I've taken a look at http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsVista/en/library/5ae8da2a-878e-48db-a3c1-4be6ac7cf7631033.mspx?mfr=true But i'm a little confused here.. do i need to copy admx files out to our 2003 R2 server? If so.. i'm not sure from where i am copying them either... On a vista client.. logged in as domain admin.. do i simply run gpedit.msc and edit the "vista workstation" policy and this will somehow apply to all Vista boxes in our domain? Is there a way to use gpmc.msc and create vista policies? When i run gpmc.msc from the vista box.. it says it is version 1.02 c 2004... Shouldnt it be version 2.0? Thanks

I'm interested in getting WHS. I'm using the 120 day trial and it is working seamlessly with my Vista Ultimate PC. I had no problem using WS2003 with XP, but Vista doesn't want to play nice with it.

How to setup a recycle bin for network drive?
by Guest Ray- 6 replies
As mentioned in the title, if I am using Windows 2003 Server, the client deleted something at the netwok drive which is mapped from the server side, no matter for the client or the server side, it is impossible to recover easily! We may need 3rd party data recovery ssoftware to accomplish. If u were lucky, u may recover the data from the shadow copy, but which may not be the most updated or even the data would not be existed due to it was just a scheduled task to do the backup! So, I would feel interest to setup a recycle bin for the network drive. Suppose we can recover from the recycle bin at the server side with one click. Its a million times bettere…

Shared networked printer becomes "unshared" at random intervals?
by Guest Rob Gordon- 1 reply

I have about a dozen networked printers all sharing off a Windows 2003 R2 with SP2 print server. The problem I'm having is that one of these printer tends to occasionally get "knocked off" of being shared for network printing (i.e. under properties it no longer appears as Shared), and I have to manually set it to be shared again. Three of the printers on the print server are the exact same make and model and are all using the same printer driver, and yet only one of them becomes "unshared". Any ideas what might be causing the printer to become unshared? I am the only Print Operator in the company, so I don't believe this is something that's being …

Hi Pros, I been trying to rename the current DC, from WORLDGROUPC to WORLDGROUPC by using Netdom. WORLDGROUP is the old DC with Windows NT 4.0 and WORLDGROUPC is Windows server 2003 we are going to replace the Old server to the new one, therefore, we need to change the NEW server(WORLDGROUPC) to the name of the OLD server(WORLDGROUP). the thing is, I have disconnected the NEW DC from the network when i tried rename it, so that it won't crashes with the OLD DC (which is still running) in the network. so, now the DC (WORLDGROUPC) is standalone, doesn't connect to any network, and i want to change the DC name to WORLDGROUP but in the command Prompt: >…

Hi all. It would be fab if you could help me please! I need to run 2 ftp sites on the same server (windows server 2003). I've got the first one using port 21, but need the second ftp site to use a different port I think (unless there's a way to get 2 ftp sites working on port 21? binding?). so, for my second ftp site I am using port 8001. it works ok with my ftp client with the windows firewall off, but when I turn it on and add port 8001 to it my ftp client doesn't want to connect any more. I've noticed that my ftp client is actually connecting using port 8001 but then switches to an arbiutary port number afterwards when finishing the connection. This…

by Guest Jim in Cleveland- 1 reply

I have a Dell 2850, secondary domain controller, running server 2003 w/sp2. I looked in the event log under apps and noticed that the server is generating the following error every 5 or so minutes, Event ID: 1053 Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.). Group Policy processing aborted. When I click on ADUC, I get the following error msg: Naming information cannot be located because: The network path was not found. Contact your system administrator to verify that your domain is properly configured and is currently online. I can remote into this server with no problem. I can …

Win2003R2 - copied exe files are blocked by default
by Guest Saral6978- 0 replies
I just installed Win2003R2 on a server. I copied a service pack from one location on a different server to my new server and the only way I can install it is if I right-click on the exe, go to properties, and specifically click the "unblock" button. I realize that this is a new security feature, and it appears to be the default setting, but if I wanted, how is this feature turned off? After my server was configured, a screen came up about updating the server and such, and I thought I caught something about blocking ports, etc. I closed the window before really reading it thoroughly. Thanks! Sara

Hello I’m currently running Server 2003 R2 for my home based business and using roaming profiles. My work stations are running Windows XP pro and everything has worked great for the last three years. I have purchase a new computer and it running Windows Vista ultimate. I have added the Vista machine to the domain and have noticed that user profiles are not loading to the Vista work station. I did a little research on the net and it seems that XP profiles are not compatible with Vista profiles. I have noticed that I have two profiles for each user , the old XP profile and the new Visa profile .V2 After a little more research it seems that I need to …

Is it possible to add a registry setting to the ntuser.dat, which is stored in the default user profile (Netlogon share) without loading the profile to a workstation and then back up to the Netlogon share? In other words, is there an editor that can open the ntuser.dat and allow me to make a registry modification so that it will apply to all new users? TIA

Printer servers - report usage
by Guest Eric Baines- 4 replies
We have a number of windows print servers. For environmental reasons, I'd like to be be able to produce reports that show how much usage people are making of printers. Can anyone suggest any applications that will help me do this? Ideally, the data would be captured into a SQL database, and I could then produce intranet reports showing how many prints and how many pages each person and each printer has done over a set period. If it could show things like whether it is using high or low ink settings, double sided or single sided etc, that would be a bonus, but I'm less concerned about that. Any ideas?

75 GB limit in Windows Server 2003 R2
by Guest Harold Naparst- 15 replies

What is the meaning of the 75 GB storage limit in Windows Server 2003 R2? Does that mean that the sum of the whole company's mail in Exchange, files, etc cannot exceed 75 GB? Seems absurd. An average user has about 5 GB of mail, so this would mean that if the company exceeds 15 people, we can't use this product or would need to buy more servers. Harold

RDP Fails - No Error message
by Guest sp2nue@gmail.com- 0 replies

Folks, I am having a very strange problem with Win 2003 server and RDP. RDP will work normally without problem for a few days, and all of a sudden it will just stop working without any logging or error messages. The symptom is that when a client tries to connect to the server, the normal prompts are presented on the client, and when it tries to establish the connection, the client just disappears without an error. Normally, the client would bring up the window and a session would start, but in this case, it just dies. When this happens, no one can connect and my only option to re-enable it is to reboot the server, which is not a very elegant solution and al…

2003R2 Enterprise Minimum C:Drive Size Question
by Guest EDAWG- 2 replies
Due to some technical/political issues at my work I am being forced to install 2003 R2 on an IBM blade configuration(HS21) that doesn't come with hot swappable drives. In an effort to minimize the impact of losing a drive I am considering going with solid state drives, as they are billed as 3X more reliable. My question is this...The max drive size for solid state on the blades right now is 16GB. I can get two and set them up as RAID1, but I am nervous about total drive space. The apps and its data will live no a SAN so I am only installing the OS, but do you think this is cutting it too close with space? My other option is to use 73GB SAS non hot swa…

Event Log Registry Values
by Guest Joe- 2 replies

This is a new post, as I did not receive any responses from an earlier post. I will try to ask the question in a better way. I have two Win2K3 servers that I need to increase the size of the App and Sys logs in the Event Viewer. A change in the size in the properties box doesn't produce any errors, but the change is lost as soon as I click 'OK'. I have also made the change in the registry at HKLM/system/CurrentControlSet/Services/EventLog The change is accepted and shows up correctly in the Event Log properties page, but upon rebooting the server the values are changed back to default. Can anyone tell me what would be changing these values? I have n…
