schtasks doesn't run programs with spaces
by Guest Jonathan Miller- 7 replies
I need to use the schtasks.exe to create a new scheduled task. One of the parameters allows you to specify the filename. The file I want to run is in the Program Files folder. I specify the path, the task gets created but will not run! The only way to fix it is to open the properties of the task in the GUI and add double quotes around the whole path! Is there an escape sequence or something I can use in the command line so that the quotes stay on the file name? Here is what I'm doing: schtasks /create /SC DAILY /ST 02:30:00 /TN test /TR "C:\Program Files\Test\Test.exe" /RU SYSTEM As you can see I have double quotes around the path so that the …

Windows scheduler: Running a batch file as another user?
by Guest Andrew Hodgson- 9 replies
Hi, I have an account which is in the users and IIS_WPG group. I would like this account to run a batch file every hour, however, when I schedule the script to run when I am logged in as an account with administrator privileges to run under that user, and when I start the job, it fails. I can see from the audit log that the user is being logged in and out, but it doesn't start. I attempted to run the scheduler logged in as the account I wanted the script to run under, however, it does not give me access. So my question is: What are the minimum permissions I need to grant in order to let this script run as a scheduled job under the limited account? Tha…

Sysvol not replicating, AD not failing over
by Guest swobopio- 3 replies
I have put in a new Domain Controller (newDC) into our network but are having problems with the old Domain Controller (oldDC) replicating sysvol to newDC. The ultimate goal that I'm trying to achieve here is to be able to shut down oldDC and have newDC take over (eventually having oldDC only as a backup). As of right now, the issue lies when I shut down oldDC I start to run into problems with the active directory (such as not being able to edit any users info, it just hangs for a few seconds as if it's still trying to talk to oldDC). ---------------------- Event Viewer Logs: ---------------------- On newDC, I only get two errors (but I think the probl…

by Guest David C- 8 replies

I am running a scheduled task that executes shutdown.exe and it works fine, except that when all is done, it gives the message "It is now safe to turn off your computer" instead of completely shutting off. This does not happen when I do a normal shutdown. I am using the /L and /Y parameters. Can someone help? Thanks. p.s. Windows 2000 Advanced Server running SP4. David

Allowing file share browsing for un-authenticated users
by Guest Nonapeptide@gmail.com- 9 replies
- 553 views
I have a Windows Server 2003 file server in a workgroup environment that needs to allow anyone who plugs into the network to browse its file shares without being prompted for a username and password. Ideally it would behave just like a Windows XP machine that has a file share. A simple UNC path like this: \\ServerName\ should reply with the available file shares to anyone who asks. What is the option to get this behaviour? I can't seem to find the local policy to get this to work. Thanks bunches,

SBS & Terminal Server Question
by Guest Greg Horne- 8 replies
First of all, I program but have to dabble in setting up our server. I need a server to host web sites, and also allow users to remote desktop to the machine and run desktop applications. I am expecting up to 3 concurrent remote desktop users at any given time, max. Currently, I have 2003 SBS with the 5 included CAL's. It appears I am limited to 2 users being able to remote desktop to the server. I think the purpose of this is for remote administration. SBS does not appear to have Terminal Server, software and/or license, I am not sure. Can I get a Terminal Services license for SBS? If so, then is just a matter of me buying Terminal Server lice…

Account lockout in win2k3 server
by Guest cyberdude- 5 replies
I'm a relative newbie to win2k3 server and AD, so bear with me. I have 1 or 2 power users who like to stay logged in for long periods of time. What generally happens is that at some point they logoff/reboot and are then locked out. I have to then go to the server and unlock their account. I have searched technet for an answer to this, but the links/answers they had seemed aimed at password policy (using gpedit.msc) not domain policy. Nothing I've found so far addresses this particular issue. Any help would be appreciated. Tom -- Tom Zucker-Scharff Systems Administrator

CACLS Roaming Documents / Profiles
by Guest Jake- 7 replies
Hi all. I;m hoping you can help me. I just configured an entire Active Directory 2k3 environment and implemented a backup solution using NT backup. Everything is running great, except for the roaming documents. I followed the Microsoft Tech Doc about how to set the permissions properly. When i try to open a user's documents folder on the server, as Administrator, i get an ACCESS DENIED error. This scared me a little, as I run the backups as "Administrator". Researching further, I did a test restore of a user's documents... Low and behold, every one i tried was empty, which means that i am NOT backing them up. I've tried running cacls as follows: …

Hacker locking my accounts
by Guest just bob- 19 replies
Microsoft wizards please help me as I am desperate. Someone continues to lock all my admin accounts. My firewall is working properly (allowing only port 53) so I think the guy is using one of the 120 PC's or another server on my network to read my user database and identify the admin accounts and send a command to lock them. We've got the latest Symantec antivirus corporate edition installed and updated on all the machines and it's supposed to identify spyware, etc. Why is it so easy for this guy to do this? I have downloaded all the high priority updates for all machines, servers and PC's. We've also used the server lockdown tool. Why doesn't this help?…

We moved our data from a Win2k server DC to a another server running Win2k3 and noticed that the target folder location for the My Documents folder is still has the UNC path to the original server and can't be changed. We've looked for any GPO's that could cause this but none are configured. Any ideas on where/how to change this would be helpful. thanks

Windows server 2008 - What theres no tape backup!
by Guest w-cubed- 8 replies
Yes what a shock I sold a new Windpows Server 2008 with a tape unit in it. Only to find no NTBACKUP and the new Backup product just does not do Tape. I have not been seeing this huge change in any press releases I have hunted around and I cannot find an affordable or practical replacement for the LTO4 tape backup unit. What else streams at 120MB/s and stores 1.6TB of data? It needs to be at under $200 a unit and I need at least 30 backup devices to support the backup program policy in place. I am for the first time in 28 years in the computer industry having to source a third party backup tool to backup a server. This is wrong very wrong! I h…

Hi, I'd like to use any "smart" program to discover my computers on the network and get some reports. Everest Professional is very nice product but I need to run it on EVERY computer. I've checked LOGinventory and similar products... Well, my idea is: I have 200 computers on my network and I need to run once per month network discovery tool and collect hardware and software details from computer. Report must include like following: computer name, disk, memory and CPU characteristics, operating system, and all other settings are optional... Please advice what to use for this. p.s. any Microsoft products, like System Center Essentials maybe or...? …

DHCP
by Guest Bob- 10 replies

I am new to Windows Server 2003 and have Static Addresses set up on all of my servers. I have 3 DNS servers running Windows 2000 Server. The rest are all running Windows Server 2003 with Exchange or other various applications. I have read everything I can get my hands on regarding DHCP Client. I believe that I can disable DHCP client on all servers where I am running Static IP addresses, however can not find any information that confirms that as fact. I am getting errors on all of these machines that might indicate a corrupt database however, since these mahines in question are not my DHCP server, and there is no databse in the directory, then I jus…

system freeze very often
by Guest lenny- 14 replies

Hi, Over the last few weeks the system (Dell PowerEdge SC440 Windows Server 2003 for small business server- out of warranty by 3 months!) has started to freeze. The screen freezes with no mouse movement or keyboard input registered. It started just every few days then sometimes twice a day then every few days then once a day and today every 10 minutes or so. I have changed the RAM (After the Health Monitor showed an error with the RAM) and also the LAN card (there wasn't any errors but I thought I should try it) but although they seemed to make a difference it was a red herring and now it is as bad as ever. There are no errors in the log files except …
