WSUS Question - Deploying WSUS to an addtional server
by Guest Saral6978- 0 replies
I have an existing WSUS environment with an established database on a SQL server. How do I go about deploying WSUS to a new server in the existing environment. Do I just run the installation and I will just be prompted to choose an existing database? The WSUS env that is running now was something set up before I got here and I'm not familiar with the setup process as I personally haven't implemented it before. Thanks for any help - Hope this is in the right area - I didn't see a WSUS thread. Sara

Security Log Question & Hotfix?
by Guest Daniel P. Cayea- 9 replies

I have this peculiar problem with my security log on my domain controller. I've set up my security log to overwrite events as needed, but the size is large enough that it will not overwrite events unless they are like two weeks plus old. Problem is, every time I log onto my server I get the "Security Log is full" message. I go into the event viewer and change the atributes of the log, and it gets set back to "Do not overwrite". I remember a while back there was a hotfix to fix this, can anyone remember it or help me with this issue? Thanks Dan

Password Reminders
by Guest JCace- 3 replies

Helllo I have started at a new job this week and the organisation is suffering some password issues. They already have a GPO password policy in place, with expiry set to 30 days and the reminder period set to 7 days. The issue seems to be that the password reminder will flash up sating the password will expire in 1 day; however the users tend to ignore this, assuming that they can change their passwords tomorrow. What seems to be happening, is that their password will actually expire that day, typically at around 11 am. This is causing a high volume of calls to the service desk and a lot of work for the service desk operators to unlock and reset p…

Software restriction policy doesn't restrict
by Guest futro08@gmail.com- 0 replies

I'm testing a software restriction policy but for some reason it doesn't restrict user as expected. I've created an OU for terminal server and linked a group policy. In the user section I have created a path rule under "User Configuration \Windows Settings\Security Settings\Software Restrictions\Additional Rules" restricting software from running on path "C:\test". So far this works as expected, I can't run for example .exe files from that folder. However, if I try to run a help file (.hlp) which is in the list of designated file types, the restriction does not apply and I'm able to run it. It seems that the designated file types list doesn't work. Any hi…

Add a new printer

New to networking and although I’ve installed printers to workstations, I’ve never installed a new printer to a server. I only know that an IP address is to be reserved throught DHCP for the new printer if the printer software does not scan the network and find an unused address. If there is a simple how to with pictures I would appreciate it. Working with Server 2003

sell domain name "yonata.com"
by Guest maxxue7788- 0 replies

Dear Sir/Madam$B!$(B We are an IT company who own the above domain name. We think your company may be interested to use this domain name for promotion of your own brand $B!H(BYONATA$B!I(B. We understand that you are using obleasyonata.com for your website, but it would be more desirable to use YONATA.COM Studies show that there are many advantages using this shorter and more direct domain name: 1. $B!H(BYONATA$B!I(B itself is the brand name of your products. There will be direct connection between the website and your brand name. Successful examples are http://www.ibm.com, http://www.bmw.com, http://www.sony.com, etc. 2. Easy to memorize the…

How many Domain Controllers should I have?
by Guest humour- 3 replies
A few questions about domain controllers. I have 3 servers in my network, 2 are domain controllers - 1 is 2003 the other is 2000. q1) Is it good to have more than one domain controller? q2) I recently restarted one of my servers, several of my users machines got a message the "trust relationship has been broken" << something similar. I think this is indicating one of my servers is not properly authenticating users. Does this sound reasonable? q3) My 2003 server has been starting to fail, I bought a new one from Dell but I didnt make it a domain controller... should I make it a domain controller? If so why? Will it slow the server down? …

Schtasks' create vs. change
by Guest Mr Troy- 5 replies

I have a task that needs to be run from time to time on twenty servers. The tasks are setup to run "once." I'd like to use schtasks to automate the tasks. The wall I'm hitting is that you cannot change a run "once" task. I've tried changing the task to run monthly, but then, even if I set the st,sd,ed, nothing happens. My "Change:" schtasks /change /tn "Auto Shutdown" /s dcmember1 /st 14:50:00 /sd 01/16/2008 /ed 01/17/2008 /enable Anyone have any ideas on how to get around that? To try and get around it, I thought, hey I'll use "Create" and have it delete the file. I think that would work, but is there a way to kick it out to a log file rather t…

I am running Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition and I am unable to change the password on the administrator account. Actually, I am unable to reset any users' password in AD. I right click on the user account, select reset password, type in the new password, hit enter, and I get the following AD error message: "Windows cannot complete the password change for Administrator because: Windows cannot find the network path. Verify that the network path is correct and the destination computer is not busy or turned off. If Windows still cannot find the network path, contact your network administrator." Note. I am at the local machine trying to do t…

Windows could not be started as configured
by Guest Chris S- 3 replies

I have just recently installed SP2 on a Windows 2003 Server and after reboot I get a pop up that states the following: Service Control Manager: Windows could not be started as configured. A previous working configuration was used instead. I have found the Microsoft KB article on this and it just tells you how to prevent the popup from coming back again. But...I want to know if this has caused some unforeseen problems now or in the future. Also, from what I have read...it seems as if Windows used the last known good in this case...if so...will this have any adverse affects on this domain controller? How can I tell SP2 has been applied successfully? I …

