Mapping to an external usb hard drive attached to the server
by Guest rllngriver- 10 replies

Periodically, I have to install software and most of the sites have pcs in the server room instead of under the desks. How do I map to the external hard drive I have attached to the server so I can install the software on each pc? The way I map to the c drive of the server is by entering the ip address and then \c$ but I need to be able to map to the external drive letter as well. Please advise. Thank you. Workgroups to do not apply here.

Re: Opening a share

Re: Opening a share Thank you. I figured out the issue. I work with proprietary Market Data Equipment/Software that will not allow you to share such a device even though the server runs Windows 2003. So, my work around will have to be either copying the necessary files over to where they can accessed or using a cd instead and sharing the cd drive. I am not sure if this will help someone else, but they may have a similiar question at some point. Strange Remote Desktop Issue
by Guest Kryten- 5 replies

Hi, I'd really appreciate it if someone could explain why this is so.. An application that I run on a couple of W2K3SP2 boxes automatically starts after a reboot, you can tell the application is starting because an item is popped onto the taskbar while the associated services are being started. When this is done a service monitor window is shown on the desktop. Leastways thats what you see if you happen to be standing in front of it logged in as user123 ,<eg> Logged in as user123 via rdp and none of this is visible - to the point that you would never know, without further investigation, that the dratted application is running at all. Does anyo…

Group Policy does not apply
by Guest D.Forde- 2 replies

I have 1 domain and no OU's. I have used GPO and have created a policy that set's a min password length & enables complexity. I have setup a filter to assign it to a single user (for testing reasons). I perform GPUPDATE \FORCE and the event viewer shows it completed. The problem is when I log onto a pc with the user profile I defined in the GPO filter the passwords rules are not assigned, and they can change their pw to anything they want. I even tried rebooting the PC but that didn't help.

Hi all, I have a Windows server 2000 PDC named "myserver" with a share named "myshare". The path is \\myserver\myshare. A legacy app depends on this share. Now I should upgrade the PDC to Windows Server 2003 in a new hardware. The new PDC server will be named myserver2. The old one will be demoted and shutdown after transferring roles so I will lost the path \\myserver\myshare and the legacy app will fail. Once promoted to PDC the myserver2 can not be renamed back to myserver. What can I do? Is it possible to create some kind of alias such a way all the PCs in the network can access the new \\myserver2\myshare as \\myserver\myshare? Any hint is welco…

I need to delete a Excel from a folder on C: which is not shared. But got following message: the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. How can find out what "another process" is? Or just forced it to be deleted even being used by another process. The server is W2k3. Thanks.

RRAS Creating Multiple DNS Entries for Server Name
by Guest anthony@necrofiends.com- 3 replies
- 199 views
I'm running Server 2003 R2. I've installed a second NIC card so I can run RRAS. The second NIC is configured to not register it's connection in DNS. It does anyway. Also, the DHCP connections reserved for RRAS create DNS entries for themselves. So, I have multiple DNS entries for the same server name and it causes problems resolving to the correct IP address of the server. Any suggestions?

Can't run scheduled task
by Guest alicorn2- 8 replies

I'm having "fun" today :) Windows Server 2003 R2, Standard Edition, Service Pack 1 I have a scheduled task that I want to run a batch file hourly, as a service, with no one logged in. I've simplified and simplified, so now I'm down to bare bones using a different batch file that does next to nothing to try to troubleshoot it. The "test" batch file has this in it: @echo off echo %date% %time% Start of task, running as %UserName% >> c:\temp\test.log REM this is where I was calling my real batch file, but I've even taken that out now echo %date% %time% End of task >> c:\temp\test.log echo ------------------------- >> c:\temp\test.l…

Every now and then some user creates a file or folder that can't be deleted - they don't have rights to change the rights on the folders. The files or folders are not in use but you can't delete them - checked on the server to verify the file wasn't in use. Any suggestions?

by Guest Avil- 1 reply

I have set Disable Map Network Drive in the group policy of ADS domain and it works fine. But when the user logs in with the login script which contains net use commands to map network drive, the drive gets mapped. how can I disable this? My requirement is: 1. The users should not be able to map netowrk drives thru Net Use command 2. Network drives should not get mapped even though they are defined in the login script. Thank You
