Removing Windows 2003 Server on a dual boot ?
by Guest Trying2Learn- 5 replies

I've Windows XP Pro & Windows Server 2003 installed on dual boot system. I only have one hard disk with partitions. I know that formatting the partition where Server is installed, is the only way to get rid of it. My question is, do I still have registry values for Win Server 2003 left behind?

"workgroup" server Win2003 sbs?
by Guest bill allemann- 8 replies

I think earlier versions had an option to config as workgroup or domain server. Is there any way to make win2003 act as workgroup server? It didn't seem like there was any choice during setup for other than domain server. It created a new domain on the LAN, and the existing PC's were in a named workgroup, which shows up separately when browsing the local network. I'm dealing with a small LAN with a few PC's, one of which is XP Home, and it doesn't appear that I can make it a client computer on the new server.

Backup solution system for network
by Guest Marco- 9 replies

Hi. I would like to develop a system to make backups to computers or only for outlokk folder of computers. I have a software on my FP server that backup daily my files. But I have a problem. My users have their own PST files in their PCs into a specific folder. I would like to build a system that would allow me to backup their PST in to a server. No to add those files to my daily backup because there's not enough space in the tapes for that. For me just a symple copy past would be great. The problem with copy past is that users forgot to close outlook. I tried with nt backup, but I think that NTbackup cannot copy PST files if their being use…

Cannot access web page by name due to too many group memberships
by Guest Arjan Schel- 7 replies

Hello, I'm not sure where to post this message, because it has to do with more then one specific area. We have users who belong to more than 300 groups. These users are having trouble to access certain corporate intranet websites by dns name. When we try the same pages through ip-address it works. When we remove some groupmemberships from the user, it also works. We've seen this with more users here (even with myself). This only happens when the webpage checks my account, for example sites that need to check my identity, to show my personal page.. This happens on IIS systems and Apache windows servers. We first thought of the MaxTokenSize registry value,…

Domain Controller Certificates
by Guest Adrian Marsh (NNTP)- 10 replies

Hi All, Posting in both SBS and general server as this applies to both. I've a transition-packed SBS 2003 server, and I need to understand the different types of certificates involved in Domain usage. For example, yesterday I setup a linux server that makes LDAPS requests to our SBS server for authentication, all worked fine. Today its failing, and when I examined the LDAPS traffic I can see it believes the certificate has expired. Checking the certificate identified, I find it actually has, on the 7 Aug 08. The certificate in question is based on the Domain Controller (DomainController) template in the SBS CA. Theres a three of those certificat…

Raid 5 with 4 drives
by Guest Adelxt- 7 replies

Hi, I'm presently running a raid 5 with 3 drives. If two of the three drives fail, then I would have to re-install the OS and restore from backup. If I use 4 drives for a Raid 5, would I not have to restore the OS until three of the 4 drives failed? Would it be 4 of 5 drives if I chose to have a Raid 5 using 5 drives. What I'm thinking is that the possibilities of more then two drives failing at once is slim but if that happens I could still keep my OS intact if I used a Raid 5 of 4 drives or more. Thanks Steve

Scheduled Tasks
by Guest bretty83@gmail.com- 8 replies

Sorry to bother, but I was wondering...what is the difference between scheduled tasks in Server 2k3 compared to them in Win xp pro SP2.... Reason I ask is, I've got backup scripts running to a NAS...on the server they are working perfectly, but using the same method on xp, they just don't want to run...security and paths are all correct, no issue talking to anything... Can anyone give me any thoughts/insight into the matter? Thanks...

MS Critical Patches - Reboot - Did not reboot.
by Guest Neil- 6 replies
Hi, I applied couple of critical patches from April till now as the previous admins did not install any of these patches. But, one of my domain controller (which holds the Global Catalog) was rebooted after the patch install. Reboot command got issued, but it did not time out when I tried pinging with a -t for almost 30 minutes. So, I thought something is wrong. I tried RDP in again and could not. I have noticed this RDP problem cropping up from sometime in October of last year, when I applied patches and after that I could not RDP onto the server. I will have to reboot the server twice to get in through RDP again. Well this is not my main concern, b…

Server 2003 R2 SP1 wacked after updates. Should I restore systemstate?
by Guest barretech@hotmail.com- 4 replies
- 545 views
HI. I have a server 2003 R2 standalone DC with SP1 that we installed updates onto last night (about 25 updates). Now it seems to have some kind of problem with serving files. I have already gone into the Windows folder and one by one in proper order used "spuninst.exe" to remove each update. Didn't reboot between the uninstalls. Maybe I should have. Question:Should I restore the system state from the time before the updates were installed? I have a USB hard drive (actually two) with system state backups. I sure hope USB is supported during system state restores. Do I need to use Active Directory restore mode for this? Here is more info that led me to b…

Converting Dynamic Disk back to a basic disk
by Guest Saral6978- 5 replies
This is my situation - I have an old HP storageworks attached via SCSI cable to an HP Proliant DL380, Windows 2003 SP2. When the storageworks got migrated to this server, I accidentally converted the array to a Dynamic disk. I have since removed all data from this volume, and the only thing left is the System Volume Info and Recycler folders (hidden folders). I understand the first step in converting back to basic is to delete the volume itself (using Disk Mgmt). I attempt this step and I get the following warning: "The volume storage (E:) Simple volume is currently in use. To force the deletion of this volume, click Yes. Warning, forcing a deleti…

Windows Explorer always crashes
by Guest Jack Spratt- 8 replies

I have 40 users who RDP into Windows Server2003. They are all controlled by a group policy so they have limited access. They do have access to use Windows Explore but shortly after opening it they get an error message that it has failed and needs to close. Any idea if there is a patch out there for this or is there something in the Group Policy I need to work with? When I restart the server I end up getting a large number of prompts asking me if I want to submit each of these incidents to Microsoft. Thanks.

How to install 3rd party SSL domain ceritificate on local servers
by Guest Library Sysadmin- 7 replies

Windows 2003 R2 servers. Domain name is in a form such as mydomain.local We have Certificate Authority installed on a server and have been issuing self-signed certificates for a few services, such as OWA. Our web site is outsourced to a web hosting company. Registered domain is in a form such as mycompany.org. They have purchased a 3rd party domain certificate for use with the site. I want to install the domain certificate for use with a couple of services, such as Exchange 2007 services and VPNs. The web hosting company sent me two files, domain.crt and domain.key. Being a domain certificate, I guess I thought it would just be a certificate I co…

by Guest Steve Roy- 7 replies

Hi !, sorry for my english, i'm french speaking. Since many years, some users can start/stop service remotly on our Win2K0 SP4 server. The domain admin created GPO for this (giving acces for stop/start/pause some service). Since few weeks, we installed another server (Windows 2K3 SP1), with same setting, same ACL, same software. The GPO was deployed but this users cannot now start/stop this services. The only difference between this 2 installation is: 1 is Windows 2000SP4 and the other Win2K3 SP1. There is some limitation, or security setting with Win2K3 ? Can someone help me please ! Thanks ! Steve

As I understand the PDC emulater normally is configured as the Authoritative Time Server, however, should I configure more time servers for redundancy? If I do, will they serve as time servers, or until I promot one of them as the PDC role? Is there specific doc on this?
