Automated System Recovery and USB Drive
by Guest Chowsman- 1 reply

I reviewed several different documents concerning the ASR feature. So once you implemented ASR you should have a floppy disk and a "bkf" file (on the local disk). My question is this? Can I copy the "bkf" to a USB drive for safe keeping? Let's say I have a server with one hard drive and the drive craps out, well the "bkf" file would be gone for good. Any suggestions from anyone? Thanks, Dennis

WSS V3 "View Sites and Workspaces" - problem with upgrade from V2

Hello I have upgraded from WSS V2 to WSS V3 and all is fine except: In WSS V2 "View Sites and Workspaces" refers to _layouts/1033/mngsubwebs.aspx?view=sites In WSS V3 "View Sites and Workspaces" refers to _layouts/viewlsts.aspx?showsites=1 If a user with Full Control logs in, all of the old links to "View Sites and Workspaces" still work fine. But Readers/Contributors are rejected. Why is this?

Manage other servers from Web Server 2008
by Guest Wojciech Kowasz- 3 replies

Hello all, Recently we've added a brand new Windows Web Server 2008 to our network. We have a few other server running Windows Server 2003 and therefore I'd like to ask: is there any way to remotely manage these servers from Web 2008? We use Remote Desktop for administration, I want to be able to e.g. do some changes in Active Directory from Web 2008, but there is no dsa.msc snap-in. The only solution for now is to log on directly to the DC or other server with Adminpak installed. In other words, can I install some kind of Remote Server Administration Tools, but for 2008, not for Vista? Thank you in advance. Best regards, Wojciech Kowasz

One of our users is running Win XP, Sp2 and intermittently getting this error in their System event log: >>>> Event ID: 40690 Type: Warning Usre: N/A Source: LSASRV Category: SPNEGO (Negotiator) Description: The Security System detected an attempted downgrade attack for server cifs/<servername>.<domainname>.net. The failure code from authentication protocol Kerberos was "The user account has been automatically locked because too many invalid logon attempts or password change attempts have been requested. >>> This happens while the user is logged on to their box so I think the description is not fully accurate. Mobile device that capable of managing servers
by Guest C C- 4 replies

Hello. Sorry if this is not the right newsgroup but I'm looking for a mobile device that is capable of basic server management. I have a Palm One PDA which I no longer use because the touch screen calibration is way off. I have had replaced by Palm One four times within the past 11 months. Now that my extended warranty is done, I will not buy a Palm One device anymore. With this, when it was still useable, I can connect it to the Internet via Bluetooth to my wireless phone and VPN over to our LAN at work and then use a VNC client for the Palm to control my desktop at work and manage servers in our domain. So I'm looking to replace my phone/PDA with a si…

Ntback slow after SP2 and .Net 3.5 updated
by Guest Mac- 0 replies

About little over a week ago we updated our backup/file server. We use ntback to perform a daily backup of local files and some network files. Before the update to SP2 and .Net 3.5 the backup took about 5-6 hours now they take over 24 hours. I am using the latest driver for my tape drive (4.3.33.0) as per Windows updates and the manufacture Quantum SDLT 320 Tape Drive. I have ran a cleaning tape through it an have tried new tapes too. The backup job consists of 5 SDLT tapes, one for each day from Monday to Friday. Here the job summary: Normal backup. Summary log. Do not verify. Use hardware compression. Do not restrict access to owner or administ…

Upgrading recognition

Okay, I have a few questions and hopefully I can explain it clear enough for you guys to follow me. Basically I'm upgrading an NT 4.0 domain to 2003. There's a PDC and a BDC. The original domain name is something like "CW-PS-CTRL" Now, when I upgraded, the systems to 2003 using the install disk, the domain name became "CW-PS-CTRL.CW.com" Basically all the computers hooked up logged into the domain fine after this upgrade. The XP machines even renamed themselves from belonging to CW-PS-CTRL to belonging to CW-PS-CTRL.CW.com NoW what I did after was take the 2003 upgrades, image them and then stored them away on similar hardware for test purposes. …

by Guest Metlmrk- 1 reply

I have just installed POP3 on a stand alone web server(not a domain controller/no AD). To test it. I made a domain on the pop3 virtual server "testdomain" one mailbox "testuser" the password is "password" and had the system automatically create an associated user. Now when I configure outlook and press test the settings it finds the smtp server and the pop3 server and sends a test e-mail I then get a "Network logon" box from "testdomain" but it will not accept the "testuser" and "password" ? and wont allow me to log on. Everythong else appears to work properly. the mailbox recieves the test e-mail but I cannot retrieve it. I would appreciate any help…

Is there a way to keep remote desktop from moving all of my desktop icons? My laptop with Vista has a much smaller resolution than my desktop PC with Vista. When I access my workstation from home, many of the icons are moved. Is there any thing I can do to save the locations and restore them when I return? Any ideas would be appreciated.

WS2008 Backup Applet
by Guest Jeff Vandervoort- 3 replies
I have a small backup (2 specific folders) that I do with NTBACKUP in WS2003. I understand that NTBACKUP is replaced in WS2008 with a backup applet that is more like Vista's backup applet...with less granular backup selections than NTBACKUP. Anyone know if the new backup applet allows me to select specific folders for backup? -- Jeff Vandervoort JRVsystems http://www.jrvsystems.com

Migrating "up" from XP Pro
by Guest Gary Richtmeyer- 7 replies

I work with a small business that has a PC (Dell Optiplex 320, SATA, no raid) running Win XP Pro which is used to simply hold files that are shared among their 8 users in a simple workgroup. It's a pretty straight-forward file sharing environment; they're even using the simple file sharing technique. However, their business is growing and they will soon have 13 users, which exceeds XP Pro's 10-user limit, so they will need to upgrade to a Windows server environment. (Linux and other non-Windows OSes are not an option.) My challenge is that I'm not very familiar with the Windows Server arena other than casual reading of various announcements and the …

Gosted Drive gets NTOSKRNL.EXE Blue screen on boot
by Guest Jeff Gross- 4 replies

Hi, I have a customer with a DC running windows 2000 advanced server. It's an older Pentium 3 rack mount server. Runs great, but the drives (mirrored) are getting noisy and it seems time to replace the drives. I ghosted the old maxtor 40 gig drive onto a new Seagate barracuda 60 gig drive. It booted beautifully the first time on the new drive, then I saw something about a hardware update or something, and then when I shut down and re-booted, I got the ntoskrnl.exe missing error. I guess it has something to do with the system recognizing the new drive hardware and making a change. So I had to put the old mirror pair back in for now. What the heck is going…
