Scheduled backups fail to start
by Guest Frances Butcher- 10 replies
We have been using Win Backup on Win Svr 2003 for at least 18months now and suddenly it is refusing to work. If I run a manual backup it backs up no problem. However the scheduled backups do not start. No log is generated in the backup GUI and the very few messages which appear in the event viewer do not seem applicable. I have rebooted the server and also deleted and recreated all the scheduled tasks and media but it has made no difference. - The only clue I have is that if I select properties on any of the tasks then the following error appears: >General page initialization failed. The specific error is: 0x80090016:keyset does not exist. An error has o…

Using diskpart to assign drive letter
by Guest Frank Pietersen- 1 reply
Hi there, The following situation: With the iscsi initiator I will connect a drive on a SAN to my server. Next I would like to connect a drive letter to that volume. With iscsicli sessionlist I can find the disk number. Then i use the following script to find the volume number with diskpart select disk x (number of disk found with iscsicli sessionlist) detail disk (to find the volumenumber) After that I would like to assign a driveletter to the disk with the following script: select disk x select volume x (found with the previous script) assign letter=G But as you probably know (see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937252) the volumenumbers will c…

Time Zone Configuration Issues
by Guest Demerson- 0 replies

Hello, folks. I've been researching on a script to enable the daylight savings configuration and synchronize the system time of all machines in the domain with one of the DCs (PDC emulator). The .vbs script worked fine on all tests and we finally decided to apply it through a GPO to the domain. First we manually did all the servers and double checked whether the summer times were all correct. Then we applied the GPO. It did enable the daylight option on the stations and also updated the time. Thats when the problems begun. We are normally GMT -3. With daylight savings, we turn to GMT -2. Thing is, the machines can only get GMT -3 from the serv…

Forcing user to take ownership of home directorys.
by Guest TJ_2006- 0 replies
Hi, I am using windows server 2003 R2 release and i am using it to create logs of directory sizes, however the system uses the owner as a propose to directory name, the majority of directorys and contents are owned by the domain admin, this is due to the permission being reset over time as servers have been migrated/updated, i use xcacls to do this, basically as far as i can work out using xcacls, i can grant users the right's to take ownership but not actually force them to have ownership and my findings correct is there an alternative tool to achieve this if this is the case. Thanks in advance regards James

Blocked Files
by Guest Rustom- 3 replies

I have a generic issue with my Windows Server 2003 system. I have obtained a zip file and everytime I attempt to unzip the file, Windows Blocks the setup.exe file. The message states right click the file and check unblock, however the setup.exe file dissappears when the all the files are unzipped, therefore, I cannot right click it. How do I turn this annoying blocker off?

NT Backup fails to start automatically
by Guest Nandan- 2 replies
Hi, NTBACKUP fails to start automatically when I schedule a job. The only way I am able to start it is by typing " control sched taks" in RUN. There also ,no schedules start up,the only way to backup is through selecting" RUN NOW". Another problem I faced is that I cant remove a job I had scheduled .when i click on the job in the calendar,it says"unnamed file contains an invalid path".It 's because no name has been set for the job.I dont know how a job can be scheduled without giving it a name but that's exactly wat's happening here.. Would appreciate it if you could help me out. Regards, Nandan

Licensing Issues
by Guest Steve- 4 replies
This is the history on this debacle: * We have an existing server that we are concerned may be on its last legs. * Rather than waiting for it to die, we are pre-emptively attempting to recreate exactly what we currently have as far as software (both Windows and Applications) goes but on a different machine. * Once this is done and has proved stable, we will wipe the old server and use it as a backup. We have been told that this is permitted under the Microsoft licensing as long as it is a fall back position only and not being used to "cheat" and create two servers. That is all we are trying to do * The server we are pre-emptively replacing had Windows server 2…

Mapped shared folder does not stable
by Guest joeau- 2 replies

I setup a new Win2003 Server with AD and all client computers ( XP and Win98 ) can join the domain successfully. I try two ways to map shared folder: 1. using the Windows Explorer on client computer, 2. using logon script. The shared folders map to the client computers are not stable, sometime they can connect to the server but sometime they can't (no reaction when I click the mapped drive). How's to fix it? Thanks, Joe.

