts - then after a minute i can rdp onto them. all have 4Gb RAM, either single or dual 3.2 GHz Intel procs, no 3g/boot.ini switch. all other servers NOT DL380 G3 are fine .. i.e. G4's and 5's using the same build. I have also gone through and disab…