Installing/upgrading on different computer-2003 SBS
by Guest Bill- 6 replies

Our small non-profit is ready to upgrade from Windows 2000 Small Business Server to 2003 Small Business Server. However, we want to do it on a DIFFERENT computer. We've purchased a faster computer, we plan to install 2003 Small Business Server on it, and retire/reformat the current/old one. Are there instructions on how to upgrade when using a different computer? The upgrade instructions I've found seem to be to upgrade/install on the same computer. We want to transfer the domain controller to the new computer/installation. We want to backup the Exchange Server and restore it to the new computer, or transfer the data somehow. And whatever else needs t…

Hi, After I have upgrade my Windows 2003 x64 R2 server from 1 Dual Core Opteron to 2 Dual Core Opteron, (and upgraded from 4 to 12Gb of RAM) I'm suffering freezing issues during intensive calculations. Like processing an SSSAS OLAP Cube. once the calculation process is done or is in a less intensive part of the process, I can get the control again. before the upgrade I can do something on the server even when the CPU is at 100% of usage. Any idea? Thanks. Jerome.

DHCP Handing out IPs on Wrong Network
by Guest Kbalz- 6 replies

We have one DHCP Server, which is also our Primary Domain Controller. This is also our Primary DNS Server. It is running Windows 2003 x64 R2 SP2. Our reserved range of IPs run from 192.168.1.1 - x.x.x.80. DHCP is configured to hand out ranges from x.x.x.81 - x.x.x.200. All of our clients are running Windows XP Pro, SP2 (some are on SP1 still, but very few). We have about 100 client machines. Laptops are very prone (I'd say, 80% of the time) to this: The laptop will leave our network (salesman takes a business trip) for a week or two, when he or she returns, the laptop is assigned a 192.168.2.1xx IP address. We have a 192.168.2.xxx network, but it is phy…

Windows Server 2003 VM joining a domain RPC fails
by Guest spectreoflight- 5 replies

Hello, I have a test machine that I am setting up to things like SMS and Sharepoint. I have installed VMWare Server and created a virtual machine of Windows Server 2003 RC2. I can connect to the internet and download updates through its Bridged networking for it but I can not join a domain from the virtual machine. I get the following error, "The following error occured attempting to join the domain "xxxxxx": The remote procedure call failed and did not execute" From what I can tell I don't think that it is a VMWare issue but something to do with windows network. There any way to trouble shoot why I am getting this? I don't notice anything in the Logs about this …

Controller/Driver error and Event ID 11
by Guest Bill Clark- 0 replies
Running into an issue with BE11d and my server/bus adapter setup. The backup "runs" but then fails on verification with an I/O error. Upon further examination I see a System Event with the following: Source: Lsi_scsi, Event ID: 11, Desription: "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\RaidPort1". From what I gather there is something wrong with the adapter/driver combination. The adapter is an HP SC11Xe Host Bus Adapter (HP# 412911-B21) that I purchased separately from the DL380-G5 server it resides in. The server came with the P400 Array that controls the internal drives. Running Windows 2003 Server with Sp2 and all updates. I have all …

Mount point to remote share
by Guest DY- 0 replies

We are experiencing high drive activity on a server that is currently configured with only RAID 1. The application causing the activity does not allow redirect to a remote share, so I am stuck. I wish to avoid migrating the application altogether. I have tried using a simple mapped drive, which did not work. I have also tried using the linkd.exe utility, which I believe works for local folders but not remote shares. Is there a way of creating a folder on this server that is mapped to a remote share with an attached drive array? Thanks!

Adding DC in second AD 2003 site not creating automatic replicationto all DCs?
by Guest Rob Gordon- 5 replies

The current Active Directory domain topology of my native Windows 3003 R2 Server (with all patches applied), looks like the following: DC1: Native Win2K3 R2 (Global Catalog and AD-integrated DNS server) DC2: Native Win2K3 R2 (Global Catalog and AD-integrated DNS server) DC3: Native Win2K3 R2 (non-Global Catalog, legacy Certificate Server) The FSMO roles have all been split between DC1 and DC2. I have recently added a site (call it Second-Site)to our domain, and am in process of adding a DC to that site, to act as a local GC since it will be across a WAN connection from the default First-Site. Call it DC4. When I do a dcpromo on this server, it goes th…

Veritas backup exec 10

Quick question... I ran into this setup and it seems really weird to me. A company has a Dell Powervault 114T single drive unit that runs SuperDLT Tape 1's. For some reason they are bening asked during backup to switch tapes. The funny thing is that it asks right at 160 which should be the uncompressed size of the tape right? Compression should get us well above 300 gig. I have a Dell powervault 110T at work that runs the same tapes and I regularlily even get more than 320 out of a single tape. Besides telling the job to compress are there other settings somewhere else to turn this on? THanks
