FTP and RRAS (VPN) services best practices / locations? PPTP secur
by Guest markm75- 1 reply

I'm trying to restructure our domain.. and I believe I have had the ftp service in a "bad" location prior.. Prior to now.. it was installed on a domain (member) server.. I used a dummy account to provide access to the directory though.. Now i've virtualized alot of the infrastructure and created an "edge" server, which is not joined to the domain. It is my belief that the FTP service should reside here. On this edge server (virtual).. i have two nics, but one isnt in use and the other has a local ip address to our network. So for now i'm not using a public ip address, but i'm guessing i probably should assign a public ip to the one nic? …

FRS Service Doesn't Start
by Guest Kent Tylman- 10 replies

Hello, I have a Windows 2003 DC on which the FRS won't start. I just get a generic message saying that it didn't respond in a timely manner. I just installed SP 2 hoping that might help but it didn't. Can you point me to some troubleshooting steps? I found articles on troubleshooting FRS but they aren't much help if the service just won't start. Thanks. -- Kent

30 seconds to change the attributes of a file
by Guest Wowbagger- 0 replies

Server 2003: In a directory completely devoid of all files except for the hidden thumbs.db (ranging in size from 8Mb to 40Mb), while working on the local machine the command attrib -s -h *.db Takes 20-30 seconds to execute. Why would this be taking so long? No errors in the event log directly related to this, and the various disk health scans I have run always report no errors.

Hi I have tried to use the AutoExNT-mechanism to create a service for running a java application (Protégé) via a bat-file on a Windows 2003 standard x64 edition. I follow the instructions and everything seems fine. The service is created successfully. When I try to start the service I get an error message saying: ---- System error 2 has occurred. The system cannot find the file specified. ---- This happens regardsless of the content of the AutoExNT.bat-file (even when it's empty).

Very slow to open folders with 20,000 files
by Guest Wowbagger- 6 replies
In the office there are a series of folders on the server, each folder containing 15,000 - 25,000 (or more) .jpg files. When any of the clients double click on a folder to open there is a long pause - up to 20 seconds - before the folder will open. Thumbnails are not cached, and there is no significant load on the server. Is there anything I can do to speed things up?

Hi Folks. I'm trying to setup my certificate on our server running Server Standard 2003 R2. I setup the certificate for example.example.com which points to our server. I get the prompt to continue from IE 7 and then I install the certificate in the trusted root certificate authorities just like any other but this one never sticks. I get use OWA just fine once I accept to continue. The next time I go back to the site I have to "continue" again like it doesn't know the cert is installed and if I go to install it again it acts like the first time and has the "Install Certificate" button still. Every other site I install the certificate from goes right into the …

Paging File and Diskpart

I have Windows 2003 Sever, Standard Edition. I’m running out of space on my hard drive and the system is slowing down. I have an array controller with a RAID 1 system already in place with two physical drives and one logical drive. I want to expand and extend the array to four physical drives and maintain one logical drive. To complete this task, after I install the hard drives and configure the array, which should not be a problem, I understand that I have to use Diskpart.exe from the command prompt to configure Disk Management in the Computer Management console. I foresee one looming problem which is that the logical drive is not partitioned, i.e., …

Transfering roaming profiles to new server

A new SBS 2003 has the same domain name and the same OS, but users have new ID's. Their old roaming profiles don't work. How can the profiles be reassigned? (It's not enough to justify the complexity of a swing migration, since I just exmerged the mailboxes to PSTs and back.) -- Reply in group, but if emailing add another zero, and remove the last word.

Nested Folder Permissions
by Guest MJD- 1 reply

I've enabled access based enumeration on our Server 2003 so users can only see folders they have access to. In this folder, it has nested folders that I have setup for managers & employees. What I want is when I give a user permission to add/remove files at a folder level, it will then automatically give them read or list contents permission to the parent folder(s). Example: Share ...Management ......Sales Department ......Accounting Department ...Users ......jdoe If I give user jdoe full permissions to Sales Department, I want him to be able to see the folder Share, inside Share he will see Management, and inside Management folde…
