dcpromo /force problem
by Guest Cindy B- 2 replies

Hi - We had a server that we needed to demote. Due to some replication problems, it would not do the dcpromo --- without adding the force to the end of the command. That seemed to be OK - except it changed it from the domain to a workgroup server. I would like it to be a "member" server within the domain. When trying to re-add it to the Domain, I'm getting errors saying the it already exists... and it does... So I went to the current DC and was going to remove the server name so I could readd it. Now I'm getting a message about removing a DC - which I guess also makes sense, because it doesn't know it was demoted. Here's my question... which is m…

by Guest Gilead- 0 replies

Has anyone successfully installed the Access Based Enumeration tool on a server running Windows Storage Server 2003 R2? I have heard it is compatible but when I try to run the .MSI installer it bombs out saying "You can only install on computers running 32-bit versions of Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1."

windows 2008 server
by Guest colleen- 1 reply

I have a windows 2008 server and it intermittently loses connection. I have 2 NIC cards in it. I have disabled one nic card. I have noticed that if I changed netbt to restart on all errors, it seems to help. Most of the time when this happens, the only way to get connectivity back to it is to restart the server. I have had to restart the server during the day and there are at least 25 users attached to it at the time. Any suggestions would be helpful.

DNS

1) Short for Domain Name System (or Service or Server), an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name http://www.example.com might translate to 198.105.232.4. The DNS system is, in fact, its own network. If one DNS server doesn't know how to translate a particular domain name, it asks another one, and so on, until the correct IP address is returned. (2) Short for digital nervo…

Hi, I have a W23k server running an app that uses MSDE. I have renamed the administrator user. Since I have done that I keep getting this error in the event log. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM'. Searching the net - I have found answers to add the NT Authority to the sysadmins. How would I do that in MSDE? Thanks for any and all help.

We have Windows 2003 SBS SP1 installed, and I am trying to install the R2 components on top of it. The WSUS install is failing during the final configuration. The log errors are below. I searched the registry for that COM component, and did not find it. I searched the Internet for information on this COM class, and didn't find it. Any suggestions? Thanks! W2K3 ASR Backup Floppy Disk
by Guest Wake-Up-Jeff- 3 replies

W2K3 ASR backup insists on creating a floppy disk which must be located in the A: drive. How archaic is that? Very few of my servers have floppy disks drives. I gather that this floppy disk stores information on the hard disk partitions. My question is . . . can this data be redirected to another location / disk drive? I haven't found a way to do it.

RAID

râd) Short for Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks, a category of disk drives that employ two or more drives in combination for fault tolerance and performance. RAID disk drives are used frequently on servers but aren't generally necessary for personal computers. RAID allows you to store the same data redundantly (in multiple paces) in a balanced ay to improve overall performance. There are number of different RAID levels: Level 0 -- Striped Disk Array without Fault Tolerance: Provides data striping (spreading out blocks of each file across multiple disk drives) but no redundancy. This improves performance but does not deliver fault tolerance…

Features

Distributed File System (DFS): DFS allows multiple network shares to be aggregated as a virtual file system. Support for SAN and iSCSI: Computers can connect to a Storage Server over the LAN, and there is no need for a separate fibre channel network. Thus a Storage Area Network can be created over the LAN itself. iSCSI uses the SCSI protocol to transfer data as a block of bytes, rather than as a file. This increases performance of the Storage network in some scenarios, such as using a database server. Virtual Disc Service: It allows NAS devices, RAID devices and SAN shares to be exposed and managed as if they were normal hard drives. JBOD systems: JBOD (Just a b…

DHCP
by Guest Michael Yardley- 0 replies

Short for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, a protocol for assigning dynamic IP addresses to devices on a network. With dynamic addressing, a device can have a different IP address every time it connects to the network. In some systems, the device's IP address can even change while it is still connected. DHCP also supports a mix of static and dynamic IP addresses. Dynamic addressing simplifies network administration because the software keeps track of IP addresses rather than requiring an administrator to manage the task. This means that a new computer can be added to a network without the hassle of manually assigning it a unique IP address. Many ISPs use dyn…

How to recover volume
by Guest Bad Beagle- 1 reply

I have a Windows 2003 standard server connected to a SAN that has one volume. The OS is on a mirrored drive of the server and the data is on the volume of a SAN. If for some reason that server fails and I build a replacement server - how to I reattach to the volume on the SAN that is still valid (all data is in tact)?
