Configuring Updates - stuck at 0%
by Guest Dean Cleaver- 5 replies

I've rebooted a server and *somehow* updates had been installed, and now on reboot it's stuck at 0% on update 1 of 3, and has been for about 30 minutes - any suggestions? Unfortunately it's my PDC and Exchange server, so it's important to me to get it running again. And of course, given I only switched to 2008 and Exchange 2007 yesterday from my old server, I don't have a backup yet either :( Dino

Windows Server 2008 non-functional network
by Guest Dean Cleaver- 3 replies

I have a new Windows 2008 X64 server that has decided it's network is now non-functional. Almost nothing works any more (no remote desktop, Exchange etc are all non functional) and the network connectivity icon indicates it's not connected - however I can ping it from a client machine. Network and Sharing center will not open. Exchange services will not start - it's pretty much hosed my box (and I only built it today, so ther are no backups). Any suggestions on what to do or try? Detect and repair fails miserably. I don't know of any other way of trying to fix the issue.

Mass copy of files: how to?
by Guest JR- 11 replies
Hello folks Due to severall reasons, I have to copy, at regualr intervals, severall thousand from server (or PC) A to server B. I've been using a batch file with a simple "xcopy *.*" command but, usually, either the scheduler fails or the command itself aborts for some reason or another. I usually end up having to manually copy the files 2-3 times per week... Does anyone have a better idea on how to do this? Some basic backup system, or utility? Any idea? Thanks for any help

vbscript problem removing and mapping network drive
by Guest Usenet- 10 replies

I'm hoping someone can help. I'm trying to move our logon scripts over from a mix of batch files and kixtart to vbscript. So far so good, except I have an issue with getting the script to map network drives reliably. In our environment let's say everyone has to have "r" drive mapped to \\server\share. Then depending which department a user is in they need a set of drives mapping for that department. So I have the following (not the whole script, modified to post the relevant bits): Dim objADSysInfo, WshShell, WshNetwork Set objADSysInfo = CreateObject("ADSystemInfo") Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Set WshNetwork = WScr…

Prescan.exe error upgrading to WSS V3
by Guest gocat2005- 0 replies

Hello I am running Prescan.exe before I upgrade to WSS V3. Prescan detects 2 sites which cannot be scanned because "they cannot be accessed using the SharePoint Products and Technologies object model". These 2 sites are old deleted sites eg: http://wssserver/localoffice1/person-a http://wssserver/localoffice2/person-b I ran stsadm databaserepair and also detached and re-attached the Content database. I then ran the SQL Query (KB 937291) which reveals the two deleted sites. How do I get rid of them? Can I delete them from the database? I have posted this to the Technet public forum with no response and it is now getting urgent so your advice wo…

Hello, I have a thinkpad T21 installing WS2003 trial edition. T21 has a serial port but it does not appear in device manager. Have tried to add it in manually, but system complains resources are used by ACPI. ACPI driver (power management driver) is installed, so are other hardware drivers. Any idea?

Hi, just got a new dell box with windows server 2003 enterprise. Noticed that when plug in a USB external HDD, windows has no response - it does not detect the new device. Only a reboot can get the USB HDD displayed. Is there anywhere in Windows settings that blocks the USB external HDD plug&Play? thanks in advance

Server 2008 Folder Redirection
by Guest Andy Smith- 11 replies

Hello, I have configured folder redirection on my server for Documents, Downloads, Videos, Music and Pictures within an OU which contains all the users. However, when logging on to client machines (all running Vista) none of these folders get redirected. When trying to manually change the location of these folders to a shared directory on the server (\\Server\Users\%Username%\Documents) I get an access denied error message, even though the users have full control to their directory. Now, the interesting part is that if I manually change the location using the IP address of the server (\\10.0.0.12\Users\%Username%\Documents) it works fine, which pret…

1U vs. 2U
by Guest MSUTech- 3 replies

This may be more of a DELL question, but, I thought that someone in this group may have some 'input': We are about to move forward on purchasing a few poweredge servers to add to our existing rack of servers. I am basically looking at the 2950 III (2U), 2970 (2U), and the 1950 III (1U). It would be ideal, if we could add 1U servers, which increases our rack capacity, so, I have some general questions. In comparing the 1U and 2U servers, what are the PRO's and CON's of going with a 1U over a 2U? Examples: Max Hard Drive Space (RAID 5)?, Heat?, Noise?, other issues? thanks...

How do I use Group Policy Management Console (GPMC)?
by Guest jferris@einstein.k12.ec- 2 replies

So I am a total newbie to Windows Server anything. We are using server 2003. Now on all of our desktops (totally Windows XP) we use Group Policy editor, to change some specific about the machine. ie, where windows updates are found, what the proxy is, etc. What sucks is we have to do this to each individual machine when we set it up. I need to change one option in all of the machines, but I am not really interested in walking to the 200+ machines and changing this variable individually. This is where I read about Group Policy Management Console. I am not really sure how to use it. How to import the setting I want into it, and then deploy them across t…

remote desktop

when an admin user tries to connect to windows 2003 server, most of time it produces an en error at application events like that printer driver cannot installed. Source termdevices event id 1111 "Driver HP Color LaserJet 2600n required for printer HP Color LaserJet 2600n is unknown. Contact the administrator to install the driver before you log in again. " This printer is installed on admin's computer. My question is : Can we disable not to add user's printer during Remote Desktop Session not to produce like this error? It is not important to use user's printer at server. Thanks?