What do I do with all these user CALs?
by Guest Thomas H- 4 replies
So we just bought a few hundred user CALs for my new Server 2003 network, what do I do with them? I read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824196 , which seems to be saying not to run the License service at all. The network I'm building is native server 2003, minimum client is Windows XP. I assume I still change each servers' licensing mode to per-user, and put in the total amount of user CALs we bought- but what's next? Do I do anything with XP, or with their user account in Active Directory? Or do I just put the user CALs in the safe and that's it? Thanks!

WINS Server - Is it necessary?
by Guest Saral6978- 3 replies
I have a full Windows XP/Windows 2003/Exch 2003 network - I will be putting in a new domain controller and removing 2 existing ones. One of them has WINS installed. I'm guessing since I'm fully in Native mode that I do not need to install WINS on this new server since all requests will be using DNS, correct, and replication will still occur between my new DC and my DCs at 2 other locations?

Hello, I've setup an FTP server on Server 2003 SP2. I wanted to lockdown what IP addresses connect to it, so I setup the FTP server to deny access to all IP addresses except 3 in the list of exclusions. Only 1 of those IP addresses can connect to the server. Is there something I missed? Thank you in advance. Andy

Upgrading from Windows Server 2K to 2003 Standard Server
by Guest nikunj.it@gmail.com- 0 replies

Hi, I am new to installation and managing of server. I got Windows 2000 Server running terminal services. It is configured well and working fine. I want to upgrade it to Windows Server 2003. My concern is creating ISO image of this current 2000 server. I want to create ISO/ Bootable CD or DVD that hold all information about server (i.e. 2000 Server Installation Files, Drivers, Data, Server Configuration such as Active Directory etc., Current Installed Softwares etc...). That means everything on the server must be backed up and restore into CDs or DVDs. Because if I will get any problem for installation of 2003 Server, so I can run those CDs or DVDs and set ser…

Small Business Server - WMI issues
by Guest Alex_ACS- 1 reply

Here's the story. 4 different customers, 4 different servers. 3 of them use Small Business Server, one uses Enterprise R2. I use a free asset management/help desk/reporting system on all of them which communicates using the WMI protocol, which we all know runs on TCP135. The problem is that on all three of the SBS servers, the asset management system doesn't want to communicate with HALF the computers on each network. It recognizes them, authenticates with them using a domain admin account, and roughly half of them on each network just won't talk. I've tried adjusting WMI Control and DCOM Config on the "unknown" machines that it won't communicate with, net…

Never leave the install CD in the drive!
by Guest Deane- 2 replies
A friend (I swear, this is NOT about me...) has Windows Small Business Server 2003. He has two drives, and mirrors them through Windows. He calls me -- "Yeah, the power went out, and when the server came up, there was this black screen that said I had to push a key, then these other blue screens that had me push all these other others, and now it tells me that the install will take 39 more minutes..." To my horror, I realize that he (1) left the Windows install CD in the drive, (2) when the power came on he confirmed that he wanted to boot from the CD, then he (3) clicked a sequence of keys to start Windows reinstalling. I haven't gone over there yet, so…

Windows 2003 server restarts instead of shutting down
by Guest ellenda@gmail.com- 0 replies

I wanted to post this in case anyone else ever ran into the problem I had today. I have a HP DL360G5 server with Windows 2003 SP1 that would restart instead of shutting down. Searched the HP boards and discovered it was a NIC driver issue. Upgraded the server NIC Driver "HP NC-Series Multifunction Driver" to the latest version 3.4.10.0 to resolve the issue. A link to the HP support forum I found: http://forums12.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.... It also affects DL380G5's according to the forum. Thanks, Ellen

2003 Terminal Services - Bandwidth
by Guest Victor- 1 reply
How much bandwidth is required per user for a terminal services connection? For example, if we have a 1.5 Mb T1 coming in, and I remote desktop into the server from home (cable internet, if it makes a difference), how much of that T1 am I using for my session? Basically, we're trying to figure out how many concurrent outside connections we can support at a time. Thanks!

In vista.. if you goto start.. run.. notepad.. then do a file open.. i can goto computer and see all the mapped drive letters for our 2003 domain (which are mapped at login via a script, this script is forced to vista machines via running as limitted user technique via task scheduler commands).. If i open other 3rd party apps.. like installshield 12.. then try the open command.. i only see drives which are mapped that are persistent.. ie: these other mappings are mapped as not persistent at login.. I'm not sure why this is the case... I'm using this in a VBscript: On Error Resume Next Set objNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network") objNetwork.MapNet…
