Vista srv: nonpaged pool
by Guest Paavo Leinonen- 7 replies

Hi, I have Vista Ultimate 64-bit computer as a server for home network. The clients are mixed Vista (Ultimate) 64-bit and XP (Professional) 32-bit computers. After installing Vista SP1 the Vista server reliability has gone bad for XP clients. When I use one of the Vista server disk shares from XP client heavily, the connection does down and I get "Not enough server storage is available to process this command" and/or "System error 58" in the client side. Vista server event viewer shows these error messages soon after the problems: - The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty (system log / source sr…

I work in a HS environment and I am trying to standardize the look of the Default Profile every student gets the first time they logon and use roaming locked profiles. Here is what I have done: 1. Logon to a system as a "Template" account and make all required changes to background, desktop, start menu, IE settings, ect. 2. Reboot and login as the administrator and copied the Profile to DC\NETLOGON\Default User. 3. When my users first logon, they do not get the profile I specified, but when I login the 2nd time they do. Weird. But what I have found is that I have specified a particular background which is on every machine in the Default User …

Do I need defragment on server running RAID 5?
by Guest Bobson- 7 replies
Hi everyone, I would like to ask if I need to run the defragment on a server running RAID 5 (hardware)? If so, have anyone tried the 3rd party like Diskkeeper? Any comments? Also, no matter what I used to defragment, would that mess up the Shadow Copy on the data or the config on the server? I just read thru some posts here so I ask this one. Thank you very much in advance for your help! Bobson

Lost all security permissions.
by Guest Eli- 7 replies

Need help with file security permissions. There are a lot of files that for some unknown reason lost all permissions info. If I try to open or copy them I get access denied error. Using cacls command doesn’t help – denied. If I go to security tab there are no permissions set. I have to take over ownership of the file, apply and then close it. Then open security tab again and add “system” account full access, then apply. After that I can see all the permissions that were supposed to be there originally. There are about 5000 files like that spread out around 100s of different folders with different hierarchy. Anyone know why it could of happen and how to…

Raid 5 with 4 drives
by Guest Adelxt- 7 replies

Hi, I'm presently running a raid 5 with 3 drives. If two of the three drives fail, then I would have to re-install the OS and restore from backup. If I use 4 drives for a Raid 5, would I not have to restore the OS until three of the 4 drives failed? Would it be 4 of 5 drives if I chose to have a Raid 5 using 5 drives. What I'm thinking is that the possibilities of more then two drives failing at once is slim but if that happens I could still keep my OS intact if I used a Raid 5 of 4 drives or more. Thanks Steve

chkdsk raid 5
by Guest Joshua Bright- 7 replies

I have been getting insufficent memory errors when I attempt to copy large pst files from our file and print server. This is also the case when I try to run scanpst (yes, I know there is no support for networked psts). My question is if it is ok to run chkdsk over a raid 5 volume? I have ran it in read only mode, but am concerned about possible corruption. Any words to the unwise on how to conduct preventative maintanance on a RAID 5 volume?

Files moving on their own
by Guest B~- 7 replies

I have a problem with a few users where they will try to move or delete files in their share folder and they keep coming back or will move back to the origional folder whenever the user reboots or logs back on to the server. We are running Windows 2003 R2 Small Business Server with syncronized files. The users "My Documents" are mapped to their user drive. I have tried turning off the syncronized files, that did not work. I tried moving the files from the server itself, and when the user logs in, the files are back in the origional position. This is only going on with 2 users at this time and then I have another user that whenever he is off line and w…

Roaming Profile Question
by Guest John W- 7 replies
I posted a question a few days ago to see if there was a way to put temporary internet files into a users roaming profile on SBS 2k3. I found out this is not possible. My next question is regarding a users cookies. We have a few users whose cookies do not show in their profile while everyone else's do. All systems are running XP so I'm not sure why there would be a difference. Is there something I can check to correct this? Thanks!

