Disk I/O Between XP and 2003
by Guest Jo Jo- 0 replies

Hello all, I've got a good one for all of you. Can someone tell me the difference between XP and 2003 in regards to Disk I/O? There is a difference, I know that for sure doing some tests. I'll setup my senerio. Mind you these tests were setup with one constant, the hardware. In both test scenario's the hardware never changed. Hardware setup: Intel based system with a 6 SAS drive RAID 0 hanging off the box. (Direct attached SCSI/SAS). These are Write Tests only. Results: Server 2003 gets about 250MB a sec writes. As expected. XP barley get 70MB a sec writes. Not as expected. Conclusion: I'm (hate to use this w…

High Memory Utilization for svchost.exe running WMI
by Guest John Neithercott- 3 replies

Has anyone else experienced a memory leak caused by the Windows Management Instrumentation service? I have a seperate copy of svchost.exe (svchostwmi.exe) running only the Windows Management Instrumentation service. Usually this service is lumped in with a lot of other services that you can't just restart (Server, Workstation, etc.). This svchostwmi.exe, if allowed, will use all of the memory in the system and make the system unresponsive. This only occurs on some of my Windows 2003 Enterprise 64-Bit servers (about 6 of them). I currently have a kill script that runs every 4 hours to kill the runaway service. This has been occuring for over a year. …

I'm recieving the following back error when trying to restore from a USB hard drive. "the backup file contains unrecognized data that cannot be used" I did a full backup to a network share, then copied the backup to a usb harddrive. For some reason i'm able to do a restore from the netowrk share, but it is very, very slow. I thought if i copied the backup file to a usb drive i could do it from there. Any suggestions, or tips would be grealy helpful? John

Hello Windows Server Experts. I have a prospective client that wants us to build a Windows Server as follows: 1) They need to access Simply Accounting from that server. So far the license is for 2 users 2) They want to remote access the server for informatin and printing off data 3) I prefer they use secure access. Cost is secondary to the purpose of the above mentioned. Currently this customer is accessing their Simply Accouting from a home using DSL and there are 2 computers so that gotomypc.com client can work. I wish to streamline this and make it secure and easy. I am looking atthe Windows 2003 Server line. Your suggestion…

I've installed WSUS 3.0 and I'm havying trouble getting it to reconize any of the computers in my OU for testing. Here's what've done: I cretaed a new OU, moved a computer into the OU. Created a Group Policy where I specified the Intranet server http://servername in both the set the intranet update service for detecting updates and set the intranet statistics server and configured automatic updates auto download and scheduled the install for sunday at 3:00 AM. Also to note I installed the administrative website on port 8530 according to IIS. Does this port need to be added in the group policy object where I specify the URL of the server? I forced…

Cannot browse new server
by Guest RitchieJHicks- 2 replies

Hi, I have installed SBS2003 G2 on my new server, which I have connected to my existing domain and given a static IP. I have now set up user accounts and an insternet connection which works fine, and installed the latest updates. I can see the new server listed when I browse via the domain from a client computer, but cannot browse any of the shared drives on the new server. Note that I can still browse my exisiting domain fine. When I try to expand the new server, the client PC goes slow and then shows no subfolders. I am obviously missing something straight forward - the question is - what? Thnks, RH.

I realize this isn't necessarily Microsoft related so if someone know of a better group please let me know. I figured though there still had to be users here who have input... Thanks I have an IBM DS300 iSCSI SAN that I'm trying to figure out the best set up and utilization for our File Server so I can max out our available space. We have 14 possible drives to use can perform either Raid 0,1,5,10,50. We have gone with 3 arrays (4 drives, 4 drives, 3 drives) of Raid 5 with 3 hot swaps, 1 per array. Anyone have any better suggestions? I'd like to go to using Raid 50 however, with IBM it seems it Parities out space when creating the Array and then again wh…

reboot
by Guest Kevin- 9 replies

I am running Windows 2003 server. I reboots for no reason a couple times a day. All I notice in the event logs is a bunch of warnings about printers being deleted (it's a Citrix server) but those are common. Then messages about booting up and services starting. In order for the server to reboot from a script created by a virus, wouldn't it have to be located somewhere specific for Windows to apply it? -- Thanks for your help. Kevin

authenticating to member server from non-domain client
by Guest Mike D- 0 replies
Hi, I recently demoted a Windows 2003 file server from a domain controller to a domain member server. (I have two other DCs.) Previously, when this file server was a domain controller, non-domain computers could authenticate to a shared folder using simply their domain user name and password. Now that it's been demoted, it will no longer recognize a user unless they add the domain name as a prefix. Why would this be, and is there any way to change its behavior back to the way it was? (other than reverting it back to a DC) Thanks, Mike

login script to copy file
by Guest Rhea- 13 replies

I have Windows 2003 SBS and most users with WinXP Pro. I have tried this line of code in the login script but it doesn't copy the file. I have full rights to both directories. What is wrong with the code or do I need to add anything? I wouldn't have thought it was so difficult to get a file copied from the server to a user's c drive. Help please, this can't be that hard. copy "servername\Shared\OrderSystem\NewBPApp.exe" "c:\Program Files\Beaver Plastics\Order System\" I have also tried various adaptations to this basic line of code, to no avail. Thanks.

History: I am trying to audit remote systems' local security policies. I have admin access (read only) and I do not have access to push/pull gpo's (secedit/gpedit won't work for what I need to do). Problem: I need to find out what the local security policies are set to on the remote systems via command line. Does anyone know how to do this?

Has anyone seen this problem? when copying files in Windows 2003 Standard x64, the Memory:Available MBytes counter rather quickly drops down to under 100 MB. I saw a hotfix and registry change - applied that but still having problems. I've updated all drivers - still having problems. Does anybody else have any ideas? Thanks!

by Guest T_A_C- 4 replies

I've been using NTbackup for a couple years now, as follows: File server (which has the VS80 tape drive, backs itself and also the backup files from the Exchange server, nightly. The Exchange server backs up the Ex storage group to a file and the systems state to a file, then the file server pulls those two files down to tape each night. This process has worked flawlessly until lately. Now I get the message in my NTbackup logs as follows: Backup started on 1/10/2008 at 12:03 AM. WARNING: Portions of "\Exchange.bkf" cannot be read. The backed up data is corrupt or incomplete. This file will not restore correctly. Backup completed on 1/10/2008 at 2:4…
