logoff problem
by Guest Will Sellers- 3 replies

When a user logs off it takes an abnormally long time. prior to the following changes logging off was not an issue: We use a mandatory profile which was stored on server A. We decided to decommission Server A because Server B is a new server. Replication of AD works fine Server A and Server B are assigning IP's the scope is split between the two servers Today I created a profile folder on server B In AD, I changed the profile path for users to point to server B When a user logson they get the desktop defined in the mandatory profile. When they logoff it takes forever to save personal settings. What am I missing? Should I have created the profile via the no…

Making domain users local admins
by Guest Laphan- 9 replies

Hi All I had a problem whereby the teachers couldn't use their home internet on their 'domain-linked' laptops because of the limited access that they get. Didn't want to make them part of the domain admins groups so somebody suggested that I add the domain users group (which they are part of) to the laptop's local admins (ie via Computer Management / Users&Groups/ Groups/ Admins. Is this OK to do? They seem to be able to get to the TCP/IP bit now, but what other 'doors' have I opened to the blessed teachers by doing this? Can they install/uninstall software now??? Thanks Laphan

Re: EntDrv52 related error. http://rorymccaw.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!2C4CD58BB2826E21!143.entry I also copied the post below to speed you along. I've looked for a fix for a long time. the formus link below doesn't work any longer but the fix does. I copied my file from another 2k3 server we had here. "December 15 ePO v 3.5.0 on Servers upgraded from Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2003 Do you work with ePO v 3.5.0 in an environment where you have or are upgrading your operating system from Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2003? If you do and you use MOM 2005, you might want to create a rule to alert you to a know issue. See http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/v…

I have a backup tape that was written with Veritas backup exec. The on tape catalog has been passworded (and the password was set up incorrectly, so I don't know what it is). Researching told me that Veritas uses MTF format, so NTBackup should (in theory) read the tape. I can get NTbackup to catalog the tape, no problem, but when it comes to restoring, approx on third of the file is restored. NTbackup either then stalls and does nothing, or claims it has successfully completed the restore. 1) As the tape formats compatible? Since the tape catalogs, I assume they should be. 2) why does NTbackup only restore 1/3 of the file. 3) How do I get my resto…

I'm doing a domain migration and need to move file shares that are current sitting on a file server off to a new file server in a new domain. I suppose I need to move the AD user accounts from the existing domain first with the SID history option? Do I then robocopy entire shares along with permissions to the new server? would this retain everything with no user access issues? thanks

Ist there a log of scandisk?
by Guest Johann Maar- 1 reply
Hi everybody, I wanted to check the file systems of my Windows 2003 server during the weekend and therefore activated scandisk tasks which would have been run after reboot. I set a reboot task to sunday and - now where can I see whether the scandisks were performed and what were the results? I cannot find anything in the event manager nor as a .log file. Is there any kind of log file? At a server I of course cannot sit in front of it and watch the results when scandisk runs... Best regards, Johann

ntbackup batch file for unattended tape backup/overwrite
by Guest David P. Lurie- 6 replies
W2K3 Standard How can ntbackup be run from the command line in a batch file to overwrite an existing tape in a DAT drive when the tape name is unknown, and will change from day to day? The GUI version will ask whether to use an existing tape in the drive, and then whether to overwrite. None of the ntbackup command line switches explicitly address that issue, but I thought that /P "4mm DDS" might work, i.e. ntbackup backup "@filename.bks" /J "job name" /P "4mm DDS" ... Unfortunately, am currently about 1 hour into a 68GB backup/verify, so can't test it yet. Thanks

SmartCard logon
by Guest Stefan E.- 0 replies

Anyone who can point me to some guidelines for setting up smartcard logon in a native Microsoft environment? Have a Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2 and a XP SP2 PC. Have added Microsoft CA, added templates for Enrollment Agent, SmartCard User and SmartCard logon. Did the procedure for Issuing a SmartCard and everything but when trying to use it on the XP client the error "The system could not log you on. Your credentials could not be verified" appears. As I understand the domain controller is missing a certificat. How do I issue one and how can it support SmartCard Logon?

Page file
by Guest Dave Mc- 2 replies

I'm a little confused about setting up/use of the page file. I have a server with one hard drive split into C and D. It appears I can put a page file on both partitions if I want to. If I do, are they both used as needed ? What I really need to do is free up some space on C so I was going to set C page file to none and create it on D. I know I won't get a memory dump if needed but I don't care about that. Second question--Are there reliable products that will make the whole drive just C ? I have nothing on D I care about.

We are setting up our new environment with our hosting providers. We have a Quad Core Windows 2003 Server with 12 GB RAM We have a Load balancer with 2 web servers and a database server. The website and the code are stored on a SAN. The problem we are facing is that the app pool takes very long to load > 20sec We have another dual core windows 2003 server where it loads in 5 secs. This is a 64bit database server at our current hosting provider. we noticed that the ASP.NET Web site takes really long to load. When comparing it with load tests we did on our current server it loaded in under 5 secs. To time the load, I recycle the application pool and …

OEM server 2003 license, motherboard replacement
by Guest Matt Mucklo- 1 reply

Question on the OEM license for Server 2003. Is it possible to change the motherboard on a computer running OEM Server 2003 Standard without violating the license terms? I understand a reinstall of the O/S might be necessary, and that's ok. Right now the original motherboard may be the source of compatibility problems with the software trying to be run on the machine, and changing the motherboard is something I'm looking into. Given this software cost $700 it would be unpleasant if Microsoft forbade this, given it's a small business. However I need to know if they allow it or not. Also there are TS Cals associated with the machine. Would those be …

Limited connection to server
by Guest Ivan- 2 replies

Hi all, I recently built a server and is sitting in a server room physically located in a building across from where I sit. The server there is part of a network of servers which can see each other, talk to each other, connect to each other, etc. My problem is that I can't connect to the server from my computer. I can connect to all the other servers, ping, etc, just not this one. I have set a reserved entry on dhcp (which resides in the same network), so pinging the server resolves its correct IP, I just don't get any response. What is weird is the following: The server is a virtual machine, its host is a linux box. I can connect to the linux (host) OS,…