Is it possible to extend a partition ?
by Guest Peter- 7 replies
We are running Windows 2003 on SAN. We have allocated some more space to that server. We have attempted to use diskpart.exe to extend the primary partition but it is not successful. Someone says that it is due to the partitions are primary partition while someone says that the disk is "Basic Disk" and not "Dynamic Disk". I would like to know is there any tools we can extend the partition to use the additional unallocated space. Thanks

Script Needed to Change Ownership on User Home Directories
by Guest Scott- 7 replies
To prepare for implementing disk quotas on an R2 file server with 300 user home directories--most of which are currently owned by domain administrators, I am seeking a script which will change ownership on each of the user home directories (named as username) and all contents within each home directory back to each individual user . This is because of my understanding that disk quotas are based upon file ownership. I understand that subinacl is the tool to use, but I am not certain about the syntax. Ideally the script would iteratively read each directory, determine the username from the directory name and then apply the ownership without otherwise changin…

When the error pops up the printer will not print untill it's cleared. Not with only one type of document, very random in nature. Old drivers removed, old printer removed, system booted, new drivers installed and reinstalled. Any folder related to the printer or software has been completely opened so no security to see if that helps and nothing. Any thoughts would be great, thanks! CACLS Roaming Documents / Profiles
by Guest Jake- 7 replies

Hi all. I;m hoping you can help me. I just configured an entire Active Directory 2k3 environment and implemented a backup solution using NT backup. Everything is running great, except for the roaming documents. I followed the Microsoft Tech Doc about how to set the permissions properly. When i try to open a user's documents folder on the server, as Administrator, i get an ACCESS DENIED error. This scared me a little, as I run the backups as "Administrator". Researching further, I did a test restore of a user's documents... Low and behold, every one i tried was empty, which means that i am NOT backing them up. I've tried running cacls as follows: …

Strange IP Address Behavior
by Guest razor- 7 replies

Hello-- We run a W2003 environment and host our own websites on an IIS server within our subnet. Our web developers use different internal IP addresses in their web page host headers and the corresponding IP addresses are statically configured into the IIS server's TCP/IP properties of it's NIC card. It seems all of a sudden, the NIC card started with the bouncing yellow ball and states it is acquiring a network address. But, it has a static address already in it. I have flushed DNS, rebooted, etc, etc. Everything works fine, but when I look at the support tab on the NIC properties, it shows all zeros for the addresses. Again, everything works…

Cannot log onto DC console
by Guest Thorny- 7 replies
Hi Guys, I have a customer who is running a windows 2003 domain in mixed mode and has 2 DCs, one is a File server and the other a SQL server. Whenever I try to log onto the console of the File server DC (either physically connecting to the machine or using mstsc /console), I enter the user credentials into the CTRL+ALT+DELETE screen, then it show the 'applying personal settings' then 'saving your settings' before taking you back to the CTRL+ALT+DELETE screen. I can successfully log onto the same machine using RDP (not using the console). There is nothing obvious in the event logs and all services are running. Does anyone have any ideas?

/3GB analysis
by Guest Justin Rich- 7 replies

so, I understand how the /3gb switch works, but is there a way to tell what the kernel end of things is currently eating up? is it assumed that it always takes as much as it has? We have an instance where we might need to do this, but I was wondering how I would go about analyzing the system to get a feel on whether this will be a good thing or not. from what I have seen its a try it and find out, unfortunately this is a production system and people don't like to just try things, they would like a little certainty. Thanks Justin

by Guest Steve Roy- 7 replies

Hi !, sorry for my english, i'm french speaking. Since many years, some users can start/stop service remotly on our Win2K0 SP4 server. The domain admin created GPO for this (giving acces for stop/start/pause some service). Since few weeks, we installed another server (Windows 2K3 SP1), with same setting, same ACL, same software. The GPO was deployed but this users cannot now start/stop this services. The only difference between this 2 installation is: 1 is Windows 2000SP4 and the other Win2K3 SP1. There is some limitation, or security setting with Win2K3 ? Can someone help me please ! Thanks ! Steve
